left college until christmas the line would have been complete the backs while not heavy are all good tacklers runners and line hitters so far captain gunsolus is very well pleased with the work of the team the turn-out of the scrub is very discouraging indeed on two occasions last week there were not enough men out to give the varsity practice to make a good team it is necessary to have a large scrub and make the practice hard and snappy in a college of four hundred men there must be more than twenty-two men who play football and it is the earnest wish of captain gunsolus that a large number of men turn out in the future of last year's team there are five players in college captain gunsolus played tackle on last year's team and also on the famous team of 93 before com ing to lehigh he played on the state university of iowa team he is a hard player both on the offensive and defensive and is a hard tackier he weighs 170 pounds senior 97 who is a candidate for left tackle played that coming to le high he played the rugby game he is a very plucky player good punter and hard tackier he tips the scales at 160 pounds gass 98 has played on the team ; two years last year he developed into a star end but at present can not play on account of pressure of college work he is a sure tackier and carried his 160 pounds down the field very quickly becerra 98 is a candidate for guard he weighs 187 pounds and is very strong he has played a good game at tackle on the scrub for the past two years johnson 97 is another candidate for guard but while a strong player is a little light weighing only 170 pounds he has played on the scrub for the past three years the end positions are being filled by treichler 97 and brady 97 both were substitute ends last year and are playing in good form brady is also a good line hitter and continued on fourth page the university of chicago offers 1,086 courses changes in the foot ball rules owing to unfortunate circum stances two sets of rules were adopted in 1895 which governed the games between the different colleges this naturally caused dissatisfaction and even ill feeling among the colleges it therefore became necessary to form a new code of rules to govern all games in the future united action was therefore brought about by the university athletic club in majch of this year with the result that a meeting of the representatives of committee mr camp was unanimously elected chairman and secretary the rules which were adopted by a unanimous vote were submitted to the university athletic club which through its executive committee approved t'n'e action of the rules committee , the most concise and forcible summing up of the changes brought about by the new rules is contained in spalding's official football guide for 1896 which says : " the principal changes outside of mere alterations in the wording were made in the rules governing fair catch and scrimmage the former has after a season of trial been brought back to its old ruling of heeling a catch but the penalty of two years ago viz fifteen yards which was attached at the time when the law was made providing for holding up the hand has been retained the situation then is the same as three years ago save that the catcher is protected by a very severe penalty against interference or being thrown it is highly im probable that there will be any in fringement of this rule in the face of a loss of fifteen yards " in a scrimmage the feeling against too great concentration of plays has shown itself and momen tum plays are practically eliminated and mass plays held in check in two ways liuling that no player shall take more than ' a single step before the ball is put in play save one man who may be in motion toward his own goal will bar out all forms of momentum
