junior e e shop visit a most pleasant and profitable shop visit was made by the junior electricals last week to plants in new york and vicinity the section left south bethlehem or thursday afternoon and made the st denis hotel their headquarters friday morning the broad street station of the new york telephone company and the plant of the western union tejegraph com pany were inspected many new ideas and much information were received at each place after dinner the men assembled at the postal telegraph and cable company's plant and from there proceeded to the electrical plant in siegel & cooper's store this was a very interesting station being equipped with eight large sie menx-llalske machines and an ele vator plant of fourteen lifts, equipped with sprague apparatus saturday morning the cracker & wheeler works at ampere were visited where mr s l g knox escorted the party through and in the evening the telephone ex change at newark afterward the section disbanded part going to the game at hoboken and part spending the evening in n ew york lacrosse lehigh g ; stevens 4 lehigh won the intercollegiate lacrosse championship by defeating stevens at lloboken saturday throughout the entire game le high's superiority was evident and at only one time was the result in any way doubtful an audience of twelve hundred people witnessed the game and the rivalry between the two colleges made every min ute of play more than usually in teresting the game began promptly at 3.30 p m for the first fifteen minutes the play was very fast and neither side was able to gain any advantage then by pretty pass ing and stick work lehigh forced the ball down to stevens goal and in a scrimmage around the goal the ball was put through this was shortly followed by another prettily thrown goal stevens then seemed to take a brace and by hard and rapid playing passed the ball into lehigh's territory where a pretty pass was made to scott who shot the ball through lehigh's goal posts the first half ended with neither side scor ing again score first half le high 2 ; stevens 1 in the first few minutes of play in the second half lehigh shot a goal and then appeared to settle down and their play seemed to be come almost listless stevens took advantage of this and shot two goals in quick succession this made lehigh realize that they must play to win the game and ' from now on they exhibited a pretty game of lacrosse by accu rate tipping and pretty stick work five goals in quick succession were shot stevens then put a goal through and two minutes before the game ended lehigh shot the final goal fixing the score at 9 to 4 in the last half grelle of ste vens was forced to leave the game on account of injuries received and captain merriman withdrew edgar for lehigh merriman and boyt did excellent work while syming ton's goal-shooting was very ac curate in the second half koundy shot perhaps the prettiest goal of the game from at least twenty yards distance for stevens sofio made some pretty stops of shots at goal and although injured several times he played a plucky game throughout scott and brunner were also very good in their tipping and stick work the teams lined up as follows : lehigh positions stevens pennington goal sofio williams point . . . . buckley miller cover point wacliter boyt first defense grelle g-ummere second defeuse kiddle paddock third professor macfarlane head of the department of electrical engi neering at lehigh on tuesday may 18 delivered before the american institute of electrical engineers an important paper upon the application of hyperbolic analysis to the discharge of a condenser considering the differential equa tion of the second order showing the relation between quantity and time as variables and the resis tance capacity and induction of the circuit as constants as derived from the principle of the conserva tion of energy dr macfarlane first called attention to the three different pairs of roots resulting from the three possible relations between the constants of thejequa tion giving a brief outline of the treatment and discussion of the same as given heretofore in this manner he clearly demonstrated the inconvenience and lack of con ciseness of the former solution for the two real roots of the equation given as compared with that of the apparently analogous case of the imaginary solved by circular analysis proceeding thereupon with the solution of this former unsatis factory case upon the principles of hyperbolic analysis the analogue of the circular employed in the latter the final result arrived at in this method of solving for the real roots is as clear and easy of discussion as that secured for the imaginary which has proved so highly satisfactory both the methods and final form of the equations are entirely parallel throughout in conclusion dr macfarlane for a brief space considered the the separating or intermediate case to the other two the circular and the hyperbolic thus far considered treating the resulting value as though represented graphically by a straight line lie however states that probably the true solution therefor is of a nature parabolic as being the entirely natural separa ting form for the other two this paper aside from its signifi cance to students of electricity and apart from its application to an almost innumerable number of other physical phenomena previ ously discussed with the greatest difficulty is of the greatest inter est and importance to students of pure mathematics by all who have had the pleasure of reading it and the ability of understanding the principles involved therein it has been received with unreserved delight together with its pre decessors from the same pen and upon the same general theme it has undoubtedly marked a noted advance in scientific knowledge its value is undeniable lehigh university south bethlehem pa monday may 24 1897 no 57 the brown and white vol iv calendar wednesday may 26 —
