the east — lafayette formerly contender for mythical title old rivals have enviable records lafayette capt 1924 charles berry lehigh captain 1924 w c poss greer smoker will add finishing touches many fmiliar speakers sche duled to talk at the big gathering tonight extra features lafayette opened her 1924 grdiron season on september 27th just one week before the lehigh team was scheduled to meet her first opponent as in previous years the muhlenberg team opposed the maroon team and lost by a 13-0 score this score however is no indication of the relative strength of the two teams as it was the initial game for both and the torrid weather prevented good foot ball from being played by either team the following saturday however saw both lafayette and lehigh in action lafayette travelled out to pittsburg and defeated tthe old rivals by a 10 0 score lafayette showed great strength in this game and predictions were being made that lafayette would have one of the best teams in the east le high in her first game downed season so far coach mccrack en seems entirely confident of a victory and made public a no tice in which he promised to have the team upon the field on saturday in their best physical and mental capacity which seems a rash promise indeed the lehigh team which has remained at home for the week has had severe scrimmage on monday tuesday and thurs day defensive work was held on wednesday and a light signal practice will be the orders for today coach baldwin has the team on edge for the fight and all seem to be in very fine con dition with the possible excep tion with the possible excep tion of several injured men cannon has been in uniform and participated in the later scrimmages hayes is back af ter a severe internal injury and con on page 4 col 6 mccracken's first crack at lehigh jim baldwin active as head-coach new football mentor for the maroon and white has continued jock suther land's good work has piloted brown and white team to great things in past three years charlie berry is a senior this year and has played his four years of collegiate football with the maroon aggregation ber ry matriculated at phillipsburg high school starring on the gridiron during his high school career from the very first charlie displayed exceptional prowess on the chalked turf playing his position of right end most bril liantly on offense and defense in fact so well did he acquit him self that he was walter camp's selection for all-american end during his second year at lafay ette last year captain berry seemed to hit a slump but re vived himself this season and is playing whirl-wind ball chuch is equally as brilliant n baseball playing the receiving end of the battery through four years of the diamond sport the lafayette captain is twenty-one years of age and weighs 181 pounds poss is a product of wood bury n j high school where he played fullback and distin guished himself by earning the mythical berth of all state full back of new jersey greer is about five foot ten inches in height and weighs slightly over 180 pounds he is constantly in strenuous training and consequently in the best physical trim ample attest is in the fact that not once in poss " four year's of college football was he removed from a game or unable to participate due to injuries in his varsity work with the brown and white eleven the villanova tilt last saturday was the only game that he did not start this was not through any fault of captain greer however for he was merely obeying coach baldwin's instructions the latter playing his reserve squad to save the first string men for tomorow's classic in addition to football poss is interested in lacrosse earn ing his letter in that sport in 1923 honey lewin lehigh's flashy scorer for the brown and white was tendered a re ception at the unity league last week by a number of his jewish friends of the city it is the educated toe of lewin that has kept lehigh in the ranks of the undefeated this season he will long be remembered as the boy who kicked the field goal which tied holy cross and as the backfield flash who scored all of the thirteen points that tied one of the best teams in the history of rutgers the lafayette eleven is going into the fray saturday for the first time under coach mc cracken's supervision for the past five years they have come out on the long end of the score dr sutherland has directed them in about three of these at tempts however coach mc cracken has proved to be a very capable coach in his three years at this task and he will put forth every effort to have his team come out victorious herbert mccracken is a pro duct of pitt and the famous panther coach pop warner in fact he was one of the greatest players ever produced at pitt being equally good in every po sition in 1919 he showed this ability by playing fullback against perm halfback in the w & j game while against state he played guard tackle and end he was graduated in 1921 before becoming coach at la fayette this fall mccracken served at allegheny college in pennsylvania during the sea sons of 1922-23 the first year his team won six of their nine con on page 4 col 5 gettysburg 13-0 in a rather loosely played game hobart college was lafayette's next victim and was swamped under a 30-0 score lehigh travelled down to princeton where they met the tiger in his liar the brown and white team displayed a brand of football that amazed the country and incidentaly al most defeated the tigers a scant few inches saved the princeton team from defeat while the lehigh defense was never penetrated farther than the 20-yard line the follow ing week lafayette continued her winning streak and piled up a 21-3 score against the buck nell eleven lehigh in a loose game defeated the warriors of dickinson by a score of 15-6 la fayette traveled to new york where they met the undefeated washington and jefferson team however the maroon attack was too much for the presidents and they were sent back under the score of 20-6 lehigh played by far her best game of the season when she tied the strong rutgers eleven the rutgers team was all set to trounce the brown and white squad after having defeated cornell 10-0 the previous week lewin proved to be the hero of the fray having scored all of our 13 points single handed by vir tue of his two field goals and touchdown and point after touch down hazel the all-american star of the big scarlet team was the outstanding player for the visitors and was directly respon sible for all of their points la fayette's next tilt was with the undefeated perm team and al though the easton team out played outkicked and outrushed the perm team it lost by the scant margin of three points the final score being 6-3 lehigh continued to keep her slate clean by defeating her old rival muhlenberg 5-0 it was a hard fought game and only lewin's dropkick in the fourth quarter put the game on ice for the brown and white warriors the next game on lafayette's schedule with rutgers was look ed upon with watchful eyes by all rooters of lehigh lehigh had tied rutgers now just what would lafayette do with them the final outcome was a crush ing defeat of lafayette with the all-powerful hazel doing most of the ground gaining for the scarlet team the final score was 43 to 7 the worst beating lafayette has taken for many years lehigh travelled up to holy cross where they were held to a 3-3 tie by the strong new eng land team lewin's drop-kick con on page 4 col 4 the beat lafayette spirit will reach its height on friday night when the student body and the supporters of lehigh get together for the biggest corn cob pipe festival of the year the smoker to be held at tay lor gym will be the most en thusiastic demonstration of stu dent spirit in years for the brown and white team will go to easton as one of the unde feated teams of the east and one one of the strongest and best drilled elevens that lehigh has even sent against the leopards to stir up this beat lafay ette spirit to the highest pos sible pitch the arcadia has ar ranged a large and very in teresting program the lehigh band will play as it has during the past years while the lehigh criterions are scheduled for several musical numbers also beside this instrumental music the yo-eddie quartet has been engaged to give the students some vocal selections the wrestling matches will be an attraction of the evening and will give the students an opportunity to see the frosh grapplers the big features will be the speeches by alumni and lehigh supporters pat con on page 4 col 5 with the third annual lehigh lafayette game in which jim baldwin has been active as coach just a few days off the activities of this grid mentor are naturally of interest to le high as well as to the support 1 ers of the maroon the first at tempt of jim to defeat this an cient rival from easton showed up his ability as a coach le high fought every minute of the game and only lost by a scant three points this was in the face of a previous season record that seemed overwhelming for the lafayette team was one of the best in the east last year too the maroon team turned the tide but it was an intense strug gle all the way and their driving power was due to a weight ad vantage the results of this year look more encouraging and coach baldwin has had a chance to build up a team which has remained undefeated thus far although every other game on the schedule has resulted in a tie the team is in condition and will fight for baldwin in order to keep their record clean as well as his coach baldwin began his ca reer as coach at somerville high con on page 4 col 6 with the two rival teams primed for the colossal struggle and pulling at the leash in de sire for action and the student bodies keyed up to high tension the two ancient rivals remain in anticipation of the morrow the tedious preliminaries have passed the long wait is over and one short day separates us from fate and another memorable game in brief the brown and white hordes are in motion and about to rush upon their saga cious enemies the distribution of the seats has been accomplished the pep luncheon has passed into history and the great and fitting calumination of the campus feeling is about to occur the great and satisfying pre-lafay ette smoker will be held tonight after an inspiring smoker the parade will form and will en lighten the town as to how le high feels about it all the ob ject of this agitation is to in spire the team which has been doing its utmost to uphold the traditions of the university and the confidence of the student body and the faculty the eleven has passed through a rigorous season triumphantly in order to put forth its utmost in this one memorable game the rest of the season with its trials and hardships had passed and this week has been a telling one in spite of the previous prepara tion it is up to them to battle with the morale and assistance of everyone else urging them forward in the fray upon it rest the hopes and prayers of every loyal person upon the campus of lehigh university the lafayette team has spent a week of the most intense work possible in preparation for the game wednesday afternoon the squad of thirty men under the guidance of coach mccrack en left easton for stroudsburg two workouts a day have been held on the stroudsburg fair grounds the frigid tempera ture there in the poconos has been a handicap to the extensive work layed out for the team but they are making the best of it the change in atmosphere and environments has helped not a little in the reconstruction of the team after the fatal game with rutgers the lafayette team appeared to be on the rocks but by strenuous action the coach has apparently made whole again the remnants that offered so little opposition to the big rutgers combination the only absence that is visible in the lafayette machine is that of moore who was injured in the rutgers game he has been in uniform but probably will not be fit to start the game to-mor row outside of this one case it will be the same lafayette team that has gone through the brown and white vol xxxiii no 20 beat
