tuesday and thurs day evenings at 7.30 o'clock sharp the debate for tuesday is upon the question resolved that the present powers of the speaker of the house are a menace to good government messrs hood and records will present the affirma tive and horn and childs defend the negative every member of the society should attend as other important business is to be acted upon horn pies freshmen re examinations in al gebra and trigonometry have been postponed until april 3 c l thornburg american philosophi cal society at a meeting of the american philosophical society on friday march 19 in philadelphia a pa per was read by drs houston and kenneliy on the insulating me dium surrounding a conductor the real path of the current prof rowland of johns hopkins and dr macfarland of lehigh univer sity were especially invited to be present and take part in the dis cussion of the paper this subject is one of intense in terest to electrical engineers ami of general interest to all who are in terested in the advance of science all questions about the nature of electricity and its means of propagation have puzzled the heads of scientists ever since any thing has been known about it and by far the majority of those ques tions still remain unsolved drs houston and kenneliy are well known in the electrical world as original investigators of no small merit ana me present pa per is no exception to their high standard in view of these facts and of he general interest taken in such a dis cussion dr macfarlane has very kindly consented to present the gist of this paper together with the discussion on thursday night april 1 at 7.30 under the au spices of the electrical engineer ing society while this paper will be of chief interest to electrical engi neers there will probably be much of interest to those who have not made such a careful study of this branch of science the meeting will be held in the lecture room of the physical labor atory and a most cordial invita tion is extended to all junior class meeting a meeting of the junior class was held in the physical labora tory on friday immediately after the college meeting president farwell called the meeting to order aud owing to the absence of the secretary the read ing of the minutes of the preced ing meeting were dispensed with webster presented the resolu tions on the death of frank f daves a classmate during the freshman year which were unani mously adopted w b wood presented a report showing the condition of the treas ury and all the receipts and ex penditures from the beginning of the sophomore year the report was unanimously accepted after considerable discussion on the finances of the class the meet ing adjourned .» easter vacation will begin wed nesday april 14 at 12.30 p m and ends april 21 at 8.15 p m college mass meeting pursuant to the request of the faculty the entire undergraduate body was assembled in the hall of the physical laboratory on friday noon although the nature of the meeting was not divulged before hand it was generally understood that matters relative to the honor system would be discussed president drown conducted the meeting and made a few remarks concerning the attendance of the students at chapel he stated that he had no reason to be dis satisfied with the attendance at weekday chapel but that the sun day attendance was not what it should be he thought that this state of affairs arose from careless ness or the self-indulgence of some of the students and hoped that in the future better results would be attained furthermore he remarked that the prime motive of holding the meeting was the consideration of the honor system in regard to which president drown said : the reason oi bringing the subject of the honor system before the whole body of the students at this time was due to th fact it had been frequently said of late by the students that there was a good deal of cheating in recitations and examinations going on which was never reported to the honor court and that the system was not working satisfactorily in re straining fraudulent practices commenting on these state ments president drown said that he was convinced from inquiries he had made that the number of in stances of cheating had been greatly exaggerated and he was also convinced that the honor sys tem as now in operation was a power for good he further said it was the opinion of all the mem bers of the faculty that since the introduction of the system three or four years ago there had been a marked improvement in the moral tone of the students with reference to their college exercises it could not be said that cheating had en tirely disappeared from the uni versity but it was their decided opinion that there was much less of it than formerly and that it was on the decline still as there was dissatisfaction expressed oti the part of some students with the working of the system it was thought best to refer the subject back to the students for their con sideration that they might make any modifications in its working methods they thought desirable for it must be distinctly borne in mind that the honor system origin ated with the students ; indeed it could in the nature of things have no other origin the faculty had merely acquiesced in the system as submitted to them by the students as a guide for their discussions the president presented a ballot to continued on third page new york university 38 lehigh 34 the gymnastic team left for new york friday morning at 12.10 on the central railroad of new jer sey after arriving in new york the team was taken up town by manager smith to morris heights where two representatives of new york university were on hand to conduct the men to the university where a pleasant time was spent in going over the buildings seeing the grounds and meeting our hosts several fraternities very hospitably entertained the different members of the team and did all in their power to make our visit a pleasant one the contest began soon after eight before a large audience con sisting largely of pretty girls the night was pertect and circumstances seemed to combine to make the meet most successful for the first half of the contest lehigh main tained a strong lead and it looked as if she was a sure winner in the second half however new york university forged slightly ahead and won by the score of 38 to 34 the criticism that must be passed upon the lehigh team is that the men lacked form and though they generally did more difficult things than their oppo nents the new york university men excelled us in style after the contest a pleasant dance was given in the gymnasium in honor of lehigh it was pleas ing to note the friendly spirit that characterized the contest especial ly as a meet between the track teams of the two universities is to take place some time in may these friendly contests will be of mutual benefit and will help us de velop two branches of sport that have been somewhat
