l h b fielder fitzgerald f b bird scranton 18 scrub o on saturday afternoon the scran ton wheelmen defeated the lehigh scrub on the former's grounds be fore a crowd of 500 people the defeat was no disgrace the average weight of the scranton team being 178 pounds and most of their gains were made by drop ping the guards and tackles back and running them through the line carman was the bright particu lar star on the lehigh team time and again he downed the backs for a loss of 5 yards besides getting into every possible play mason sanders becerra also distinguished themselves lehigh's light backs were unable to buck the line successfully and their largest gains were made around the ends lehigh won tjh.e toss and chose the north goal johnson caught the kick off and gained 8 yards on the first down lehigh received 10 yards for off side play but im mediately lost the ball on a fumble carman threw posner for a 12-yard loss but then by steady plunges through the tackles and centre the ball was forced to lehigh's 5-yard line and conroy was shoved over the line for a touchdown decker kicked goal time 10 minutes lehigh kicked off scranton made 15 yards then lost the ball on down slade made one yard around the end not being able to gain the required distance scranton again obtained the ball and by steady gains the ball was again car ried over the line by conroy the goal was again kicked from that time lehigh braced up get ting the ball on downs they forced it for awhile slowly but surely to ward scranton's goal on scran ton's 25-yard line the ball was lost owens made 30 yards around left end but with a clear field be fore him was thrown by graff by a headlong tackle from the rear time was called shortly afterwards the ball being scranton's in mid field score 12-0 the second half opened with the ball in lehigh's possession pos ner was downed in his tracks by carman here scranton tried a trick three men would mass on the side lines and at a signal from the quarter would charge at full speed for lehigh's line on the first down lehigh was caught off side but on the next line-up threw football orange 2 ; lehigh o on a wet muddy field and in the driving rain lehigh played the strong team of the orange athletic club on the orange oval saturday afternoon and gave them one of the hardest fights they have had this season lehigh's play was a great im provement and all the men seemed to be imbued with the spirit of playing their hardest the field was so slippery that end runs were out of the question and in bucking the line the lehigh backs could not make much ground against the heavy orange line which averaged easily fifteen pounds more per man on the defensive however lehigh showed up very strongly and all of orange's gains were made by simply shoving and her backs were often thrown back for a loss in punting lehigh showed up stronger than orange although no long kicks were made owing to the con dition of the ball the game started about 3.45 p m with orange kicking off le high having won the toss and tak ing advantage of what wind there was bird kicked to lehigh's 25 yard line where keys caught and made 5 yards before being downed lehigh was unable to advance the ball and fitzgerald punted to the middle of the field where okeson fell on the ball it having been fumbled by the orange fullback lehigh was again unable to gain and the ball went to orange on downs then by a series of mass plays orange forced the ball right down to lehigh's 5-yard line where lehigh braced and secured the ball on downs thurston gained 3 yards through the centre and tried the same place again but failed the ball was then passed back to fitzgerald to kick while he was behind the line but several of the orange players broke through and compelled him to the guests of the evening were president drown and pro fessor williams who sat on the right and left respectively of herr 96 president of the society the banquet being well under way mr herr arose and after a few introductory words called upon dr drown who is an honorary member of the society for a few remarks dr drown responded in his usual felicitous manner saying that he was glad to be a member of a society which represented the highest scholarship of the uni versity in closing he said that if he felt need of aid in carrying out any undertaking for the good of the college he was sure that he
