civil en gineering students concerning hydraulic engineering and water supply in room 12 in packer hall on saturday morn ing the lecture is to be held at nine o'clock and although it is primarily a departmental lec ture anyone who is interested in that subject and is free at that hour is welcome to attend mr merriman is at present the chief engineer of the board of water supply of new york city and one of the nation's foremost authorities on hydral ics he is the joint author ol the text book on hydraulics now used in lehigh he is the son of professor merriman one time head of the department of civ il engineering here at lehigh and well nown in engineering circles it should be distinguished that this is a lecture arranged by the department of civil en gineering and is not a meeting of the c e society mr mer riman is one of the prominent professional men who are con nected with the university in the capacity of lecturer following the custom adopted since assuming the reins as coach of soccer at lehigh uni versity j h carpenter submits his selection of an all-state soc cer team from the various clubs represented in the pennsylvania state soccer league after per sonal observation of all teams in action in his comments coach carpenter says my selection is based upon players i have personally seen in action this season and with out fear or favor and unbiased opinion of others the stand ing of the league at the close of the season has no bearing what ever on my selection before going into detail of the various players i wish to congratulate haverf ord on winning the state league championship they had a wonderful balanced team which gave a good account of it self throughout the season an other question in my mind at this time is the selection of an all-state team by james mc pete haverford coach mr mcpete or any other coach in the intercollegiate lea gue should confine his selection exclusively to the clubs of which he has had the opportunity to witness the players in action and not trespass upon another con on page 4 col 3 frosh wrestlers hard at work 1926 epitomes now on sale preparation for gruelling schedule is going on in the face of coming exams heavyweights needed on wednesday dec 17 the chemical society gave a dinner and xmas party which probab ly excelled any affair exer be fore given on the campus by a student society starting at 6 30 p m a full course dinner was served the dinner consisted of bouillon fol lowed by veal loaf boiled pota toes peas butter and rolls cof fee fruit punch cake candy and mince pie ala diefender fer immediately following the dinner mr a e buchanan ch e 18 entertained for an hour with his tricks of the magic art his exhibition was very clever and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone no sooner had the magician finished his program when the jingle of bells was heard and santa claus descended the chimney bearing many gifts two of the best gifts were re spectively a bottle of beer for prof diefenderfer and a pret zel two feet in diameter for harvey schock the basement of the new ad dition to the chemical building was the scene of the festivities in one corner stood a real xmas tree decorated with 200 colored lights and various chemical ap paratus beside the tree was the open fireplace through which santa made his entry japanese lanterns covered all the lights candles burned upon con on page 4 col 6 tempting to make their part of the score an even 50 in response to requests from the cheering sections lehigh now has a well bal anced basketball team and there is great hopes of winning the remaining games on the sche dule the squad has been hard at work during the past ten days and are getting into their stride the defects that were noticeable in the seton hall game have been smoothed out and the two men who were out on account of injuries are back gallagher and hess have re covered from hurts received in the princeton game and played their usual sterling game for the brown and white in the game on wednesday the team will journey to rut gers over the week-end and ex pect to defeat the quintet repre senting the new brunswick school with a fine schedule this year basketball should provide an in teresting and successful season most of the games are to be played in taylor gym so there will be plenty of opportunities for the brown and white fans to see their team the senior class ballots to be handed in at early date basketball quintet travels to new brunswick to meet the scarlet five on monday afternoon jan uary 12th at 4 p m the try outs for berths on the varsity wrestling team will be held the tryouts will be completed on the wrestling room mat and bill sheridan s^own and white coach will officiate provided that the trials take more time than can be spared in the after noon it is more than probable that they will be extended through the following after noon the results of these tryouts will determine the men in the various weights to represent lehigh on the mat this coming season there is a squad of ap proximately fifty candidates in cluding the freshmen who grap ple daily and it is very evident that spirited competition will ensue there are a number of new men that show promise but there is a distinct scarcity of heavyweight material in the trials a six-pound allowance will be granted however by the inter-collegiate rules no ex cess poundage is allowed over the stipulated limit the first meet of the season will be at annapolis where the brown and white matmen will exchange headlocks with the powerful navy aggregation of grapplers the victors in the trial events will wrestle for the honor of lehigh in this contest unless of course some unfor seen accident necessitates other arrangements friday evening at 7:30 the brown and white varsity na tors will meet the freshman team in what promises to be one of the best early season clashes ever held at the taylor pool the freshmen are conceded a slight edge over the varsity the latter being . considerably weakened by the loss of ra leigh the backstroke and re lay are the events which the varsity will suffer raleigh be ing the star of these two events last season coach gulick states however that al will be in condition by the time of the new york university meet the freshman team is one of the best well balanced group of swimmers that have graced the pool for some time and will bear watching in this meet with the more seasoned members of coach gulick's charges evi dence of their prowness may be gleaned from the fact that wed nesday leader the frosh hope in the breast stroke broke the university pool record by two and one-tenths seconds his time for the distance being 3 min utes 7.2 seconds hobbs in the dives has been showing rare skill and riker may be counted on frosh home the competitors for the bus iness staff of the 1927 epitome started selling subscriptions for the 50th edition of this publica tion on tuesday the members of the committee are getting the material ready for the printers a pittsburgh concern and a very attractive price arrangement has been made with the sale of five hundred books the price of each subscription will be four dollars this is considerably lower than the price has been for several years and a very at tractive book is being planned the senior section is also near ing completion and the commit tee has been working hard to make this the best possible january twenty-fifth has been set as the last day on which sub scriptions can be placed so everyone should place their or der immediately so that the low est possible price can be ob tained from the printers the lehigh quintet defeated toronto university in a fast cage contest on wednesday night in taylor gym the final score was 46-28 although out played during a greater part of the game the canadians put up a fine battle from start to finish the game was the fourth on the schedule of both teams and is the third victory for the brown and white cage men at a pre vious meeting of these teams two years ago toronto came out on the long end of the score and lehigh was out to even up mat ters this year wedneday's contest numbers the fourth de feat suffered by the toronto team this season the brown and white floor men show considerable im provement in their style of play and gave a fine exhibition of pass-work the team has been drilling in this phase of the game in the practices since the holidays and their game shows a big improvement as a re sult lehigh started the scoring in the first few seconds of play by a cleverly executed field goal gallagher got the tap-off and a quick pass from hess to smith placed the ball in the net le hig-h was supreme during the entire first half and scored sev eral times by snappy floor work some long goals from the floor by gallagher featured the first half hutchinson made many spectacular tries for goals in an effort to even the score he seemed unable to locate the basket accurately and missed many of the shots it was their inability to locate the basket that cost the toronto aggrega tion a number of two pointers the defensive work of schaub lehigh guard and of burgess toronto guard were the out standing points at all stages oi the game both men time and again broke up pass work which would have resulted in scores the play was very fast all thru the first half although lehigh established an early lead and re mained at a safe number of points above their opponents their lead was not threatened at any time and the half ended with a score of 21-8 in favor of the brown and white at the beginning of the sec ond half toronto started a rally and dropped in several two pointers before lehigh got started potter a forward for the visitors was responsible for most of his teams points smith of lehigh then got going and succeeded in chalking up no less than eight baskets in this half smith was high scorer of the game dropping in a total of ten field goals and two fouls pot ter was second with a total of
