winter meet training should begin at once for the winter meet which will be held some time this term it is the intention to offer prizes and perhaps a banner will be awarded to the class scoring the most points if inter-class rivalry is estab lished there is no reason why we should not have a most successful meet the committee on sports will be guided very largely by the interest taken now in deciding whether or not a series of smokers will be held next term sophomore cotillon club the first dance of the sophomore cotillon club will be given at the eagle hotel tuesday dec 15 every effort is being made by the committee to make this a most successful dance and it is hoped that it will receive proper support lehigh university south bethlehem pa monday november 30 1896 vol iv no 18 the brown and white calendar thursday dec 3 third of series of free public lectures on the " chemistry of every day life subject " chemistry of the metals by dr kichards friday dec 4 — meeting of chess club christmas hall 7.30 p.m saturday dec 5 — meeting of 9 epitome board 2 p m sunday nov 29 — meeting of christian association christ mas hall at 6.15 p m subject missionary meeting tuesday dec 8 — meeting of mathematical club physical laboratory 7.15 p m wednesday dec 9 meeting of agora christmas hall 7 p m thursday dec 10 meeting of civil section of engineering society physical laboratory 7 p m tuesday dec 15 — sophomore co tillon club dance at eagle hotel notices it is earnestly requested that all fraternity and class cuts for the 98 epitome be attended to at once as feb 1 is the latest that these will be received all clubs which intend to appear in the epitome should decide whether or not their cut is to be the same and if it is to be changed it should be done at once h m daggett jr manager the philadelphia lehigh alumni club passed a resolution at the no vember meeting in regard to the failure on the part of the under graduates to pay their athletic dues the substance of the reso lution was that the secretary find 5 out first the total number of stu dents ; second the number of fra ternity and non-fraternity men and r third the amount contributed to athletics by fraternity and non fraternity men during the past four years in regard to the above it is re quested that all old receipt books for athletic dues be turned in to the chairman of the athletic co.m mittee at once as a complete re port must be handed in before the december meeting points went to lehigh on the safety from this time to the end of the half the fighting was more even and lehigh only made her next touch-down by pretty end runs and good line bucks the double pass trick from holderness to van duyne was used with great success and the tackle plays also worked especially well finally when fugitt made a pretty run around right end for the third touch-down the few lehigh rooters present were wild with delight this goal was also missed and neither side scoring during the remainder of the half the score was fixed at lehigh 16 ; maryland a c 0 at the beginning of the second half the baltimoreans seemed de termined to score harrison made ten yards around right end white gained ten yards on two line-bucks three more yards gained by connor and four by parr together with five yards given for off-side play brought the ball into lehigh territory on the next play it was fumbled and mason fell on it on lehigh's 45 yard line once more the lehigh men by pretty rushes carried the ball up the field senior was brought back at half-back several times and went through the baltimore line as if it were paper finally with the ball on the maryland a c.'s 15-yard line van duyne tore through the line and placed the ball behind the goal post fugitt kicked the goal making the score lehigh 22 ; maryland a c 0 after the next kick-off lehigh continued her good work senior at half-back doing especially well the final touch-down was scored about five minutes before time was called and the goal being failed the score was fixed at 26 to 0 during the last few minutes maryland a c took a final brace and went through the lehigh line time after time but their good work came too late and the game was called with the ball on lehigh's 25-yard line final score : le high 26 ; ggs princeton linesmen chamberlain lehigh hebb m a c touchdowns white van duyne 2 fug pitt and senior goals from touchdowns — fugitt 2 safety parmly m a c time two halves 30 and 25 minutes convention of educa tors the tenth annual convention of the association of colleges and preparatory schools of the middle states was held friday and satur day of last week at the university of pennsylvania the occasion called together some of the most prominent educators of the east papers touching upon the prepa ration for college were the ones read and discussed professor stevens of cornell in answering the question " shall historical studies be a necessary part of college entrance require ments " said that from a profes sor's standpoint it is entirely un desirable it is better for a fresh man's mind to be turned to other studies than to be filled up with erroneously taught historical ideas for it is exceedingly difficult to eradicate such ideas when formed but for the preparatory schools it is desirable for greek and roman history are essential to the study of the classics and english and american to those who never enter college history now must be understood in connection with the problems taught a paper by professor ira eem sen ot johns hopkins on " high school science studies as part of the preparation for college elicited some discussion that these studies are desirable there is no question but that they are un desirable as now taught is only too evident the practice is to be uni versally condemned the conference on college en trance requirements brought some valuable suggestions the average age of students at graduation is too high the fault is in the steady rise of entrance standards the tendency is to omit the college course and to enter professional and technical schools from the secondary president eliot of harvard,made an eloquent appeal for the broaden ing of the requirements he be lieves in " admitting to the exami nations every topic well taught in the high school which helps the pupil toward helpful knowledge chemistry history literature the natural sciences he advocated the optional method of admission with a breadth that left little of the old fashioned tripos of latin greek and mathematics most of those taking part in the conference seemed to think that a student should graduate from col lege at twenty and for entrance a choice of subjects should be re quired all sessions of the convention were eminently practicable and of vital importance to all teachers and instructors lehigh was represented by president drown shepp ex-'94 played with the lansford team on thursday football lehigh 26 maryland a c o lehigh again showed her supre macy in football thanksgiving day by defeating the strong mary land athletic club team at balti more by the score 26 to 0 our team played perhaps the snappiest game of the season and in spite of the good defensive work and plucky fight of the baltimore club suc ceeded in running up the above score the teams were of very much the same weight but the superior training and careful prac tice of the lehigh team made itself evident in every play the day was an ideal one and fully three thousand people repre senting baltimore's best society were at the maryland oval watch ing every play with breathless interest lehigh won the toss and took the western goal having the sun at their backs which was quite an advantage parmly kicked off and holderness and gass carried the ball to within ten yards of the centre of the field van duyne and white both made long gains for lehigh a double pass from holderness to van duyne com pletely fooled the baltimoreans and the ball was carried down to their 10-yard line in the next play white having beautiful in terference carried the ball over the line after only two minutes of play the goal was an exceedingly hard one to kick but fugitt succeeded in making it and placed the score at 6 to 0 on the next kick-off parmly sent the ball to white who carried it out to the 40-yard line where he was tackled in his fall his knee was hurt badly which necessi tated his retiring from the game fugitt went back to half homer going in at tackle a series of line bucks and end runs by holderness fugitt and van duyne carried the ball into maryland a 0 grounds where it was given over on account of le high's holding maryland being unable to gain the necessary five yards was forced to kick and the ball was in lehigh's possession on maryland a o.s 45-yard line good gains by lehigh's backs carried the ball down the field and in seven minutes another touch down was scored fugitt missed an easy goal and the score was le high 10 ; maryland a c 0 at the next kick-off after a few attempts to gain brady was called upon for a kick he made a beautiful punt of 45 yards and the ball was downed on baltimore's 20-yard line maryland being un able to gain the ball went over and sharp rushes by lehigh placed it on maryland a c.'s 2-yard line where it was lost on downs on the next play the ball was passed to parmly but he was downed behind the goal and two
