an election to fill the positions of manager and assistant manager of the baseball and lacrosse teams will be held in christmas hall on tuesday sept 29 from 11,30 a m to 1 p m following is a list of the nomi nees : for manager baseball — g c white t b sheaffer and ii s johnson 97 for assistant — t b wood jr d w eoper and d f b shepp 98 for manager lacrosse — c c dunnells h t irwin and w b brady 97 for assistant — c b warren j b lindsey and j j eckfeldt 98 in order to vote it is necessary to first become a member of the athletic association by the payment of this term's dues amounting to 8 to mr g b lmderman treas urer of the association or to his representative mr williamson the corps of instructors in the electrical engineering department has been increased to lour by the addition of mr eobt b william son mr williamson graduated at the head of the class at cornell in 93 he was engaged for the following two years in general con struction work and for the last fourteen months has been employed in the designing room of the gen eral electric company's shops at petersburg canada his principal work here will be with the seniors a commission of new england college professors met in boston last july to consider plans for hav ing a uniform system of college examinations eesolutions were adopted favoring the plan cornell will no longer make latin and greek requisite for the degree of a b columbia appropriates 43,000 yearly towards increasing the li brary harvard spends 17,000 and yale 7,000 foot ball candidates for this year's team have been practicing twice daily since sept 14 and coach morris expects to put a good team on the field the line is somewhat light but there is some heavy material in the incoming class the prac tice consisted of catching punts falling on the ball and the ordin ary plays as well as tackling the " dummy in the gymnasium the first line-up took place yesterday the following are candidates for the team : full back holderness 99 fu git 1900 brady 97 white 1900 and pflueger 98 quarter back — holderness 99 gass 98 white 1900 and thurs ton 99 half back — boyt 97 howard 97 van duyne 97 pflueger 98 sanchez 98 and thurston 99 linemen — scovil 98 rogers 1900 beoerra 98 hannum 99 homer 98 treichler 97 slade 97 chiles 97 gass 98 ross 1900 scott special mccarthy 1900 barager 1900 fugit 1900 and belden p g manager saltzman has arranged the following schedule of games : oct 10 princeton at princeton " 17 pennsylvania at philadelphia " 24 brown at providence " 28 rutgers at south bethlehem " 31 university of michigan at detroit nov 7 lafayette at easton " 14 naval academy at annapolis " 21 lafayette at sotth bethlehem games will probably be arranged for oct 14 and 21 on the home grounds the game arranged for the 3d of october with the university of west yirginia in south bethle hem has been cancelled by west virginia but in all probability there will be a game arranged for ithat date on the home grounds the opening exercises oflehigli university for the session of 1896 97 were held wednesday afternoon in the packer memorial church long before the appointed hour for the exercises in the chapel the lower classmen began to gather upon the campus and with their 3^ells made the air resound when 8.30 o'clock arrived the cam pus in the neighborhood of the chapel was well crowded with the students and their friends at the stroke of the bell the freshmen with hats off marched two by two into the chapel past the long rows of sophomores assembled on either side of the entrance rev dr worcester opened the service with the hymn " mother dear jerusalem the usual cere mony was gone through with after which president drown de livered his address of welcome to ■the students at its close the rest of the students were dismissed and the freshmen were given a few words of advice hy the preside/it from the chapel the freshmen repaired to the gymnasium where with the assistance of the juniors temporary officers were elected the sophomores during this time were gathering at the gates of the cam pus the usual rush on packer avenue resulted on the arrival of the freshmen president drown spoke as fol lows : on behalf of my colleagues and for my self i welcome you most heartily on your return to college for another year's study and i trust you look forward to your work with genuine interest and enthusiasm it has been a great pleasure to me during the past year to note that the students of le high realize fully their o iportunities and their privileges and that their devotion to their studies is all that their teachers can desire the few who are negligent and in different find themselves sadly out of place among this mass of busy workers of the items of college news which will have interest for you i will mention first with great pleasure that professor thorn burg has returned to us fully restored to health you will i am sure be glad to see him again and give him a hearty welcome two additional instructors have been added to the teaching force barry h jones of the class of 95 will be instructor in the de partment of mechanical engineering and mr williamson a graduate of cornell in the class
