gift for anyone and are reasonable in price star tackle was unanimously elected to captaincy last week had most successful year excellent passing game and stalwart defense brings fourth consecutive victory over lafayette to lehigh team game was spectacular in spite of slippery field prospective coach will prob ably visit lehigh this week to sign contract successful at williams tigers claw brown and white in second game of the season hess and gallagher hurt at a meeting of the letter men held this past week how ard e hoddy merrill was un animously elected captain for the 1925 season merrill . has played tackle on the varsity the appointment of percy wendell as head coach of foot ball has been approved by the board of trustees and by president richards all that remains to be done ! s fo r at this time of the year cve r y one is trying to find something appropriate to give as a christ mas gift it is very trying and even at the best it requires much time and money neither of which a college student can afford to spend the self-aid has solved this problem they are selling le high 1925 calendars which are most suitable for a gift to any one the cost is small — only 1.50 which is due to the la r ge number which they ordered the calendar itself has a handsome leather cover with the lehigh seal and 1925 em bossed on it inside there are some goodlooking cuts of the campus and the buildings also the football team with its cap tain and manager do not let this opportunity pass without buying one any of the following men will be only too glad to show and sell you a calendar max le be a mountain of strength on the defense in the con on page 2 col 5 kennedy visitors star all lehigh men will be inter ested in knowing that jack stor er bill hoffman and bill springsteen are making a name for themselves in professional football storer who was captain-elect of this year's team but who had to leave school on account of scholastic difficulties has been playing with the frankford yel low jackets all season while he was in college jack often thrilled the fans with his open field running swift passes and high soaring spirals he is still doing all of those things now and perhaps even more for he is one of the main reasons for the yellow jackets success this season playing right halfback he is used as interference and in the opinion of many of the experts who have seen him play he has few equals in taking a man out of the play playing in a backfield with three former all americans jack is more than holding his own bill springsteen ex captain 23 has been playing with shen andoah and as usual is the ter ror of the line his alertness and his ability to size up the op ponents plays have made him a valuable man cyril bill hoffman 25 has been playing with the yellow jackets since the end of the le high season and although he has only played in two games he has shown up with the best guards in professional ranks and at that is saying quite something many students in intramural sports excellent material in frosh natators great number of men re sults in over-crowded condition of gym « swimming attracts many several men who starred in prep school are candi dates for team other cago and it is expected that he will visit lehigh on his return trip it can easily be said without exaggeration that percy wen dell has been one of the most successful football coaches in america during his regime at williams during his four years at that institution williams has conquered amherst and wesley an in every game these two colleges are williams principal rivals in 1921 the first year that con on page 4 col 4 con on page 4 col 6 fense who formed a solid wall in the path of the ball and quickly returned the ball to la fayette territory with thir teen minutes to go batz who had returned to the lehigh line up after being out of several games because of injures scor ed the first goal for lehigh on a well-directed shot from a scrimmage in front of the goal after a corner kick this dimi nuitive forward played a bril liant game for lehigh and his return to the forwa r d line great ly strengthened the lehigh at tack soon after this hawkins made a wonderful stop by div ing headlong in front of the ball and quickly throwing it out of danger the lehigh forwards walters and fernandez came within inches of scoring another goal in this half but seemingly impossible stops by the lafay ette goalie prevented further scoring in this period the second half was more evenly matched ; lafayette mak ing heroic efforts to even up the score but they found the brown and white defense as im penetrable as it was during the first half early in the half they were awarded a free kick scarcely fifteen ya r ds in front of the goal but the kick went wide soon after this hawkins made another exceptional stop keeping the slate clean the brown and white offense was rapidly improving and fernan dez had two shots at the goal but they both went wide le high was not denied however and with the period about half over mercur got possession of the ball at midfield and dribbled past several lafayette players and about twenty yards f r om the goal passed to fernandez and the latter shot a pretty one past the lafayette goaltender for the remainder of the game lafayette tried hard to score football schedule has been completed chemical society hears talk on soil nine games to be remaining on their feet re gardless of the slippe r y condi tion of the field the brown and white dis played an excellent passing game the forwards having many shots at the goal after the ball had been brought down the field as the result of wonderful teamwork the passing of the forwards was backed up by a staunch defense and with this combination lehigh presented an aggregation which would have been hard for any team to conque r . from the opening whistle after batz scored the first goal the outcome was never in doubt it would be hard to single out any player whose work stood out far above the rest but there were several men who were con spicious by their spectacular fighting spirit fernandez who has been forced to remain on the side-lines much of the sea son because of injuries was at his old position at center for ward and accounted for one of the brown and white tallies early in the second half his knee which has been bothering him all season was again injur ed % scrimmage in front of the goal in spite of this handicap he remained in the game and sco r ed the second goal for le high about the middle of the second half soon after this he was forced to leave the game was very seldom up to hawkins to stop the ball be cause these two stalwarts of the lehigh defense succeeded in booting the ball out of danger on most all occasions the game started with la fayette dribbling the ball from the center position but it was soon returned by the lehigh forwards and was kept in la fayette's te r ritory for a greater part of the half lafayette had a chance to score on a penalty from about twenty yards in front of the goal but the kick was stopped by the lehigh de it would do charlie tay lor's heart good to come back and see the boys packing the place responded professor fay bartlett enthusiastically when asked how things were getting along at the gym though football has held the center of the spotlight since the opening of college and various other ma jor and minor sports will soon be in full swing but with less prominence the facilities offer ed by the department of phy sical education has played a most important part in the training and development of the teams under the inspiring 1 leadership of professor reiter ably assisted by profsesor bart lett not only has the develop ment of material for the teams been successfully carried on but the idea of intra-mural sports and competition has been fostered to such an extent that the gymnasium is now being taxed to its maximum capacity since mr jacob g petrikin has taken up the trials and trib uations of a graduate manager once so competently carried on by professor reiter the latter who is better known on and off con on page 2 col 5 the frosh swimming team this year is probably the first freshman swimming team in the history of lehigh it also promises to be one of the most successful of the freshman teams judging not only from the material but also from the progress that has been made so far under coach gulick a wealth of star swimming material both developed and in the stage of developing seems to be present in the class it is regretable that the varsity team cannot benefit from the freshman swimmers who are now debarred by the one-year ruling wynn a former mercersburg star is a free-style and back stroke artist whose work is go ing to count for the frosh leader another mercersburg start swims the breast-stroke and has done 100 yards in one minute and twenty seconds this is faster than the time of any varsity man hobbs is probably one of the best divers at lehigh besides these men who had been in competitive swimming before coming to le con on page 4 col 5 the brown and white bas ketball team journeyed to princeton on saturday night and felt the tiger's claw by a 29 to 9 defeat in spite of the one-sided score the game was desperately fought until the fin al whistle was blown there were several factors which aid ed in the downfall of the brown and white lack of practice rendered the lehigh offensive rather weak against the strong orange and black defense princeton had a large amount of first class reserve material and frequent substitutions were made by the home team tow ards the end of the first half captain hess was forced to re tire as a result of additional in jury to his knee which had al ready been hurt during the football season another in jury further weakened the brown and white team when gallagher was forced to leave the game because of a sprained ankle the absence of these two players tended to demoralize the lehigh five and their at tack went to pieces and they were forced to rely largely on long shots for the first few minutes of the game the playing was fast and furious and the score was tied at seven all the brown and white failed to locate the basket for the remainder of the half and the first half ended with the score at 13 to 7 le high had several chances to score by the free toss route but failed to make these opportuni ties count in the second half the brown and white team depended most ly on long stabs at the basket only two of which resulted in counters smith scored twice from near mid-floor and both shots were of the sensational variety hynson was the outstanding player for the orange and black scoring three times from the floor and twice from the fifteen foot mark princeton did not show the form in passing that they would ordinarily exhibit at mid-season but the individual playing of their men was suffi cient to conquer the lehigh quintet roberts substituted for hess and although he failed to enter the scoring column played a good floor game and proved himself to be a capable substi tute bond substituted for gal lagher but lacked the experience of hull his opponent the line up was as chemistry building by the lehigh valley section of the american chemical society mr snelling the president in troduced the speaker at the close of the meeting dr j s con on page 4 col 3 four games to be played away and five at home constitute the nine game schedule for the 1925 lehigh football team as official ly announced by graduate man ager petrikin complete 1925 foothball schedule oct 3 — away all but three of these games were announced in the tuesday con on page 3 col 3 the lehigh freshmen bas ketball team lost the first game of the season saturday after noon when the speedy bethle hem prep team defated it by the score of 27-14 at no time during the game did the rresh men seem able to cope with the*r rivals kennedy playing center fo r the visitors opened the scoring thirty seconds after the game started when he completed a foul throw almost immediate ly he followed this with one of his six field goals cassidy bethlehem forward scored two points from foul throws and roberts the other visitfng for ward added two mo r e by a field goal within the first five min utes of play against these seven points lehigh pitted two fouls by marshall center and borman forward during the rest of the half the game was fast and furious though the frosh could not score they would not allow bethlehem to increase its lead noticeably the half ended with the score at 9-3
