dual track meet lehigh 28 n y u 76 the dual games at ohio field saturday between lehigh and new york university marks another step in the reorganization of this branch of athletics at this institu tion in late years our spring meet has been open only to lafay ette the games saturday being the first in which lehigh has com peted with any other college except the annual state and mott haven games our team was beaten by the above score not because we were so much the inferior of the n y u team but for the reason that lehigh did not have as many men entered for each event thus los ing some possible points for seconds and thirds in a few events le high was not entered while in others the team did not equal its work of the spring meet of may 5 falling below in the shot put and both the high and broad jumps hornor was compelled to with draw from the quarter-mile run after having covered half the dis tance in a most creditable manner due to his injured knee and yates was handicapped in the jumping by a weak ankle captain put nam and abbot each won a first in the 100-yard dash and half mile run respectively the summary follows : ■100 yard dash won by putnam lehigh c f foster n y u second yates le high third time 10 2-5 seconds half-mile run won by abbott lehigh b f foster n y u second dehm le high third time 2 miuutes 17 1 5 seconds 120 yard hurdle — won by barringer n y u ; barringer n y tj second mc carty lehigh third distance 86 feet 1 inch pitting the shot won by young n y u ; holderness lehigh second c f fos ter n.y tj third distance 32 feet 7 inches yale and pennsylvania were easy victors in their track meets with harvard and cornell respectively on saturday the harvard-pennsylvania foot ball game has been scheduled for nov 20 at cambridge mr hugh a beaver in spite of the stormy evening a good audience greeted mr beaver friday his talk was along lines of y m c a work the life of st paul as showing a life of un selfish aims and consecrated efforts gave mr beaver his theme '.' paul an old man had seen hardships knd sufferings but he remained stead fast counting it gain that it ; might develop his character and glorify his lord he spoke of mr studd known all over england as an ath lete and yet giving up all his so called brilliant prospects to bury himself in china as his friends called it the time is not past for enduring hardships to him who is faithful to the cause he repre sents come opportunities innu merable for showing the material he is made of mr beaver spoke three-quarters of an hour and directly to the point he has a happy faculty of captivating his hearers by his quick and lucid mannerof speaking starkey 98 has been confined to his bed for several days from the effects of an injury received in the lacrosse practice last week lehigh 6 ; johns hopkins 3 on last saturday lehigh proved herself to be the inter-collegiate lacrosse champion of the united states for the fifth time in her history and for the third successive year the weather was all that could be desired on this eventful day both for the players and for the spectators and it seemed to inspire every one with enthusiasm the crowd included besides a large number of people from the bethlehems the young ladies from bishopthorpe the moravian semi nary and a number of stevens men the cheering was the best that has been heard so far this season having animation and spirit in it lehigh won the toss and defended the east goal the ball was faced off at 3.35 p m hopkins getting possession of it and passing to lehigh's goal where it was caught by gummere and sent to the other end of the field thurston finally getting it and making a trial for goal but failed the ball passed from side to side until finally nay lor received it on a long throw and shot a goal time seven minutes score : le high 0 ; johns hopkins 1 at the face-off hopkins obtained possession of the ball and passed it quickly down the field they made several attempts to shoot goals but by clever work penning ton stopped each try boyt caught the ball and quickly passed it out of danger lee then made two tries for goal and shot a difficult one on the second trial time eleven minutes score lehigh 1 johns hopkins 1 on the third face-off hopkins again captured the ball and a poor attempt was made to shoot a goal boyt again came to the rescue and passed to paddock who passed to symington symington then made two attempts and roundy one to shoot goals but failed but by very clever play on the part of lehigh's attack roundy was able to get the ball again and succeeded in shooting lehigh's second goal time fifteen minutes score : lehigh 2 ;
