on thursday evening last pro fessor chandler delivered the first of a series of lectures on the chem istry of every day life in the large lecture room in the chemical lab oratory which was filled some time before the lecture commenced professor chandler took as his subject the chemistry of illurni nants and in substance spoke as follows : artificial illumination is pro duced by the incandescence of solid particles in every case except that of the arc light which is produced by the passage of an electric current between two pieces of carbon this is easily demonstrated as lor in stance by the combustion of magne sium wire by bringing one end of the wire to an intense heat oxi dization of the wire takes place which produces heat enough to continue the combustion the in tensely heated particles of magne sium give the brilliant light seen to illustrate this in another way professor chandler used an oxy hydrogen blowpipe to heat a piece of steel a third experiment using the blowpipe on a piece of calcium was performed in each of these three lights the incandescence of solid matter has been the light giver a similar experiment to these can be made with an ordinary gas jet the flame from a gas jet con sists of three zones the inner one being the gas itself the next the incandescent particles of gas and third zone of combustion of the oxygen of the air with these incan descent particles to show this gas was drawn from the inner zone with a glass tube and ignited at the end this was followed by an exhibition of electrical incandes cence in the incandescent lamp the temperature of incandescence is 525 c i c at this temperature light begins to be radiated in ancient days little was known of lighting however the egyp tians are supposed to have had glass lamps later the greeks and komans had cup-shaped lamps with wicks hanging over the sides this same principle has likewise been employed by the esquimaux in 1784 the argand lamp having a draught through the centre of the wick was invented following this came the astral lamp with the oil in an annular ring the german student lamp cassell's lamp in 1803 with the oil raised to the wick by clock-work ; the moderator lamp in 1839 and par ker's hot oil lamp in 1856 to 1859 coal oil was distilled from coal and burned in a peculiar lamp built for this particular oil pine oil or rectified turpentine and burn ing fluid both explosive mixtures were also used to some extent in 1859 colonel drake of bethlehem discovered petroleum in pennsyl continued on fourth page football cadets 24 lehigh 10 the annual game between the naval cadets and lehigh resulted in the above score what might have been a fine exhibition of the sport was marred by many and in excusable fumbles on both sides at critical times the fumbling of the cadets was especially notice able in the first half three times in the first ten minutes of play they had rushed the ball within lehigh's 10-yard line only to lose it on fumbles brady being com pelled to fall on it once for a touch back in the second half a change of balls seemed to diminish the fumbling of the backs lehigh's fumbles though not so frequent were quite as costly and more in excusable the team work of the cadets both defensive and offensive bar ring the fumbling in the first half was far better and stronger than that of lehigh they frequently lined up and started the play with out waiting for the fullback to get in position they never failed to advance the ball the requisite num ber of yards while time and time again their line broke through and stopped lehigh's play the right end of their line seemed to be the only weak point van duyne skirting it for several long runs the playing of richardson and fischer was especially good the former making many hard tackles and advancing the ball whenever entrusted to him he has the make-up of a fine player and with out a doubt could play on any one of the larger teams the regular fullback henderson was pre vented from playing owing to an abscess on the arm woods who took his place was unaccustomed to the position but nevertheless was able to get his kicks oft in fine style on the whole their work was of that fast and snappy kind which makes football interesting the work of lehigh's team on the contrary was far below the standard at times they seemed demoralized due possibly to the number of crippled men van duyne and brady were the only ones that played in any kind of form lehigh might well imitate the cadets style of play and regain that fast and snappy play which characterized lehigh's teams of former years the details of the game were as follows : lehigh kicked off to navy's 10-yard line the ball being lost to lehigh who immediately lost it on fumbles to navy it was worked down the field and fumbled on lehigh's 5 yard line brady fall ing on it for a touchback after rushing it down several times powell finally carried it over no goal score 4-0 johnson replaced mccarthy at center on the kick-off woods fumbled and gass carried it over fugitt kicked goal score 4-6 lehigh scrub 16 ;
