of edmund spenser's early life little is known except that he was born in london in 1552 and that his people were at the time of the middle class but later rose to prominence he is first heard of in 1568 as a poor student at pem broke hall spenser's literary work began when he entered cambridge he graduated from cambridge in due time but failed to receive a fellow ship for which he had worked very hard at this he was much disap pointed and retired to the north of england in 1579 he appeared in london and it was at this time that he made the acquaintance of the earl of leicester and his nephew sir philip sydney in this year also appeared his shepherd's cal endar consisting of twelve pastoral poems written while in the north of england the criticism on this may be summed up in two clauses ; the measures of the calendar are harmonious and it is the best poetry since chaucer in 1580 through leicester spen ser was appointed private secretary to lord grey by purchase he be came chancellor of the irish court which he held until 1588 he then obtained the chancellor ship of the council of ministers and shortly afterwards purchased from the government the castle of kilcolman here he wrote the faerie queen the first three books of which were completed in 1589 he is said to have first shown them to sydney who was particularly delighted with this new form of genius it was also in this year 1589 that sir walter raleigh during his banishment from eng land visited spenser at kilcolman where they read their verses to each other — raleigh his cynthia and spenser his " faerie queen spenser now visited england partly to publish his faerie queen and partly to meet eliza beth from whom he received a pension of 50 he remained here a year and then returned to kilcol man during his stay in england he had seen considerable of high life and from a satirical poem written shortly after we see that court life did not equal his ideals the next five years were spent in work on the remaining books of continued on third page the pennsylvania intercollegiate oratorical contest will take place at the academy of music allen town on friday evening march 12 tickets can be obtained from meaker 99 starkey 98 horn 98 and hood 97 ross x hood president there will be a re-examination in freshman trigonometry march 13 and one in algebra march 20 c l thoenburg professor the picture of the banjo club will be taken at eggert's studio on saturday march 13 at 1.30 p m examinations in all c e sub jects april 20 at 8.30 a m sophomore class meet ing the sophomore class meeting was held in saucon hall wednes day noon president j w grace presided the fact of the small ness of the class renders it impera tive that each individual do his utmost in paying dues g h wood chairman of the banquet committee reported that the banquet would be held satur day evening march 20 at the sun inn bethlehem plates will be 2.75 and tickets must be secured beforehand it was voted that juniors taking sophomore subjects be allowed to attend the banquet hornor chairman of the calcu lus cremation committee reported that no cremation would be held unless the necessary funds were on hand at the time the fact that the class does not number as many men as previous classes limits them to a cremation in keeping with the size the approximate cost of a cremation is 300 but 200 will be sufficient for 99's purpose various methods to raise the funds were advanced,but none were adopted however it is possible that a cremation could be held without an assessment if the men would but pay their dues the meeting adjourned to meet wednesday march 17 at that time the calculus committee will probably have definite information on the subject our athletic teams the indoor athletic contest to take place between teams from the university of the city of new york and lehigh at the gymna sium of the former on march 19th promises to be a great success the events will be club swinging rope climbing work on the horse horizontal and parallel bars tumb ling fence vault and running high jump mr smith who will man age the trip is busy organizing the team and desires that all who wish to try for places will hand in their names immediately so that work may be begun at once the new york university has not only very generously offered to defray all the expenses of the trip but will the evening after the con test give a dance in le high's honor and do everything in its power to make the team's visit most pleas ant and interesting a number of men have begun regular work and the following are the most promising candidates for the different events : putnam 97 and reamer 1900 for tumbling and horizontal bar ; bailey 98 and reamer 1900 for parallel bars megraw 97 and lindsay 98 for fence vault ; yates 97 and farnham 99 for running higti jump captain putnam had the track candidates out on the field on thursday they are preparing for the annual relay race at the university of pennsylvania on april 24 of last year's relay team hornor is the only one in college and of the track team there remain boyt 97 yates 97 and kodjbanoff 98 in order that the team may be composed of the best men in col lege both lacrosse and baseball captains have consented to permit the candidates for their teams to try for places on the relay team this will allow miller p g senior,97 merriman,'97 80yt,'97 bailey 98 and carmen 99 to compete other promising candi dates are sheppard 97 megraw 97 dehm 98 lindsey 98 kim ball 99 and forbes maeder schwerin j brice a brice rowe and ross irom 1900 the prospects are bright this year for another championship la crosse team there are six of last year's championship team in col lege — pennington 97 goal wil liams,",99 point miller p g cover point ;
