calendar thursday may 19 — baseball lehigh vs wesleyan at south bethlehem friday may 20 99 epitome will be out choir rehearsal chapel 4.30 p m saturday may 21 — baseball le high vs oritani field club at hackensack n j lacrosse lehigh vs stev ens at south bethlehem in the second half the hopkins men were somewhat tired out from their hard playing in the first half and the beautiful teatn work of the lehigh players which repeatedly called forth applause from the grandstand began to manifest itself with telling effect both the attack and the defence played a much stronger game fitzgerald made the fourth goal for hopkins mc innes the fifth and clunet the sixth after the fourth had been made abbott shot lehigh's second goal followed soon after by a long swift shot from captain symington lehigh did not score again till after mclnnes had shot hopkins fifth goal when by quick passing thurston got_the ball and shot le high's fourth goal which was follow ed soon after by one from clunet edgar then received the ball and made the fifth and last goal for lehigh the game was a clean one through out there being only one foul called by the referee and that was made unintentionally by a hopkins man the feature of the game was p starkey's goal playing which quoting a balti more paper was phenomenal the lineup of the two teams was as follows : lehigh johns hopkins thurston inside home gerald clunet thurston 2 abbott edgar and symington time of game two thirty-five minute halves referee arnold k reese lehigh umpires brook hopkins and berwick lanier in the evening the teams at tended a concert given by the hopkin's glee banjo and mandolin clubs in the gymnasium baseball lehigh 18 lafayette 4 lehigh defeated lafayette on the lehigh field saturday by the above overwhelming score the game played by lehigh was almost faultless the men throughout playing with snap and life and batting in a manner a close ob server of the team this season would have supposed them incap able of at no time after the second inning was the result in doubt but there was a certain amount of relief felt as the home team continued to increase their lead lafayette's small score is due in a great measure to the excellent pitching of white which was slightly wild only in a part of the second inning the fielding of the team was of the finest character as the error col umn will show — but one error being made and that in the ninth inning lafayette at first played a nice fielding game but towards the last as the score against them grew larger and larger they appeared to lose interest and played listlessly the feature of the game was the batting of e grace who knocked a home run with the bases full in the second inning and in the eighth brought in three more runs by a long drive to left field bray also made a home run in the ninth inning with one man on base which gave lafayette two of her four scores the detailed account of the game is as follows : first inning — hile went out on a ground hit to short eeese hit to short and beat the ball to first walbridge was thrown out by white and ilubley knocked a hot grounder to w grace who fielded him out at first for lehigh pomeroy went out on a hit to pitcher e grace got his base on an error by walbridge and scored on w grace's single white hit to walbridge who threw w grace out a second carman having flied out to worthington second inning — worthington was given a base on balls and stole second and third bray struck out clark got a base on balls and stole second worthington scored on an infield grounder to ilollingsworth who threw lauer out at first and clark scored on a passed ball by carman neyras flied out to james james for le high drove a pretty single to centre but was thrown out at second bailey got a base on balls eeed a single and ilollingsworth a base on balls pomeroy scored bailey on a pretty single to right field and e grace drove a home run over the fence between right and centre field bringing in four runs carman flied out j grace received his base on an error but was left on base as white hit an easy one to first base third inning — hile eeese and walbridge went out on infield hits in one two three order clark here replaced nevins in the box the latter going to centre field for lehigh james was thrown out at first bailey struck out and eeed was thrown out at first on a ground hit to walbridge fourth inning — hubley went out at first on an easy grounder to white worthington flied to w grace and bray struck out hol lingsworth flied out to bray and pomeroy to eeese e grace got a hit through the pitcher but was left on base by worthington's taking a liner off carman's bat fifth inning — clark singled to centre ; lauer struck out and nevins singled to centre but was thrown out from pomeroy to hol lingsworth at second clark was left on base on hile's out to j grace at first j grace,in lehigh's half of the inning went out on a hit to short stop white singled to centre and james received a base on balls neither of them scored however as bailey and eeed flied out to left and right field respectively sixth inning — eeese fouled out to pomeroy and walbridge was thrown out at first by hollings worth hubley hit through white but was left on base as worthing ton retired the side on an easy grounder to j grace lehigh made two runs in this inning on an error by lauer on which hollins worth reached first hits by grace and carman and a long fly to centre by white pomeroy flied out to centre and james struck out seventh inning — a fly of bray's to centre of which james made a pretty catch and strike outs by clark and lauer completed la fayette's half of this inning for lehigh bailey was hit by a pitched ball and eeed reached first on an er ror but was thrown out at second on hollingsworth's hit to short pomeroy singled bringing in bailey e grace was presented with a base on balls and carman brought in all three on a long three-bagger to left field j grace was hit by a evening for baltimore to contend with johns hopkins university for the inter collegiate championship of the united states upon arriving at baltimore the team went to the carrollton hotel and had a good night's rest before the game the game was called at union park at 8.30 and was a desperate struggle from the very beginning every man played his best and according to a baltimore authority such team play tipping shooting and goal tending had never been seen in baltimore lehigh being by no means behind in the race in the first half lehigh was out played by the fast running and dodging of the hopkins players but both teams played a beautiful team game after five minutes of play the first goal was scored by eobinson of hopkins lehigh re peating hopkins performance a few minutes later by good team play and tipping thurston received the ball and shot a grounder which tied the score the ball then went to abercrombie to fitzgerald to mclnnes,who shot hopkins second goal captain eobinson scored a third goal a few minutes later and the half ended with the score 3-1 in favor of johns hopkins the church school association offers three prizes of 500 each to seniors and three of 300 each to juniors of the southern universities who pass the best examinations in english latin and greek and mathematics and physics the questions in mathematics will be prepared by professor henry b fine of
