university's swimming team will play host to the le high varsity in the latter's first meet of the year coach gulick has had his men practicing to repeat their victory of last year over the past week-end new york university decisively de feated union and showed added strength in all departments from last year a very close meet is anticipated by both the coach and the team this meet will be the only one before the mid-years but imme diately after the examinations the swimming team will be kept busy with the meets on the well arranged schedule although it is very early in the season to predict anything concerning the results still those connected with lehigh swimming feel sure that the current season will be a most successful one captain astarita leads a fine team of veterans in harmon raleigh travis and freeman all of whom are heavy scorer due to an injury al ral eigh will only swim the back stroke and in the relay it was announced by coach gulick prior to the meet raleigh was one of last year's stars being crowned inter-collegiate cham pion in the back-stroke he per forms equally as well in the 50 yard event but in order to avoid trouble later in the season al will be backstroke hobbs dives since this is the first meet in which blair has participated it is rather hard to gauge the worth of the opposing team the frosh however have been hard at work and with the wealth of material which pres ented itself this year the year lings should have an excellent season which means that blair may expect to have some diffi culty in running off with the honors , the interfraternity council held its regular meeting in drown hall monday evening january 12th with president callow presiding after the regular line of business was run through the following rules re garding the interfraternity sports were passed these rules go into effect immediately nay man who has received a letter in basketball or who has played in a varsity game this year is in eligible to participate in the in terfraternity games the bowl ing team shall consist in four men and only four the social committee report ed that they were planning on running an interfraternity smoker some time in the early part of february the idea of this affair is to create a better feeling between the various groups and to act as a sort of get-to-gether for all the mem bers of fraternities the plans for this stag smoker will be an nounced at a later date when they are fully worked out president callow announced that after his talk with dean mcconn regarding the exten sion of time for saturday night dances thta the dean has con sented to the following plan all dancing is to tstop at exactly twelve on saturday nights but refreshments may be served af ter twelve providing that all participants of the dance will be out of the house giving the dance at one o'clock sharp last wednesday night the le hign frosh basketeers journey ed to ailentown ana lost a hard iought contest to the strong al ientown prep team by the close score of 28-21 me ailentown doys put up a very strong de tense which was almost unpene trable at times while the jb rush detense proved to be rather weak ailentown prep started off with a rush scoring several bas kets in the first few minutes of play the frosh then settled down and came back at them by scoring several double-deciters ahentown then gained a good allentow nthen gained a good margin over the frosh which they maintained during the rest of the first half the score stand ing 19-9 at the end of the per iod the second half was some what the same story the frosh having the better of the scoring this time although they were not able to overcome the big lead piled up by the ailentown boys in the first half the final score stood at 28-21 sensational long shots proved to be the big feature of the game ailentown was very adept at this branch of the sport and lehigh gained most of their points in this manner also the playing of adams a big 190 lb guard who is coming to lehigh next year featured adams will probably seek a regular berth on the frosh team next year and should have no difficulty in making it pat maun will hopelessly outclassed and the 62-11 score conclusively prove this fact the maroon and grey pulled the notredame after twelve minutes of playing in the first half when they substituted an entire fresh team however the results did not prove as sat isfactory as when knute rockne pulls his famous stunt for the new outfit were as helpless against the lehigh passers as their predecessors the first period was disting uished by the outstanding work of schaub and weinstein schaub always on the alert and caging one goal after another while weihstein was hither and yon over the entire floor smash ing up play after play and time and again taking the sphere away from the meyerstown dribblers the half ended with lehigh on the big end of a 31-7 count the second period was open ed with a rush by the lehigh gang the team work was beau tiful and the passing was fast and accurate within the first minute of play gallagher caged one on a spectacular toss from a difficult angle scores were made frequently and evenly di vided among the brown and white players although hess seemed to be on one of his off days and scored but one basket throughout the game but it was team-work and not individ ual glory that loomed big last wednesday smith however was high man with 8 field goals and 2 foul con on page 4 col 3 toward the middle of the night-cap period lehigh made wholesale substitutions in is neces sary to make reservations as soon as possible this may be done by getting in touch with johnnie unkles at the phi del ta theta house lehigh cam pus negotiations are still in progress with the management at asbury park and consequent ly nothing definite can be said at this time at 6:30 the evening of the 20th the combined group will broadcast from station wor of newark and arrangements are con on page 4 col 4 the radio society has been very fortunate in securing as the speaker for their meeting next monday january 19 com mander n r heck of the class of 1903 who is at present con nected with the united states coast and geodedic survey the meeting is to be held in the physics lecture room and is scheduled to begin promptly at 8 o'clock mr heck has divided his talk so that it will fall under two main heads radio acoustic method of position finding in hydrographic surveys and velocity of sound in sea wa ter a cordial invitation is extend ed to any students outside of the radio society to attend the meet ing and hear this most inter esting speaker the treasurer wishes it announced that there will be plenty of seats on hand for everyone the y m c a will hold the first of their sunday afternoon meetings this sunday at 4 o'clock in drown hall at this time they have been extremely fortunate in obtaining pat malm secretary to sherwood eddy and popular speaker of the silver bay conference last june to come to speak to le high men mr malm graduated from the university of pennsyl vania last year where he was active in v work while no subject has been announced at
