the first naval expedition on record was that of the argonauts in 1263 b c but the first efficient fleets for war purposes were those of phoenicia and greece the method of war at that time con sisted in driving the vessels into each other seeking to destroy the ship rather than to attack the crew the defeat of the 500 ves sels of anthony and cleopatra by 250 vessels under the command of octavius in 31 b c was the only sea fight of historic interest for centuries the history of england's naval development is practically the his tory of all naval growth in 556 a d the roman war galley was the type of england's fighting ships while from 450 to 1066 the principal vessels of the saxon raiders were large uncovered row boats alfred the great built heavier boats to oppose the saxons and this is practically the begin ning of the english navy from 1066-1200 ships rarely exceeded 50 tons burden and in 1485 had only reached as high as 80 tons al though masts and sails had in creased in number the santa maria the pinta and the nina are types of the warships of the fifteenth century the art of mediasval ship build ing culminated under henry viii in the great harry the first two decker ever built having a dis placement of 1000 tons in 1637 the first three-decker was built she carried 130 guns of all sizes and had a displacement of 1637 tons the royal willian of 1918 tons was the largest ship in com mission in 1690 and nelson's flag ship the victory shows but few changes seventy-five years later our naval history began with the war for independence the first decked vessel built in north america was launched in the hud son in 1614 our only great naval battle of the war of 1776 was that between the serapis and the bon homie richard the war of 1812 found us with nine sloops and eight frigates confronting england with 102 ships of the line and 429 frigates and sloops but it was our the concert on monday evening the com bined performance of the mustard and cheese mandolin and glee clubs takes place it naturally means a great deal of expense to give this performance and it is sincerely hoped that the students will aid the management by giving it their hearty support this year the performance bids fair to be one of the most enjoyable that has been given for a long time the mustard and cheese has a very amusing farce by sidney eosenfeld and although not as long as their usual play it will be just as well rendered and cannot help being a success the mandolin club has been re hearsing faithfully and has some very catchy music their appear ance in the minstrel show was a decided success and with the op portunity for practice enjoyed since then it is to be expected that their part of the program will make a hit the glee club under the direc tion of professor wolle has been making great strides and have a large number of pieces that they render in fine style it cannot help being enjoyable to hear them sing the college and patriotic songs which stir the heart of every col lege man the performance as a whole is bound to be a great success pro vided the participants get the support they deserve from the student body let all the students feel that it is their duty to attend and in that way show their appre ciation of the efforts of those taking part _ a resolution was recently passed by the council of columbia uni versity to appoint a committee of five professors to consider the advisability of establishing a sum mer course at the university be ginning with 1899 baseball lehigh i princeton 6 lehigh met defeat at the hands of princeton,on the latter's grounds wednesday by the above score the game was full of brilliant plays made on both sides and was won by coupling hits with lehigh's errors both pitchers were effec tive but six hits being made off white and four off ilarrison hillebrand who pitched the first three innings allowed no hits and struck out seven men lehigh's playing was vastly better than that of the orange game the work of the outfield being particularly good after the first two innings white settled down and pitched an excellent game allowing but four hits in seven innings the features of lehigh's play were e grace's stop at short and bailey's work in right field for princeton easton and butler played the best games princeton scored two runs in the first inning on two hits two bases on balls and an error another was added in the second on an error by white a base on balls and a passed ball in the sixth inning the score was increased to five runs by a hit two errors and a passed ball the sixth run was added in the ninth on kafer's single to right which bailey missed kafer taking third and scoring on thompson's out to right field lehigh went out in one two three order in the first three in nings on seven strikeouts and two assists by the pitcher in the fourth ilarrison replaced hille brand and pomeroy hit to center for a single taking second on thompson's error but was caught napping by a throw from the catcher in the next three innings lehigh had but four men at bat each inning securing two hits lehigh's only score was made in the ninth by carman who reached first on kafer's passed ball class of 14,150 tons burden and costing over 4 500,000 dollars each the united states congress has authorized three first class battle ships of which the lowa is one she is heavily armored and carries as haavy guns as any ship afloat she also has sufficient speed to manoeuvre against any enemy the coast defense ships of which the massachusetts is a type are also righting ships but carry less coal and have less speed than the lowa the indiana and ore gon are of this class for harbor defense we have the double turreted monitors typified by the miantonomah presenting a small target to the enemy and carrying 10 or 12-inch guns they find their field in shallow waters where a large ship can not follow them . the armored cruiser is in many respects the most useful class of ships in the new york we have the finest vessel of her class up to date the newark was the first war ship which was built exclusively by this country gun boats torpedo boats and rams were variously discussed ; the lecturer closing with a eulogy to the leader whom providence has given us to guide this country through the present war ihe freshman team is to play the pennsylvania freshmen on the athletic field saturday afternoon if this game is well supported other games at home and abroad will be arranged it is hoped that the whole college will turn out and help the freshmen along admission is 25 cents mr h w
