the last of the athletic activities until feb ruary 7th when the basket ball team will go to swarth more and the swimming team will meet catholic uni versity in taylor pool hear com n h heck radio adherents brown and white will endeavor to make up for defeat at navy's hands playing very ragged wrestling season opened by frosh commander heck entertains fans with an interesting talk first home meet of the year sees yearlings grappling with balto city college tryouts completed saturday the lehigh matmen will journey to princeton where they will endeavor to repeat the victory of last season over the tigers the prospects for do ing so are extremely bright des pite the defeat adminstered by the navy last saturday in the first match of the season coach billy sheridans charges have as yet to get under way and with out a doubt this week-end will find a team of the calibre of last years the bengal matmen began their season last saturday when they wrestled the strong uni versity of pennsylvania team losing by a score of 19 to 10 two falls were all that the or ange and black could obtain against the red and blue last season the brown and white wrestlers obtained almost a per fect score on perm this all points to a hard match this week-end with lehigh the fav orite the lehigh team will be prac tically the same as that of last week with the exception of the 135 pound class in which wash burn displaced poliska reed will hold down the 115 pound with best at 125 williamson at 145 beck at 158 captain burke at 175 and levitz in the heavy weight division coach sheri dan has carefully groomed his men for the coming meet and is confident that they will come through hord was able to increase the muhlenberg score clymer add ed a point on a foul after which smith added two more points the visitors made four more points from the floor c schaub who was put in for gallagher scored two court shots from passes both times from hess before the period ended hess scored the first basket in the second half c schaub and gallagher who was back at the vipot position between these shots siegenfos scored three baskets bringing the score up to 27-47 lawson scored for muhlenberg lehigh in the class of 03 delivered on last tuesday evening an interesting illustrated lecture about the coming eclipse commander heck has charge of the united states coast and geodetic survey and will carry on observations at cornell uni versity during the period of the eclipse his address last tues day evening explained the na ture of the work done by the coast and geodetic survey and also showed something of the way in which this work is car ried on the experiments which commander heck will make will be to determine the influence of the sun upon atmospheric elec tricity and magnetic variations commander heck told of some of the pecautions which he will have to observe in taking the tests if he is to obtain ac curacy on the day of the eclipse the day before and the day after tests will be contin uously made for six hours cov ering on each day the time im mediately preceeding and fol lowing the hours of the eclipse during these periods the in struments used will have to have a constant temperature and if it is snowing the dis tance from the instrument to the ground will have to be con stantly tabulated electric cur rent influences these delicate instruments consequently they will be removed about three miles from the nearest electric wire the united states govern ment will have official experi con on page 4 col 3 lafayette track prospects seem very bright dean mccqnn gives freshmen advice new courses in practical sports an intra-mural wrestling meet to be staged sometime in february and an intra-mural boxing contest with probably a match with lafayette are a few of the new innovations which will be intoduced during the coming term by the department of physical education though not even the tentative dates for these meets has been decided as yet that they are to be realties is assured various other meets and contests will no doubt fol low these a final examination in gym is being given in all the classes this week and is the first time in the history of the college that it has been done heretofore the getting of gymnasium cred its was only a matter of atten dance but now it only counts half toward the final work the rest of the grade is determined by the consideration of the va rious elements which go to make the work valuable such as the effort and work shown the re sults of the prescribed athletic tests improvement shown dur ing the year and attitude taken this may cause some men to lose their credit even though they might have passed under the old standard this idea is to be extended to all the classes even to those who are taking some recognized sport in which they are not on the varsity squad in these courses a knowledge of the ru diments and fundamentals of the sport general bearing and attitude and the cooperative spirit shown will make up at least half of the grade this will tend to make the courses offered by the department oi physical education more pop ular and at the same time more beneficial to those who take them these changes will also raise the standard of the work and make it as high if not higher than any similar set of courses given by physical education de partments in colleges in the country three week basketball schedule lies before anderson's men modes of study change in curricula the radio society of lehigh university held a meeting last monday evening the meeting was but sparsely attended but the talk of the evening was very interesting the lecturer was commander n h heck of the united states coast and geodic survey his talk was an inter esting resume of the work of his department in taking data for mapping the coast-line of the united states he told how the contour of the pacific coast is being mapped by means of wireless commander heck's work has led him into an extensive inves tigation into the subject of acoustics and also its applica tion to wireless during the world war he was engaged in the anti-submarine work and since then has made a magnetic survey of the coast of southern california and has kept his work on a high plane from the start one of the interesting events lecounted was the method by which coast survey is made a bomb exploded on a point on the shore and radio instruments on the ship pick up the sound of the explosion by taking into consideration the velocity of the sound the exact location of the point is determined along the line of acoustics also wor kis being done in mea suring the depth of the sea in this connection the speaker an interesting ancedote of the ser vice some sailors out at sea and desiring to ascertain if the pres sure at a certain depth was suf ficient to burst a bottle of cham uagre lowered a bottle of it into the ocean after the bottle was lowered to the depth required it was again raised to the deck l/pon examination it was found that ihe pressure at the great depth had forced the salt sea waier into the bottle the radio society is at pres ent engaged in experiments with wireless telephony the broad-casting room in the phy sics building houses a 165 meter wave-length set and communi cation has been established with stations in several states this set is to be change for a one of an 85-meter length by means of which the work can be enlarged several important matters were discussed at the faculty meeting held last monday after noon in the new memorial build ing and presided over by dr richards the faculty approved a change in the mining engineer ing curriculum to go into effect the second term the change is in the fact that the course in mining surveying heretofore taken in the summer following the junior year will hereafter be taken during the second term the practice work at the mine will be done during the week following the final exam inations for the second term this will relieve many of the students of summer work and will give an opportunity to those con on page 2 col 3 the freshmen wrestling team will have its initial meet of this season when they will oppose the baltimore city college squad on saturday afternoon the meet will be held on the lower gym floor and is sche duled to start at 2 30 p m the squad of frosh matmen have been diligently working for the last two months and are at the present fairly well vers ed in the holds and technicali ties of the game during the past week the tryouts for the baltimore city meet have been completed with the following re sults in the 115 lb class either phillips or mcgovern will rep resent lehigh depending on a bout to take place on friday afternoon bambas will wres tle in the 125 pound class willis in the 135 pound class burke in the 145 pound class allen in the 158 pound class weiner in the 175 pound class and either miller or evans in the unlimited class depending on a bout to take place sometime of detroit mich and walter lew is of vineland n j who ran on the team which lowered the lafayette college indoor rec ord in the trenton games last year are a nucleus around which coach brown may build paul farnham of waterbury conn and alphonse west of lakewood n j better known for their running on the cross country team and in the dis tance events have clocked fast time in tryouts so far this sea son as have h b van auken of coatesville pa and robert kurtz of elkins park pa who ran in the dash events on last season's track team con on page 4 col 6 con on page 4 col 6 this morning dean mcconn addressed the freshmen on the subject of final exams this talk was very similar to the one which he delivered to the fresh man class last year in packer hall and stressed the impor tance of earnest for the lafayette college bas ketball squad during the exam ination period which will begin wednesday of this week the maroon quintet will start the new semester off with a game against muhlenberg college here on february 4 con on page 4 col 4 the hardest part of their schedule lies ahead of coach anderson's men muhlenberg and lehigh twice conquerors of lafayette last season are both to be met in two-game series next semester a return game will be played with rutgers rutgers closed the first semes ter's card here saturday night a game with the university of pennsylvania here on the night before a crowd of 2,000 the lehigh cortmen made it siw&n straight by defeating the muh lenberg five wednesday in tay lor gymnasium by a 31-25 score at the half time the brown and white lead of 24-9 though the game was more exciting and faster than might be judged from the score with a change of baskets lehigh took a slump and were unable to penetrate the strong defense offered by the allentown collegians both teams had trouble locating the south goal though all of le high's ten points scored from that goal in the second half were shot from the field smith was the leading scorer of the game dropping in a to tal of five from various angles captain hess circled three thru the steel hoop gallagher and m schaub both shot in two field goals while e schaub and weinstein had one apiece to their credit during the first half lehigh played a fast aggressive game though their passing was at times careless this combined with the alertness of the muh lenberg men gave the ball to the cardinal and grey many times but their weak offensive made them unable to take advantage of it this deficiency was over come in the second half and the muhlenberg team had to work harder to obtain posses sion of the ball for half of the second period the playing was even first one team scoring and then the other after a time out period muhlenberg started a rally scoring five field goals in succession before the lehigh team broke it up by freezing the ball ziegenfos and hard played the best game for the losers though rice who went into cen ter when ziegenfos was called out of the game on personal fouls proved to be a dangerous man borrell and layson scor ed two each the former bor rell was very much in evidence and his grand-stand playing efforts and herculian drew a laugh from the audience how ever though a good defensive player his shooting was spectac ular and inaccurate one of his long shots from beyond the cen ter line did score much to the surprise of the spectators lehigh scored first when hess dropped in the ball from the fif teen foot mark after about three minutes of fast playing and passing muhlenberg imme diately took the lead the only time in the entire game at which the visitors
