classic with lafayette less than a week off one naturally turns to the rec ord of the team which the brown and white journies down the river to meet the easton team staged a comeback when they easily defeated the alfred college eleven by a 47 to 0 score their line-up received a consid erable shakeup aftfer the rutgers game when the maroon and white was defeated for the sec ond time this season and as a result several second and third string men played in the game however the number of sub stitutions was very great and the coaches had a good oppor tunity to get a line on the best combinations for the backfield the work of marsh chicknoski and millman was very consis tent and everyone was satisfied that the leopards would be back to their early season form which enabled them to defeat pitt w and j and bucknell by next saturday thus a very hard battle can be looked for as lafayette will fight to the finish to lessen the stings of her de feats and lehigh will strive just as hard to keep her record spot less for the season and to break the string of defeats suffered for the past five years the civil engineering so ciety held a very interesting meeting in the physics lecture room on thursday evening the speaker of the meeting was mr walter voigtlander an engin eer for the american cable company the meeting was di vided into two parts the first being two reels of motion pic tures on the manufacture of the cable for the delaware river bridge the second part was an open discussion in which the speaker answered the questions asked him by those present concerning the bridge and es pecially on the cable work the first reel of the pictures illustrated the various steps and processes in the manufacture of cable it begins with unloading of the ore from the cars and followed through the furnaces and thence to the rolling and coiling mills after it is coiled it is worked old which includes the various steps in drawing winding and reducing in smaller dies it is then heat treated and galvanized and passes through several tests and inspectors the second reel was mostly of the method of stringing the cables several pictures were shown of the oenstruction of the temporary foot bridges which will be taken down after the cables are place after the showing of the pictures was fin ished some very interesting questions were asked by the stu dents and the professors burr issues them a prey to the prowess of swarthraore saturday they defeated the brown and white by the score of three to nothing the game was played at swarthmore on a field covered with water and snow and was one in the series of the pennsylvania intercolle giate state soccer league the soccer team is still under difficulties from the loss of fer nandez and further crippled by the loss of frey played their best under insurmountable ob stacles the field being in such terrible condition from adverse weather made the play uncer tain throughout the game play ers making efforts to get the ball under control slipped when run ning and it was impossible to be sure of anything - the ball was so slippery that the halfbacks were sometimes even unable io throw the ball in from the side lines without having it slip from their hands such was the con dition of the field and it was a veritable mud-hole throughout the first half the dall traversed the dripping field neither side scoring the ina blity of the players to maintain their footing was very discour aging to them and many errors were made which were really unavoidable because of that fact the swarthmore defense tightened up however at the opening of the second half and the line likewise assumed the at tack and made the brown and white booters hustle to avoid being swamped captain bart lett the center forward of the garnet team scored the first goal when he dribbled the ball down an open field and placed a neat shot in the corner of the net within a very few min utes of the first tally the same player added another to the score of his team efforts were unavailing and the garnet team was rewarded by a victory how ever in view of the fact that the game was played under the most difficult weather conditions and that the lehigh team has a fumble accounted for the visi tor's tally although with the regular line-up on the field lehigh could have piled up a larger score everybody was satisfied with the victory and glad that the scrubs who have been scrim maging faithfully during the season and who in a large mea sure are responsible for tho good record of the varsity team this season had the chance at last to get into a regular game though the game was hotly con tested the lehigh team came through without suffering from injuries as was the case last year in the alfred game hud dled closely on the player's bench to keep out of the pene trating cold the varsity men closely watched the game ready to go in and save lehigh's un defeated record if the occasion demanded however with the exception of prior littell le vitz and dietrich they were not called upon to step out on the gridiron the backfield composed of prior at quarter morgan and davis at half and levitz at full worked smoothly and the inter ference given to the men with the ball ran with ease and pre cision that would have done the varsity credit the line prov ed to be exceptionally strong and only a few times could vil lanova gain through there with any consistency though lehigh made twelve first downs to vil lanova's four two of which were made on penalties the brown and white lacked the power to score as much as their playing ability would indicate ment of the game though the alertness of the forwards of the brown and white broke up many of them notwithstand 1 ing that the visitors completed more than half to the twenty one tries with one colleges entered the meet was won by coach h a bruce's strong union team his men displaying again the re markable team-work that mark ed their victory over lehigh the week previous in a duel meet held at schenectady n y the victory of union was all the mere important when it is taken into consideration that team is composed entirely of men who are experiencing their first year of cross-country run ning this is the first year in seven years that union has been represented in the hill and dale sport this years champions wrested the championship title from rutgers who had been in pos session of it for the last several years the scarlet team had to be content this time with a close second place being 3 points behind union's 46 while lehigh and lafayette fought it out for thrrd place the latter winning by eleven points over the 89 garnered by the brown and white muhlenberg finish ed with an even 100 points and new york university follow ing in sixth place with 103 swarthmore had but one entry and dickinson two their men therefore not counting in the team scoring burdette lewis an individ ual from swarthmore carried off the individual title after an impressive race in which he proved himself the best of a field of forty-six harriers represent ing eight institutions holding membership in the association playing the part of pursuer in the early stages of the race but proceeding over the course at a pace which kept him within striking distance of the leaders lewis spurted to the front shortly after the half way mark and led over the clos ing two miles he won by a mar gin of about forty yards over al fonso west of lafayette who dogged the heels of the victor over the final stages of the race paul farnham another la fayette runner was third and then came c e johnson first union runner over the line and c e brennan the first of rut ger's scarlet-clad harriers home lewis finished in 32 minutes 31 seconds nine seconds ahead of west . siegmund barba and askin were the outstanding lehigh ! men finishing for team count in , 9th 11th and 12th places re > spectively i the order of finish follows : 1 b lewis swarthmore 1 32 31 1 2 a west lafayette 32:40 the outlook for the lehigh burr is very favorable for this year so far the circula tion manager reports an in crease of two hundred per cent over the circulation of last year at this time although this a very substan tial gain it still does not come up to the expectations of the circulating manager johnnie unkles a great many of the fraternity houses have a low percentage of subscriptions it is time these men snapped out of the rut and gave a helping hand to the college gloom chaser within the next few days re presentatives of the magazine will make a round of the differ ent houses and try for a few more subscriptions it is hop ed that the delinquent houses will help these men and give them all the cooperation that they can and try to make up for the lost time the circula tion department is trying to reach everybody and it is up to the men to do their part this year the circulation has i con on page 3 col 1 the lehigh freshmen romped to a spectacular victory over the powerful allentown prep team saturday afternoon when the combinations clashed on tay lor field before the varsity game was called the two teams were more nearly matched in the science of football than the final score of 34-7 would indi cate the contest was one thrill after another and kept the hand ful of spectators constantly on their feet ever anticipating the unexpected twice the unexpected did hap pen and in both cases the break favored the midget brown and white team the first time came early in the third period when adams allentown fullback heaved a forward pass to lane who just touched the flying ball and allowed it to fall into the waiting arms of the on-rushing burke frosh halfback who hur ried it 35 yards to a touchdown no man on the field was able to equal burkes pace he liter ally ran away from every pos sible allentown tackier the second and even more spectacular play was made by hand speedy and brilliant frosh quarterback who took allentown's kick-off just after the visitors had made their lone score from his own goal posts to a touchdown his run of 97 yards through a broken field and with only slight interfer ence is the record of the season for taylor field this play wa.s the first after allentown pushed the ball over for her touchdown and came when she looked most formidable by straight football tactics short passes and line bucking the frosh scored early in the first period quarterback hand carried the ball across in an off tackle play which netted the last five yards the try for point however failed so the score for the half stood at 6-0 altho three times the freshmen were within allentown's five-yard line early in the third period ma her frosh fullback accounted for the second touchdown after hand and mullaney tallied first downs in pushing the ball to al lentown's goal burke drop kicked for the point when al lentown next received the ball she attempted the forward pass which burke turned into a touch down for lehigh lehigh thgn kicked to adams powerful allentown fullback who tore his way thru a scattered lehigh defensive for thirty yards before hand the last bar to a touchdown dropped him another long run by adams gave the visitors an other first down they then successfully executed three for ward passes advancing the ball to lehigh's 15-yard line here maher intercepted but lehigh con on page 3 col 3 applications this year for tickets for the lafayette-lehigh football game have several times exceeded the number of seats which have been allotted to the lehigh section and as a result many applicants were turned away disappointed mr petri kin graduate manager and mr okeson secretary of the alum ni association and a staff of as sistants have been working night and day in an effort to dis tribute ' the limited number of tickets in the fairest manner possible the total seating capacity of the lafayette field is 14,000 and of these 6,550 have been turned over to lehigh these seats have been divided into first and second choice sections and since 4,000 of lehigh's seats are along the side of the field between the goal posts all first choice seats will also be in this section the majority will fall in the north stands back of
