empire architecture began to play an irn portant part in egyptian construc tion during this period one after another of the architectural forms made their appearance to which almost as much as to the powerful rulers who governed them the lost or new empire owes its glory and greatness like those of the preceding period the monuments of the middle empire are mainly sepul chral two types exist the one constructed in the pyramid form and the other consisting of rock hewn tombs pierced in the vertical cliffs of the west bank of the nile the walls of these tombs are generally covered with paintings but are entirely descriptive and not intended as a means of beauti fying only when as in the case of tombs as at bein-hassan an effort at distinctively decorative treatment appears in the design can such construction be dignified by the name of architecture here mr biggin showed ex amples of columns of the clustered and polygonal types as all styles of architecture are but evolved from some preceding one so the connection of these forms of egyp tian columns with subsequent kinds of the greek doric order is sug gested the section plan and ele vation of these rock-hewn temples were shown together with interior decorations of the private architecture of the middle empire nothing remains for far from being built in the solid and enduring manner in which the egyptians constructed their tombs and temples no attempt seems to have been made to erect houses that should last longer than their owners of the temples of this period only two remain of im portance and both belong to the twelfth dynasty abb 2200 b c some badly shattered fragments have been discovered among the ruins of bubastis which show the clustered type of lotus column the other constituted the earliest portion of the great temple at karnak itself a creation of the later or new empire structural stone columns as well as those cut in the rock were therefore known and used in this early time 220 b c in fact it is probable thai the whole architectural system ot the new empire was an evolution of the ideas developed during the age that has been considered an that the use of columns and the erection of temples of complex plan together with the adornment of these by sculpture carving and pamied reliefs were perfectly la miliar to the builders of this period but the works of the middle em pire have perished
