january issue to appear soon lehigh shows excellent team work in downing scarlet rivals by 49-38 score spent a few days here last week in which he became familiar with conditions first year men lose by score of 45-23 in meet held friday night will serve as special lectur er on strageic mineral in officers reserve dinner by home club substitutes play well astarita and harmon star a squad of forty-five men are working out daily in the wrest ling room in preparation for the tryouts for the varsity wrest ling team which are being held the first part of this week the men qualifying in the various classes will represent lehigh in the meet with the united states naval academy which is to be held at annapolis on saturday january 17 this meet will mark the opening of the wrest ling season for lehigh and the success of the brown and white matmen may be more or less de termined by the showing that they make against navy the first meet for the fresh men will take place on january the twenty-fourth when they tackle baltimore city college the freshman tryouts are sche duled for the week beginning on the nineteenth of january the commons which has been accommodating students since 1917 served its last meal on the day college closed for the christmas vacation the rea son for discontinuing the ser vices rendered by the commons is summed up in one statement lack of patronage and subse quent heavy financial loss to the university whether the commons will be re-opened is a question for con jecture it is now considered doubtful the matter however is under study by certain ad ministrative officers to what use the building will be put if it is not re-opened as a dining hall is likewise unknown at the present time arcadia discusses many questions albright cagemen here tomorrow night a brief but important meet ing of the burr board was held friday afternoon several suggestions were given regard ing the name of the february issue but none was adopted at the time two new men were elected to the board james s lynch who has had numerous art contributions in the past three issues was elected to the art staff and robert p mac fate was elected to the editor ial staff the men who are in the sophomore competition for positions on the business staff will be elected at the next meet ing of the board which will probably be held two weeks from last friday the january issue will appear sometime next week which will be very appropriate for driving away the blues which are so prevalent before the final examinations it will be called the arabian nights number brown and white quintet ex pected to maintain string of victories five important topics dis cussed and definite action taken on all but one substitutes to see action triangle society to hold tea dance collection of dues urged first large social function of the year for the fresh man class to be held in delt house notification of his appoint ment as a staff specialist in the officers reresve corps of the regular army with the rank of major has just disclosed a sig nal honor conferred upon prof gar o roush associate profes sor of metallurgy at lehigh un iversity by the war depart ment prof roush was asked by the assistant secretary of war to accept a commission in order that he might serve as special lecturer on the strate gic minerals in the army indus trial college this training school is conducted in washing ton to instruct officers of the regular army in the fundamen tal factors governing the supply of raw materials and natural resources which are vital to the national defense prof roush was chosen from the ranks of american metal lurgists because of the broad knowledge he possesses of con ditions in the mineral industries of the country for eleven years he has edited the volume min eral industry the standard american reference book of all those engaged in the mining and producing of metals the inti mate knowledge of the mineral industries thus gained and his wide acquaintance among exec utives and technical men in this field fit him emminently for this new post he expects to receive orders from the war department to re port for the first series of lec tures within a few weeks his work as special lecturer will take prof roush to wash ington twice each year for about a week's time his lectures will cover those minerals necessary to national defense of which the country produces a supply in adequate for war needs such as tungsten magnesium chrom ium antimony and vanadium percy wendell the man who will guide lehigh's destinies on the gridiron for the next three years paid his first visit to the brown and white institution the middle of last week con trary to current opinion his purpose in visiting bethlehem was not to sign the contract be cause he had already done so about three weeks previous during his brief stay wen dell was familiarized with the conditions to be encountered here and was impressed with the spirit of cooperation pro nounced in all circles associat ed with lehigh university on his first day arriving in beth lehem on wednesday morning he was cordially greeted by bethlehem when a guest at the weekly luncheon of the bethle hem rotary club con on page 4 col 4 he spent the rest of wednes day afternoon in conference with officials at lehigh and in becoming acquainted with the football squad he spent most of thursday in a similar man ner one of the outstanding parts of the future coach's plans is the attempt to eliminate or at least cut down the great loss es which lehigh suffers each year because of men flunking out while in conference with the faculty committee on ath letics he urged this body to de velop some feasible plan along this line in the meantime a temporary plan is to be put into effect immediately which plan was devised at a meeting of wendell merrill langfitt pet riken and the assistant manag er for this past season this plan in brief is as follows : a committee composed of bosey merrill and langfitt will meet weekly and go over the stand ings of the men on this year's freshmen learn results of exams frosh basketeers lose to york c i psychology departmnt makes known results of tests held previously greater experience and strong finish enable york to win out final score was 35-18 lecture on how to study the sixth engagement of the lehigh university basketball team will take place tomorrow when they play the team repre senting albright the game will be played in bethlehem at the taylor gymnasium court the contest should not prove a diffi cult one for the brown and white cage-men to capture and unless the indications are mis taken it should result in anoth er victory out of the first five games four have been taken from the opponents which is no mean record to achieve on the oth er hand there have been times in the games when there was evidence of much needed im provement on the whole the progress has been reasonably satisfactory and if the work is kept to this standard for the re mainder of the season there would be slight grounds for complaint while attempting to smooth out the rough spots in the team's play coach baldwin has at the same time been lay ing considerable emphasis on the work of the members of the squad who are not counted in the first five it is expected that the policy of giving more op portunities to the substitutes than hitherto will be given a trial in the game tomorrow al bright was the loser in the an nual game which took place last year by the score of 43 to 19 from this fact and the addi tional information that the re turn game with rutgers will take place on next friday it is evident that if possible the first team will not be pressed con on page 4 col 5 thursday evening the arca dia held its regular meeting in drown hall and several mat ters of interest were discussed first the idea was proposed of having one of the sophomore clubs meet visiting athletic teams and speakers at the rail way stations and show them around the campus and direct them to the places where they are to go it was decided to ask the scimitar club to take the task for a time then there was a discussion about requiring the treasurer of each student activity which han dles student money to report the condition of the finances of his organization to a committee of the arcadia the arcadia de cided that it would impose some penalty on those who did not meet this requirement but it could not agree on what the penalty should be the arcadia then took up the matter of house parties for this year there was a committee appointed to see the faculty committee on student activi ties in order to see what the sta tus of house parties this year was and also to find out what the responsibility of the arca dia was on the matter president a l bayles was not present but he sent in a list of a few things for the arcadia to talk over one of his sug gestions was limiting the amount of college activities that any one student could take on he said that there were some students that had so many col lege activities to take care of that it did not give them time to properly take care of their studies and that he thought t advisable to limit the amount of student activities that any one man should have to take care of he suggested that a certain number of points be assigned to each office and that there should be a maximum number of of the freshman psychological tests were reveal ed friday last at the orienta tion lectures given by the mem bers of the department of psy chology and education the examination was prepared by the american council of educa tion it has important scienti fic and administrative purposes but it is also intended to serve the student and his educational advisors the score making clear to the eye on a graph the relation of the student's perfor mance and the performance of others and also between the stu dents success in one test and his failure in another the object of the test was not as a meas ure of one's future success how ever nor as a measure of one's native capacity for it has not con on page 3 col 3 the second meet of the swim ming season was held at taylor pool last friday evening with the varsity competing against the freshmen although the yearlings were full of confi dence before this meet due to their success in the inter-class meet they were soon left behind in the scoring and the varsity easily won the meet by the score of 45-23 astarita and harmon starred for the varsity while hobbs timen and wynn held up the point honors for the frosh the meet scheduled for 7 30 did 56 1-2 feet 3rd yocum 40 feet 5—2005 — 200 yard breast-stroke by leader 2nd freeman 3rd heller time 3 minutes 12 1-2 seconds 6—2206 — 220 yard swim won by harmon 2nd pennington 3rd culbertson time 2 minutes 50 3-5 seconds 7—1507 — 150 yard back-stroke won by wynn 2nd richards 3rd saxton time 2 minutes 7 2-5 seconds b—loo8 — 100 yard swim won by travis 2nd riker 3rd glenn time 1 minute 1 3-5 seconds captain astarita showed very good form in this meet and attempted several new dives simply for practice which were awarded high scores by the judges he intends using these dives in next week's meet with n y u hobbs would have had a higher score but for a bad slip in his next to last dive making him lose some of his form and effectiveness on his last dive timen easily con quered honors in the plunge as did harmon in the 220 although the latter showed poorer time than usual the judges for this meet were mr mahoney coach gulick and manager davis timers mahoney and nutting on saturday night the le high frosh lost a hard fought cage contest to the york colle giate institute the game was played at york the score 35 18 gives little idea of the con test which was fast and keen ly fought to the finish but in the end the york cagemen dis played a speed and experience which won the game for them it is this burst of speed and veteran experience in basket ball which has enabled york to maintain an unbroken record of victories for 1 two years bill heimer the coach is a former lehigh quarterback robeson and stubblebine at center starred for the york quintet with a flashy style of floorwork schwarzstein bill meyer and marshall played an outstanding game for the frosh con on page 4 col 4 the lehigh basketball quintet journeyed to new brunwick on saturday and defeated the rut gers five by the decisive score of 49 to 38 lehigh exhibited the best brand of basketball shown thus far this season last year the brown and white team tasted one of its two defeats at new brunswick and as rutgers has practically the same team that wore the scarlet last year the indications are that the le high team has improved greatly since that time it is very sel dom that rutgers is defeated on her home court and this would tend to further strengthen the truth of the above statement one thing that showed that the brown and white has de veloped considerable teamwork was that the scoring was quite evenly divided hess and smith each scored five field goals and some of those of the former were of the sensational variety being scored from the center of the floor the superiority of the lehigh team was apparent from the opening whistle when the brown and white men as sumed the lead and were never in danger of being overtaken the first half ended with le high on the long end of a 26 to 14 score rutgers staged a ral ly in the second half but they only succeeded in scoring one more point than lehigh in this half and the game ended with lehigh having an eleven point lead two of the brown and white regulars gallagher and e schaub were forced out of the contest early in the econd half but c schaub and gualco filled their places capably ' and thus enabled the team from bethle hem to maintain the excellent teamwork lehigh had a decid ed advantage in goals from the field scoring twenty to twelve for the home team rutgers had the advantage from the fif teen footmark however but c schaub showed his dependabili ty in this method of scoring when he had a perfect average of six counters out of six at tempts the line-up was as follows : lehigh 49 rutgers 38 smith l.f gifford hess to the members of the freshman class saturday afternoon by the triangle society of the y m c a elaborate plans now being made indicate that a delightful afternoon is in store for the first year men who attend the triangle society which first appeared on the campus as the sponsor of the successful frosh smoker held early in de cember has undertaken an even bigger task in this dance but the enthusiasm with which the announcement of the dance was welcomed leads the committee on arrangements to believe that more men will attend than were present at the smoker the tri angle society intends to make this dance the first big social function of the year so far as the freshmen are concerned this informal dance will be held in the delta tau delta house which was voluntarily offered to the chairman of the committee in charge homer heller the ball room one pf the largest available will be at tractively decorate for the oc casion whether the color scheme is to be green or not has not yet been decided the danc ing will start at three o'clock and continue until six while many members of the class will escort girls of their own choosing invitations have been extended to the girls of the moravian college cedar crest feminine seminary and the yeung women's club of beth lehem for those others who will be present the patrons and patronesses for this tea dance will be dr and mrs richards dean and mrs mcconn prof and mrs reiter and mrs g r booth of the women's club of beth lehem brown and white help make it four straight to morrow night if you have not turned in your epi tome ballot lehigh team was apparent from the opening whistle when the brown and white men as sumed the lead and were never in danger of being overtaken the first half ended with le high on the long end of a 26 to 14 score rutgers staged a ral ly in the second half but they only succeeded in scoring one more point than lehigh in this half and the game ended with lehigh having an eleven point lead two of the brown and white regulars gallagher and e schaub were forced out of the contest early in the econd half but c schaub and gualco filled their places capably ' and thus enabled the team from bethle hem to maintain the excellent teamwork lehigh had a decid ed advantage in goals from the field scoring twenty to twelve for the home team rutgers had the advantage from the fif teen footmark however but c who attend the triangle society which first appeared on the campus as the sponsor of the successful frosh smoker held early in de cember has undertaken an even bigger task in this dance but the enthusiasm with which the announcement of the dance was welcomed leads the committee on arrangements to believe that more men will attend than were present at the smoker the tri angle society intends to make this dance the first big social function of the year so far as the freshmen are concerned this informal dance will be held in the delta tau delta house which was voluntarily offered to the chairman of the committee in charge homer heller the ball room one pf the largest available will be at tractively decorate for the oc casion whether the color scheme is to be green or not has not yet been decided the danc ing will start at three o'clock and continue until six while many members of the class will escort girls of their own choosing invitations have been extended to the girls of the moravian college cedar crest feminine seminary and the yeung women's club of beth lehem for those others who will be present the patrons and patronesses for this tea dance will be dr and mrs richards dean and mrs mcconn prof and mrs reiter and mrs g r booth of the women's club of beth lehem brown and white help make it four straight to morrow night if you have not turned in your epi tome ballot
