lacrosse lehigh 5 swarthmore 1 lehigh opened the 97 lacrosse season on saturday by defeating swarthmore by a score of 5 to 1 the game began at 3.30 p m with lehigh defending the east goal on the face off lehigh got the ball and in rapid succession three trials at goal were made all of which were wide after a little tipping around their goal swarth more's defense placed it out of danger by a long throw down the field the ball going behind our goal ; williams however secured the ball and tipped to penning^on who threw it back to our attack hannum got the ball and tried for goal but failed roundey then got the ball and shot a goal time 7 minutes score ito 0 ; no shots being made at our goal after the face off the ball tra veled rapidly from one end of the field to the other neither side being able to get a trial at goal the ball went repeatedly out of bounds and had to be faced off again on one of these face offs near our goal swarthmore secured the ball and made their first shot at goal which went wide our defense returned the ball lee get ting it he was fouled and re ceived a free throw merriman got the ball and tipped to eoundey who threw the second goal time 22 minutes score 2to 0 from now on until the end of the half neither side scored much hard playing was done during which time a shot was made at our goal pennington stopping it during a great part of the second half swarthmore played nine men on their defense so that a great deal of the play was in scrimmages in one of these before their goal roundey got the ball and shot a goal time 4j minutes score 3 to 0 soon after the face off eoundey again secured the ball and shot our fourth goal time 6 minutes score 4 to 0 swarthmore now braced up and checked our attack's tipping al though their men could not handle their sticks well enough to serious ly endanger our goal it was only after nine minutes of hard play that lee managed to shoot our fifth and last goal time 15 min utes score sto 0 the play from now on seemed to be rather loose our attack neglecting several easy opportuni ties to shoot goals the defense tipped recklessly in front of goal and it was thus our opponents managed to score for after six teen minutes more of play in a scrimmage before our goal patton batted the ball through time 31 minutes score sto 1 in lehigh's favor we made several more trials at goal none of which went through contiav.ed on second page harvard yale princeton and pennsylvania will compete in a relay race on the track of the new jersey athletic club on may 31 memorial day the oxford and cambridge crews each contained an american among their number in their recent boat race yale and pennsylvania have each offered a prize for the student making the best distance in a foot ball kicking contest to be held later class day at harvard has been changed from june 25 to june 24 to avoid the conflict with the boat race to be rowed on the former date chess club tourna ment the tournament on saturday,be tween the chess clubs of lehigh and the university of pennsylvania resulted in a victory for pennsyl vania the games were well con tested throughout and abounded in much clever playing the team representing championship team george 98 has been elected captain of the scrub and from now on we must have a practice game every after noon all men in college who can play and there are many should consider it their duty to come out t merrimaist the baseball game next satur day with dickinson will be played in the morning and the lacrosse game with harvard in the after noon meeting of athletic committee the athletic committee held a special meeting on friday april 23 to consider the resignation of yates 97 athletic representative-at-large mr yates informed the committee that it was with regret that he had to take this step but that pressure of work made it necessary his resignation was accepted and brady 97 was unanimously elected to fill the place the committee then passed a motion that the expenses of the re lay team to compete at franklin field on saturday be paid by the treasurer other business in regard to hearing from the manager of the football team in reference to a coach and certain games not yet scheduled was postponed until next meeting it was with great pleasure that the committee welcomed one of its alumni members mr howe of philadelphia the mustard and cheese play notwithstanding the inclement weather a fair sized audience com posed of the society of the bethle hems and a few college men wit nessed the annual play of the mus tard and cheese saturday evening at the fountain hill opera house a few alumni were also present to help swell the size of the house the mustard and cheese officers were particularly fortunate this year in their selection of the play to be rendered " the ulster a a short amusing comedy in three acts is well adapted to keep an audience in a roar of laughter mr valentine flipper the aged husband is very jealous of his pretty young wife and finding an ulster in his house one morning he suspects some young man is paying attention to his wife he at once employs a private detective to find who the young man is the love affairs of two young couples are also woven into the plot finally mr flipper decides from the proofs he has gathered and from his wife's own statements 1o apply for a divorce he suspects a pro fessor barton of being the owner of the ulster and calls on him for an explanation but as professor barton is very deaf mr flipper does not get the plot straightened out wilmington mr flipper's son is in love with agnes a daughter of professor barton's while mr flipper is accusing professor barton of being intimate with his wife professor barton thinks flipper is asking for the hand of his daughter in marriage to wilmington in the final scene when all the ulsters with their owners are on the stage mr flip per sees that he has wronged his wife and the two young couples are made happy by the consent of all concerned to their marriage mr smoot as mr flipper was splendid and mr seabrook who took the part of professor barton also distinguished himself mr white as peter jones the new groom created a good deal of amusement the men taking the part of women were a little too much like the new woman that we hear so much about but were very much appreciated and applauded by the audience taken all in all the ulster was a great success and the mus tard and cheese association deserves much credit for the very success ful performance
