gymnasium crowded beyond capacity at pep gath ering friday evening lehigh defeated in annual classic by single touchdown after bitter struggle on rain soaked gridiron defeat brown and white first year men by two touchdowns in game played in steady downpour large number of students present and stirring speeches make affair best ever held heavy maroon line is deciding factor brown & white unable to stop whirlwind attack of maroon in opening minutes of play lehigh forced way twice within five-yard line but was unable to pierce lafayette line . songs help increase spirit stirring speeches given lehigh made heroic stand in third period on goal-line most things start with a bang but the lehigh-lafayette fresh man football game which was played saturday morning at ten o'clock on taylor field started with a splash in an unrelent ing down pour of cold rain a good sized cheering corps watch ed the stubborn contest as it swayed back and forth across the mud-buried field and urged on unrecognizable brown and white players as they fiercely endeavored to stay the lafay ette march this defeat gave the class of 1928 its first per sonal cause for loving lafay ette as a brother captain hand won the toss and mccoy kicked off to the frosh who were defending the west goal the ball was return ed to the fifteen yard line two line plunges netted five yards on the third line-up captain frat conference to hold meeting national organization will hold session in new york this week-end to discuss many topics the third annual pep lun cheon was held thursday noon in the commons if the num ber of students who attended and the spirit shown is indica tive of success this affair was by far the most successful one held since they were inaugurat ed two years ago there were between seven and eight hun dred students present who filled every available space the speeches were cut short because of the limited time but what they lacked in length they more than made up for in spirit and pep to further liven up things there were several pieces played by the orchestra and practical ly all of the most popular songs were sung al bayles presi dent of the arcadia was chair man of the meeting and suc ceeded in keeping things moving throughout the entire hour and a quarter the first man to speak was president charles r richards he told briefly how times had changed since he was in college and how he considered that such rivalry as exists between lehigh and lafayette was a great thing he also expressea his personal enthusiasm which had risen to a high degree the next two speakers were lehigh graduates who have done much for their alma mat er since their graduation pat pazetti who has been of much assistance to jim baldwin in coaching the brown and white team then spoke a few words on the effect that a lafayette game has on him and urged the student body to show the players that they were behind them by cheering continuously through out the game he also urged every student to be present at the freshman game on satur day morning dave petty then added a few more words telling the students that the re sult depended as much on them as on the eleven men on the field the last speaker was bos ey reiter who brought the meeting to a close with one of his stirring speeches his short but snappy talk which ended with an appropriate piece of po etry did much to raise the spir it one notch further although it was almost at the breaking point when he began as is the usual custom the meeting ended with the singing of the alma mater the interfraternity confer ence which has done much to promote the development of the american college fraternity sys tem will hold its next meeting at the hotel pennsylvania new york on the friday and sat urday following thanksgiving day much active work of im portance has been accomplished during the past year and it is expected that the reports of of ficers and committees will bring forward many interesting and helpful suggestions as a basis for an inspiring session new committees of the year include those upon fraternity ideals chapter house architecture sur vey of colleges and need of ex pansion in addition to the reg ular sessions attended by dele gates from the more than 50 general fraternities holding membership in the conferences special sessions are being ar ranged for representatives of undergraduate interfraternity councils the interlocal confer ence professional fraternity in terorganizations and for deans and other representatives of the colleges each meeting of the conference in recent years has marked a forward step in inter fraternity progress and it is certain that the meeting of this year will be no exception . hand broke lose for a 65-yard rush around riglt tackle this was the only spectacular play made by the lehigh first-year men and it placed the ball on the fifteen-yard line five yards were added in two more line plunges then hill lafayette right half back intercepted mullan ey's forward pass and broke up lehigh's first serious jab at the goal lafayette took the ball on her own ten-yard line line bucks were attempted but fail ed to register gains after a five-yard off-side penalty bell lafayette quarterback punted to hand in mid-field who ran the ball back to the thirty-yard line lehigh came within inch es of a first down but a fifteen yard penalty for holding wiped out this advantage here lehign punted the ball and it was re turned to the lafayette forty yard line then lafayette made two first downs with bell and patrecca carrying the ball part of this gain was nulified by fifteen-yard holding penalty which forced bell to punt to the brown and white mullaney received the punt fumbled and recovered it on his own twenty yard line without attempting to pene trate the lafayette line mullan ey punted fifty yards just as the period ended hill broke loose through tackle and in four plays covered thirty yards at the opening of the second period he advanced the ball to the lehigh forty yard line hill and petrecca made a fourth first down on the thirty yard line though petrecca could not gain hill broke loose for eight yards more and wright fumbled when bumped but received on lehigh's four yard line though the first line buck failed wright hit center just making a first down on the three-yard line on the second play wright took it over after a line buck gained half the dis tance petrecca's placement kick hit the center bar the rest of the period was nothing more than an exchange of punts with lafayette holding the ball on their own sixteen-yard line as the half ended lehigh received the ball at the opening of the second half and launched an attack which forced lafayette to yield forty yards and grant three first downs before they could be stop ped mullaney tore off five yards at tackle hand added three more at the end and maher plunged through center for the initial first down of the half the second came when mullaney added the needed yard after hand had carried the ball eight con on page 4 col 4 notice with this issue the brown and white suspends publica tion until friday december 5 the three-yard line where he was downed in his tracks by an avalanche of mud coated lafay ette players with but two yards to go and four downs to make it in a lehigh score seem ed inevitable especially with levitz cracking that lafayette on saturday a spirit of faith was worked into the tremendous enthusiasm of the stirring rally hundreds of students and alumni jammed into the gymnasium filling every available inch of space includ ing the entire floor and balcony the music of the evening was furnished by the lehigh six or chestra after a voluminous cheer for the team and while the crowds were still pouring in the first speaker of the evening was hii troduced who was pat reil ly in the characteristic fash ion which has made him a fix ture at this annual occasion he expressed the hopeful spirit of the evening jim baldwin was the next man to take the floor and he stated that it was thought best not to have the team at the smoker he gave a few words urging the students to give the team all the encour agement possible and also told that the men were ready for the game every man being in tip top form dave petty spoke a few words which were directed especially to the freshmen giving their team encouragement and urging them to start the day off right pat pazzetti all-american quarterback and lehigh's great est football player expressed his personal feeling on the eve of a lafayette game he said that we should not be satisfied with a moral victory but should go down there determined to bring home a full-fledged victory he asked the students to start off the day by having every man at tend the freshman game art cusick the freshman coach and former captain of the brown and white told how he felt in 1922 after lafayette had been held until the final moments when they succeeded in kicking a field goal for the lone tally he said he knew the disappoint ment of losing a lafayette game and did not want the team to feel the same way on the next day he seconded pat paz zetti's request for the support of the student body at the fresh man game in the morning he predicted a hard fight with the frosh doing their share of the scrapping walter okeson the next speaker gave a few figures of past lehigh-lafayette games and other interesting facts of con on page 4 col 3 a determined and irresistible drive of 50 yards by lafayette in the opening minutes of play gave the maroon rivals their sixth consecutive victory over the brown and white saturday by the score of 7-0 y it began raining friday night and on saturday at 2 o'clock the light rain of the morning had turned to a steady downpour march field was a mass of mud and water — water covering some parts of the field to a depth of two inches looking at the field it was hard to con ceive playing football on it weather — rainy soggy and dreary did not dampen the in terest in the game to any ex tent the somewhat archaic wooden stands were rather well filled the rousing yells and cheers roared with spontaneous ness and spirit that was indica tive of intense enthusiasm cre ated by this memorable occa sion blotches of bright colors from the many hued oilskins were noticeable within the field but a dull gray harmonizing with the bleak day made the bright patches all the more out standing and striking after the first rush both teams were mud-streaked and wet clear through it was re markable to see the skill with which both teams handled the pigskin the proverbial greas ed pig was easy to hold in com parison with that slimy mud coated ball from the opening whistle until the end of the game it was a case of slip slide splash both teams played ex cellent football considering the weather prior hess and ernst all got their punts off well get ting both height and distance the lehigh team made a fight that only a lehigh team can make in the face of adversity the light lehigh line with its still lighter fast running and cutting backs were compelled to face overwhelming odds against the heavy maroon line and field which cut speed down to a slide from 5 to 10 yards the bril liant attack which coach jim baldwin has been perfecting and saving for this game was useless last saturday it is a difficult task to pick any out standing stars in that game for it was a team of eleven fighting men but even with it all two men stood out for lehigh cap tain poss greer and ted burke both playing their last contest for the brown and white had little equal on the field time after time when a mud-covered lafayette back would break through the line it was poss who brought him to earth with a deadly tackle this one game alone marks greer as one of the best defensive backs in the country he was every where cheering and encourag ing his team burke may well be called the wizard of the pass his catching of that long pass from mellinger was remarkable it was burke whose alertness gave lehigh one of her chances to score in the first period when he tore down on marsh scoop ed the fumbled punt and raced to the 5-yard line where he was forced out of bounds by crate burke has been picked by many experts who have seen him play as one of the fastest and best ends in the east it would be no surprise to any lehigh man to see ted get ail-american mention if not on one of the teams shortly after the opening kickoff chicknoski went over the lehigh line for a touchdown captain berry kicked the goal which gave the maroon its 7-0 advantage chicknoski and marsh were the leading figures in this fierce 50-yard offensive virtually all the plays were di rected at the lighter lehigh line and the combination of the rain soaked field the heavy maroon line and the fast heavy charg ing backs was too much for hu man flesh to withstand it is doubtful whether any team in the country could have stopped that rush so fierce and power ful was it lehigh had two chances to score one in the first period when burke scoop ed a fumbled punt by marsh and raced 45-yards to the five-yard line where he was forced out of bounds by crate with the ball on the five-yard line and four downs in which to make it the chances seemed excellent for a touchdown but four cracks at that massive maroon line net ted but one yard and ernst punted out of danger in the waning moments of the game with the score 7-0 against them lehigh drove to lafayette's 16 yard line on the next play mellinger threw a beautiful pass to burke who caught it on
