vacation siegmund raine and barba are outstanding runners of team — ridsdale a big loss final game with lafayette shows a big comeback for the brown and white booters lehigh director believes gridiron game is great educa tional sport and as such should be run by academic heads y public ledger extract the victorious freshman team points to lehigh's success in future years six years straight two widely different types of basketball will be played when the toronto cage-men clash with lehigh on january 7 at lehigh the toronto squad will represent the canadian type and lehigh the american because of the high rank of each team in its own particular style of playing the game will be of unusual interest to bas ketball fans in furnishing a ba sis of comparison of the cana dian game with the american as it is played at toronto uni versity basketball is based to a great extent on hockey the ball being passed in much the same way as the puck two years ago lehigh play hess still incapacitated ed the toronto five and was beaten by three points altho the toronto cage - men have maintained their high reputa tion since then jim baldwin is confident of a victory for le high as the tsam this year is in much better shape than it was at that time practice will be suspended during the holidays the practice after vacation will be on january 5 with the exception of hess whose knee was hurt in the la fayette game the team will all be in fine condition hess is still troubled by his knee and will not play in the toronto game it is doubtful whether he will play at all this season wrestlers get vacation rest commons liable to be closed coach sheridan ready to start men in on heavy grind at close of holi day season publicity given the # athletes particularly those of the fresh man and sophomore classes the absence of faculty control and interest also is wrong it is the appendages which must be corrected football is too grand a sport to be marred or injured and perhaps killed by these outgrowths football with all these addi tions is top-heavy now and it is going to fall unless something is done about it the first thing that should be done i believe is to educate the faculty to the game and its possibilities the faculty gen erally is to blame for the con ditions which now surround football the faculty has per mitted the control of the game to drift out of their hands into the hands of graduates who be lieve loyalty to their alma ma ter consists primarily of effort expended to produce a winning team if the factulty realized the true value of football to under con on page 3 col 4 action taken by board of trustees shows it advisable to discontinue the din ing^all no subject connected with in tercollegiate athletics has been given more thorough lashing than this one what is wrong with college football dr c w savage of oberlin pointed out a number of things he believed wrong with the game at a meeting of the mid dle states collegiate athletic conference here saturday night the same question was put to bosey reiter former prince ton star who is now director of athletics at lehigh nothing is wrong with the game of football he replied the emphasis he put on game was significant the wrong he continued is in the appendages by the appendages i mean the exces sive number of classes missed by the players which is neces sitated by three and four day trips for games and out-of-town training prior to big games the hysteria of the crowds the win at-any-cost spirit and undue want a guarantee ballots for senior class book wanted soccer men awarded letters fritz mercur elected cap tain also follows in broth er bob's footsteps will not be put in the epi tome if not turned in be fore jan 10th — final statement frosh swimmers competing with the three upper classes easily won the inter class swimming meet on monday evening by earning 38 points the seniors finished second with 27 1-2 points the sopho mores third with 18 1-2 points and the juniors finished in last place having scored 10 points the r~-et was the first swim ming competition of the season and the victors of the evening the freshmen are soon to ap pear in public again when they go up against the varsity in a lehigh vs lehigh match the frosh have the most promising material in years and many of the men are prep school swim mers of note the freshmen have no con servative schedule this year and have several meets now under contract it is rumored that they are to take on bethlehem high tankmen later in the sea son the results of the inter-class meet follow 220-yard relay — freshmen first seniors second sopho mores third juniors fourth time 1.51 4-5 fancy diving — hobbs freshmen first astarita sen ior second van north fresh men third 50-yard swim — raleigh first savitz senior second allen freshmen third time 26 1-5 plunge for distance — de long junior first mills soph omore second harmon senior third distance 54 feet 100-yard swim savitz sen ior first kellogg freshmen second ; arnold sophomore thidr time 1.06 1-5 100-yard backstroke — wynn freshmen first hobbs fresh men second saxton senior third time 1.19 100 breast stroke — leader freshmen first freeman jun ior second lee sophomoro third time 1.22 1-5 220-yard swim — harmon senior first reiker freshman second pennington sophomore third time 2.50 2-5 the brown and white cross cotintry team recently conclud ed a fairly successful season by landing fourth place in the middle atlantic states inter collegiates the harriers under the leadership of captain clar ence porter won two of their dual meets and dropped a sim ilar number morris kanaly's hill and dal ers started off the season with the annual inter mural run in which meet the members of the varsity team were picked this meet was closely followed by one with dickinson which le high won by a score of 26 to 29 in this meet the work of sieg mund raine and barba stood out the following wednesdas the squad journeyed to easton where a meet with the maroon virals was staged this meet proved to be the fastest of the season lafayette's runners breaking a long standing course record three days later the brown and white runners defeated muhlenberg over the latters home course to a score of 25 to 30 barba proved to be the fleetest of the pack that day leading both teams by a sub stantial margin the last dual meet was held at schenectady where coach h anson brube's charges were met the union team one week later to be acclaimed the mid dle atlantic champions proved to be too hard a combination for the lehigh harriers to combat with winning by a score of 15 to 40 the intercollegiates held at van courtland park new york was won by union with rut gers second lafayette third lehigh fourth muhlenberg fifth new york university sixth and dickinson seventh in looking forward to next season the brown and white squad will lose three men ex captain siegmund captain por ter and ayres all of these men have been mainstays to the team and their places will be hard to fill the men who will be available next season are captain-elect barba platt maxwell askin laudig raine ridsdale a member of last years team will also be avail able with the return of the above veterans the possibility of lehigh having one of the best teams in a number of years is assured notice with this issue the brown and white suspends publi cation until friday january 9th 1925 the university commons will serve its last meal satur day the commons was open ed in 1907 and was conducted successfully until just after the war since that time the pat ronage has fallen off to such an extent that it was deemed ad visable to close up to continue operation would require the guarantee of 150 men served the greatest part of those who have been eating at the commons save in football sea son and at other special occa sions has been drawn from the dormitories the capacity of the two taylor hall and price hall is 171 and to successfully continue the serving of meals 150 men must agree to patron ize the commons for the past two months exclusive of the training table 243 meals a day on an average have been served showing that only about half of the dormitory men have been patronizing it owing to these conditions and the financial loss at which the commons is now being run spe cial action by the board of trustees resulted in the closing of its doors at present peti tions are being circulated among the dormitory men in hope that it may be kept open the commons was instituted under direction of dr henry s drinker and it's success was one of his ambitions under the present system with the small capacity of the dormitories and the large number of students living down town it has been running under difficulties what will be done with the building and the equipment has not been definitely decided upon at this time though several men on the faculty who have seen it running since its inaugu ration hope that the time will come when it will be running at full swing wrestling practice has slack ened up somewhat during the past week owing to the ap proach of the christmas holi days but on the return from the holiday two weeks of stiff practice will make up the pro gram of coach bill sheridan the first meet of the season will be with navy at annapolis on january seventeenth and in order to cope with the strong team that navy is it will be ne cessary for the brown and white grapplers to do all in their power in order to make this meet a success there is still a great need for men in the heavyweight class both in the frosh and varsity teams and any men of this class should come out and report to coach sheridan immediately this call is urgent and any men who have any inclination at all to wards this form of sport should come out and try for it the work on the senior year book is coming along very slow due to the failure of the stu dents to co-operate with the board in charge by not hand ing in their ballots the board wishes to have out the best book possible this year but it can not do so if the students do not do their part l b kingham alpha chi rho is the business manager of the book so that anyone desir ing information in regards this work of the senior class should get in touch with him at once every june graduate should have his picture in the book if the men fail to hand in their ballots along with the required assessment it will naturally be impossible to have a full repre entative showing women's club were hostesses at a special meeting of the board of control of athletics the team for three years was unanimously elected captain for the 1925 sea son fritz played a consis tent game in the very difficult position of center-halfback and he is thus following in the footsteps of his brother bob who captained the team three years ago when lehigh won the state championship the women's club of beth lehem were hostesses to more than a hundred lehigh stu dents last saturday afternoon when they gave a most enjoy able tea dance the ladies left nothing un done in their attempt to make the afternoon a pleasant one for the one-hundred and thirty six men who availed themselves of the hosptality of the wom en's club the first man is yet to be found who will say that he did not have a delightful after noon by virtue of lehigh's bril liant victory over the lafayette booters an otherwise unsuccess ful or at least mediocre season was transposed into what it can justifiedly be claimed was a sat isfactory one for the brown and white the season opened with a squad of forty-five reporting to coach carpenter among which were a galaxy of last year's stars and plenty of reserve tal ent evident in fact the pros pects were for a season equally as successful as that of 1922 the lehigh dribblers rounded into shape with preliminary games with local soccer clubs and experienced a fair measure of success with these aggrega tions losing only to the cracker jack wanderers by a score of 3 to 0 the season then officially opened with princeton in the tiger's own lair in this con test our team didn't hit its stride until too late and conse quently were trounced 5-2 lack of teamwork and ability to do consistent playing on the offen sive and defensive were mainly responsible for lehigh's down fall in this tilt the team then journeyed to west point where they engaged the army in a battle furious from beginning to end being deprived of two goals by the re feree's whistle which sounded after the points were scored on both occasions the cadets emerged the winners by the nar row margin of one goal the score reading 1-0 about this time injuries play ed havoc with coach carpen ter's machine fernandez was incapacitated with a torn cart ilage of the knee and batz also received an injury to the leg that prevented his playing hubbard developed internal in juries that kept him out of the lineup and frey broke two wrist bones in a scrimmage this na turally wrecked the mechanism of the whole team and it was this crippled organism that limped through the remainder of the season to the lafayette junior classic however the soccer team in a wonderful exhibition of beau tiful playing came from behind and in an extra period game trimmed the n y u dribblers to the tune of 5-3 this game was played in new york and the gotham booters scored three goals in rapid succession at the beginning of the game but in spired by a spirited talk from coach carpenter that aroused the proverbial lehigh fight among the men they crashed through and tied the score in the second half winning in the extra period when maginnis and mercur both notched a tal ly playing home the following week lehigh fell a victim to the cow on page 4 col 3 bethlehem pa friday december 19 1924 brown
