at the regular meeting of the agora on thursday evening the question " should an inventor monopolize his own inventions ? " was debated upon by messrs childs and ellenbogen for the affirmative and messrs shuman and stauffer for the negative both sides had carefully prepared for the occasion and argued with spirit the society discussed the matter in general during the temporary withdrawal of the judges messrs hood hazel and watts and the decision in favor of the affirmative was received amidst great enthusi asm after a few brief remarks by hood 97 upon the exercises just completed a communication from lafayette naming monday may 3 as the date for holding the annual lehigh-lafayette debate was read and acted upon newton 98 and stauffer 1900 were proposed for membership attention was then called to the fact that the time is rapidly drawing nigh for the intercollegiate oratorical contest at allentown and to the necessity of choosing a representative mr hood was granted full power to act for the society with regard to the matter the debate as announced for the next meeting thursday feb 18 will be upon the subject üßeu be solved that an advance in science is detrimental to mankind the speakers on this occasion will be binkley 97 thomas 97 and eecords 98 for the affirmative and watts 98 hazel 98 and shimer 99 for the negative a more extensive program for the evening will be announced later for thursday feb 25 the question for discussion will be resolved that a course in elec trical engineering offers greater ad vantages to a young man than a course in civil engineering the winning side to compete with the mechanicals on the thursday fol lowing ♦ yale will row the crew of the university of wisconsin about june 1 in new haven harbor mr justus a b cowles 88 has been engaged to coach the columbia university crew for the coming season a contract has been signed at cornell whereby coach courtney will remain with the crew for three more years e-lerm s warner cornell 94 will coach the eleven at that uni versity next fall the brown university baseball team has begun practice in the cage and losing but one man will in all probability place as strong if not a stronger team in the field this year than last absences mustard and cheese the play to be produced this year by the mustard and cheese dramatic association has been finally decided upon by the com mittee having the matter in charge copies of the play are now ready and trials for positions in the caste will be held at the end of this week every position is va cant and open to any man in college it is hoped that there will be a large number of appli cants as in this way only can the best caste be chosen notices on wednesday morning feb 17 a representative 1 the brown and while will be in jim's room for the purpose of collecting sub scriptions every man is espe cially urged to pay up and all who wish to subscribe lor the remainder of the term can do so for 1.25 freshman mechanicals the class is divided for shop visits as follows : section a abbott to dorch in clusive ; section b drake to mc vey inclusive ; section c meixell to turner inclusive the class will provide them selves with a list of machine parts note book and pad of cross-section paper about sxb inches section will report on days scheduled on roster at l v r r o station for first shop visit train leaves easton at 2.80 p m b h jones instructor exclusion limits owing to the necessity of taking electro metallurgy with the seniors the junior electricals will be com pelled to carry alternating currents over to next year orations for the junior contest february 22 have been accepted by the committee from childs kodjbanoff starkey lless and kneas there will probably be quite a revival in tennis this year as a number of freshmen have signi fied their intention of joining the tennis club the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa monday february 15 1897 vol iv no 32 convention of inter collegiate lacrosse association the annual convention of the in tercollegiate lacrosse association was held in philadelphia at the ho tel lafayette on saturday representatives were present from stevens johns hopkins and le high the latter being represented by manager irwin and captain merriman the following schedule for the coming season was arranged : may 8 stevens vs johns hop kins at baltimore may 15 johns hopkins vs le high at south bethlehem may 22 stevens vs lehigh at hoboken the officials for the games to gether with alternates were also selected stevens protested two of the four goals made by lehigh in the game with them last year and thereby the championship tor 1896 under the rules the protest could not be sustained and the champion ship was formally awarded to le high the time of play in the cham pionship games was reduced from two forty-five-minute halves to two thirty five-minute halves the date of the next convention was fixed for the first saturday in november 1897 the following officers were elect ed for the ensuing year : president w 11 maddon johns hopkins ;
