a few members of the club at his home the clubs left lebanon on their car at h 05 o'clock next morning arriving in harrisburg about noojru their headquarters in harrisburg was the bolton house the clubs were welcomed to x harrisburg > by ferriday 96 brady 97 adams 96 and moffit 99 the after noon was spent in sight seeing ar^d continued on third page christmas trip of the glee and banjo clubs on last wednesday the glee and banjo clubs returned from the longest consecutive trip they have ever taken though the distance in mileage was not so great as on some previous trips more con certs were given than ever before and all the way through the trip was most enjoyable viewing the trip from a financial standpoint it was not as successful as could have been wished but though there was a loss it was very small and all ex penses were almost paid the number of men on the trip was smaller than it should have been there being only 22 the others being kept away through examina tions and causes of a private nature hallock 94 went on the trip and his specialty did a great deal to increase the popularity of the con certs the clubs assembled in reading at the central hotel on monday dec 20th in the midst of a dreary rain storm all afternoon was spent in rehearsing so as to be in good form for the concert in the evening the concert was held in the rajah temple a very pretty little hall in which all the social functions of reading are held the audience considering the night was very large and was most ap preciative after the concert the chairs were drawn aside and the carpet taken up and dancing was begun the dance extended into the early morning and was a most njoyable affair it was given to the clubs by the young ladies of read ing who during the entire stay of the clubs in reading did all they could to give them a good time all of the alumni in reading turned out well but special thanks for the success of the concert must be given to mrs hartmann who is very enthusiastic about lehigh and beggs 95 without their aid the concert would undoubtedly have been a failure the special car left reading at 3.25 p m for phoenixville which was reached at 4.80 the clubs were greeted by bossart 96 wag oner 97 and the rev edgar a campbell 90 the clubs pro ceeded at f once to the phenix hotel which was to be their head quarters the concert began promptly at 8 o'clock in the ma sonic hall before a large and select audience the concert was most successful and after it a most de lightful reception was tendered the clubs at the phoenixville club house by the rev mr campbell after the reception vansant 95 gave a little supper in his rooms to a few members of the clubs which was most enjoyable in the morning quite a number of the club went through the various iron works at phoenixville which are most interesting through their entire stay at phoenixville the clubs were treated with the roy lyman evans death has again entered the ranks of the university and taken from our midst one of our number eoy lyman evans of the class of 98 died of consumption at his home in west bethlehem sunday morning dec 29 1895 his last illness was contracted some time resolutions the following preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted by the engineering society of the lehigh university : whereas we have learned with sincere regret of the death of one of our most earnest and con scientious co-workers lewis ben jamin davenport and whereas although this death has come upon us most suddenly and seemingly untimely yet feeling assured that the deep loss to us is but part of an all-wise plan and that god's ways are past finding out we most humbly submit our selves to his will ; therefore be it resolved that in the death of lewis b davenport the engineer ing society has lost a most valuable counsellor an ardent and faithful worker and a sincere friend ; and be it resolved that we appreciating the depth of this loss to the family of the deceased do extend to them our most heartfelt sympathies in their great affliction ; at the same time ex pecting to return when he grew stronger but his disease never per mitted him to again enter upon his studies mr evans was born in logan la may 24 1876 and was there fore nineteen years of age gradu ating from nazareth hall in june 1892 he entered the preparatory school of albert g rau and after completing a course there he passed creditable examinations and was admitted to the freshman class of the university without a condition in 1894 the funeral services were held at his late residence the interment being made in nisky hill ceme tery although not long in college roy evans by his genial nature made himself many friends who will regret much to learn of his sad death during his long illness he was constantly attended by the members of his fraternity the chi psi and at their hands received every attention possible all of which helped him to pass pleas antly his last days upon earth a meeting of the 96 epitome board will be held at the phi gamma delta house wednesday evening january 15 at 7.30 o'clock d w wilson jr pres there will be a meeting of the architectural club on wednesday at 12:30 for the purpose of electing a secretary to succeed weigner 98 r resigned the regular monthly meeting of the junior class will be held iru christmas hall on wednesday jan 15 at 12:30 p m important business to be transacted president lewis b davenport it is with the deepest regret we record the untimely death of one of our fellow students lewis b davenport 96 who was drowned on monday last while skating at lake eowland near baltimore mr davenport together with his sister and a party of friends in cluding eden 96 resolved to go to the lake on a skating trip on monday morning the party left cjnion depot at 10.20 and as soon as they got out of the train at lake station on the northern central railway put on their skates and proceeded across the lake after skating back and forth for a little while a game of catcher was proposed the party scattered and while mr davenport and one of the young men were engaged in a chase the ice gave way and mr davenport went under the other members of the party immediately skated towards him and messrs maurice lagenby and eden got as near to the edge as possible one of the ladies had a shawl in her hand which she threw to mr lagenby who in turn threw it to mr davenport he caught hold of it and held on for about a minute when he let go probably overcome by the cold at the same time the ice broke under mr langenby and mr eden and it was only with great difficulty that they were rescued very much exhausted finding their efforts to save mr davenport in vain the party re turned to baltimore and notified mr.davenport's father by telegraph the body was found by the lake officials about 5 o'clock in the after noon and was sent to baltimore the funeral took place on wed nesday and was attended by a com mittee of the senior class mr davenport was twenty-one years old he graduated from the baltimore city college in june 1893 with high honors and in the fall of the same year entered the class of 96 at the beginning of the sophomore year he was a con scientious student and took a lead ing rank in his class by his dili gence he soon won the esteem of his teachers and fellow-students he was a prominent member of the l u g a tau beta pi engi neering society and the mathemat ical club he was a true college man and many may profit by the example he set he will be missed by both faculty and teachers who deeply mourn his loss utmost kindness and were most sorry to leave the special car left for lebanon at 10.49 a m r . which destination was reached at about one o'clock c w lord 96 was on hand to meet the clubs and guided them to t,he lebanon valley house where they stopped during their stay in lebanon the concert was given in the evening at the sons of america hall before a rather small r but appreciative audience after the concert lord 96 entertained
