an important meeting of the senior class was held in the loung ing room christmas hall thursday afternoon the chief business be fore the meeting was that relative to the class book the election of class day officers and banquet com mittee mr treichler chairman of the class book committee re ported that the work was progress ing ; that all but eleven men had subscribed and that if five more would subscribe it would enable the committee to insert the history of the university which addition would make the book equally as good if not better than the one published by 96 president senior supplemented the report by a few words asking those non-subscribers to make every effort to comply with the request of the committee chairman johnson of the cap and gown committee made a short report giving the prices at which caps and gowns could be purchased and also the cost of renting some for commencement week upon motion it was decided to elect six men to the banquet com mittee and that the nominations be allowed to remain open for three days the following men were nominated at the meeting yates scott saltzman johnson brady van duyne and boundey it was also moved to elect five men to the class day committee and that these nominations be too left open for three days the nominees were curtis boyt ammen irwin brady sheppard jenks slade yohn chiles clagett on motion the meeting ad journed the nominations for the other class day officers resulted as fol lows ivy orator hood tablet orator loomis ; presentation orator heister ; poet sheppard ; prophet and toast no nominations begin ning with thursday the nomina tions for class day officers will remain open for ten days communication to the editors of the brown and white now that the baseball season is approaching i wish to urge the advisability of again organizing an inter fraternity and inter-club league the plan met with marked success here two years ago and in fact has been successful wherever it has been given a fair trial i would suggest that a schedule of games for the cham pionship of the university be arranged and that a trophy be presented to the winners if in general the plan adopted two years ago be pursued not only will the undergraduates be afforded much amusement but it will de velop material for the varsity of course members of the league will not be sufficiently developed to make the varsity team this season but it may have everything to do with their chances before they leave college track men a team will compete with a team from the new york univer sity at an outdoor to be held in may all places are open and every man in college who has any ability is requested to try for a position putnam captain junior civil shop visit the junior civils spent last sat urday morning at easton and phil lipsburg inspecting the numerous bridges at those two cities all the railroad bridges were visited also the new structure which has taken the place of the old timothy palmer bridge between the two cities the structure is a very beautiful one and built on the can tilever plan it was designed by professor porter of lafayette col lege and built by the union bridge company of new york,and completed last june the trip was a profitable one and many more of the same character will probably be taken by the clas during the term visit to the univer sity most of the clergymen who are in town attending the conference of the methodist episcopal church visited the university wednesday afternoon mr.wolle very kindly repeated his organ recital of mon day evening it was highly ap preciated especially by the more musically inclined of whom there were a great number president drown in a short address gave them a most cordial welcome and invited them to visit the different buildings and inspect the work in the various departments baseball team carman 99 who has been elected captain of the baseball team has the candidates still at work in the gymnasium but outdoor practice will be begun as soon as the weather and condition of the field will permit mr bannon will arrive tuesday and will take charge of the team immediately he will pay par ticular attention to developing the batteries and it is hoped that any one who has ever done any pitch ing or wishes to make a twirler of himself will report for trial on tuesday afternoon the management has issued a notice to the candidates to observe strict training and report daily for practice instead of three times a week as heretofore great stress is laid upon the weight that steady and conscientious work will have in the final selections for the va rious positions as stated some time ago the scrub will be a regular organiza tion with mr smith as captain shepp 98 as manager a number of games have been arranged and the manager is negotiating for sev eral others will the student who finds the following mistake in a set of al teneder instruments kindly return the instruments to the supply bureau for correction : compass stamped 48 ; lengthening bar 42 ' pen 42 ? there will be a very important business meeting of the epitome board at the phi gamma delta house on wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock j b lindsey editor-in-chief the harvard-pennsylvania dual games will be held on may 8 at cambridge the first 280 pages of the epito me have gone to press lehigh university south bethlehem pa monday march 22 1897 vol iv the brown and white ko 42 athletics the team which mr smith will take to new york with him next friday to contest with the univer sity of new york will consist of putnam yates and megraw 97 bailey and lindsey 98 farnham h e knight and sanchez ; 99,and eeamer and eowe 1900 lehigh will be represented in tumbling and on the horizontal bar by putnam and eeamer in the fence vault by megraw and lindsey in the running high jump by yates and farnham in club swinging by bailey and farnham on the horse by h e knight and sowe and in the rope climbing by megraw h e knight and san chez a beautiful silk banner will be awarded to the winning team and the evening after the contest a col lege dance will be given in honor of lehigh not knowing what the new york university team is capable of doing we are unable to make any estimates in regard to the re sult of the contest but wish the team the best of success calendar tuesday march 23 — mr emery's lecture on " the university wits vine street school house at 8 p m wednesday march 24 handicap shoot of the gun club at traps 3.30 p m meeting of epitome board phi gamma delta house 2 p.m meeting of m e section physical laboratory at 7.30 p m thursday march 25 meeting of agora saucon hall 7 p m meeting of electrical engi neering society physical la boratory 7 p m friday march 26 meeting of chess club christmas hall 7.30 p m gymnastic team contests with new york university at new york arrival of baseball coach every man who intends to make the scrub or ' varsity r must appear at the gym nasium at 4 p m saturday march 27.—ke-examina tion in english all classes ec-examination in sopho more electrical laboratory modern languages,all classes sunday _ march 28 meeting of christian association christ mas hall 6.15 p m subject " heart and mouth eom 10 • 1-10 summer shop visits professor klein this morning addressed the sophomore mechani cal section in regard to taking the junior shop visits during june and july instead of the firs term junior year he stated that it would require twenty-four days working seven hours a day to get through the work prescribed the shop visits will not have to be written up and no examination will be held but the instructors will each day give marks which will be averaged at the end of the term and from that will be judged whether or net one has a passing knowledge of the subject professor klein spoke very much in favor of the scheme but said that those passing off the shop visits in the summer would be re quired to take political economy once a week and some electrical laboratory work during the first term junior at 10.30 o'clock the section held a meeting in christmas hall at which a committee was appointed to draw up a communication to embody in substance that it is the general opinion of the section that they are scheduled to do more work than they can do thoroughly that in order to lighten this work and give them more time to devote to their mathematics they volun teered to do a portion of this work during summer therefore they are opposed to having extra work scheduled to take the place of the shop visits on motion adjourned notices meeting of the mathematical club physical laboratory tuesday march 23 at 7 p m the paper for the evening on " the analytical geometry of the complex vari able will be read by zimmer man 98 b h jones instructor freshmen m e section will report next week on days as given on roster at cor ner second new streets for third shop visit senior class meeting
