the regular meeting of the mathematical club was held in the physical laboratory on tuesday night mr underwood 97 read a paper on " singular solutions of differential equations to resolve a differential equation consists in finding a relation between variables and constants this rela tion is called a primitive and the differential equation can be deduced from it either by differentiation or elimination of constants a singu lar solution is a solution of a differ ential equation which does not in clude the arbitrary constant c the expression which vanishes when two roots of a differential equation are equal is called the discriminant and the method of finding it is to differentiate the primitive with re spect to c and then eliminate c between the resultant and the origi nal equation the speaker then gave the conditions necessary to render a singular solution and also the exceptions there can be no singular solution to an equation of the first degree and first order for 0 will disappear when we differ entiate the speaker gave an ex ample of an equation the singular solution being a circle while the primitive was a series of lines tangent to the circle he stated the theory and showed that the primitive was not always necessary in singular solutions but it may be determined from the differential equation in concluding his paper mr underwood made numerous appli cations of the theory of singular solutions the paper showed that the speaker had studied his subject carefully and all the various points were made clear the paper was accepted by the club and mr un derwood elected to membership mr hess announced that mr mora 96 would probably read at the next meeting a paper on the universal integrator the ma chine has been used by professor klein in making difficult integra tions mr mora has spent consid erable time on the subject having translated it from the french it will doubtless prove interesting to all on motion the meeting ad journed dancing class the last dancing class of the series of three that have been ar ranged this winter by a committee of college men was held last tues day evening at the eagle hotel it was in all respects a most en joyable dance being larger than either of the two that preceded it dancing began at 9 o'clock and with a short intermission for sup per at 12 o'clock lasted until half past two the music was furnish ed by euhe's allentown orchestra the committee to whose ef forts the success of the three dan ces is due is composed as follows : h w baldwin 96 w c dick erman 96 c v ferriday 96 v a johnson 96 c f scott 97 and e c thurston 96 committee on sports at the last meeting of the com mittee on sports the question of sending a team to represent lehigh in the relay races which are to occur in philadelphia during april was fully discussed the race is a quadruple one including besides lehigh cornell columbia and lafayette the committee finally decided to accept the invita tion of the university of pennsyl vania provisionally and to imme diately start the best men in training for the event it is a good opportunity for lehigh to show what she can do in that line of sports and in case she should win it would bring her name into decided prominence before a large number of people on the other hand it would not be advisable to enter a team which would be easily defeated and would in no way be to the honor of the college the committee therefore earn estly desires that all men who have any ability in this line should come and try for it the track at rittersville where the training will be done is very good and that should be no draw-back the committee will adopt fixed standards of time and if they are equalled the way they should be the committee will then definitely accept the invitation junior german the junior german was not held before easter this year on account of being unable to obtain a con venient date but it will be held on the first friday after easter the day before tne mustard and cheese performance the committee have already begun work and the dance will undoubtedly be one of the most successful ones of the season the picture of the brown and
