96 memorial the class of 96 has subscribed sufficient money to build a mem orial to the university in the shape of granite steps at the vine street entrance to the campus the cost of the steps will be about three hundred and fifty dollars which sum is subscribed as class dues in amounts of about four dollars per man the contract has already been let and every effort will be made to have the work completed as soon as possible there will be five steps eight feet wide with side posts and buttresses all in barre granite and offsetting these will be rubble wing walls extending out seven feet on a side in general the design will har monize with the library steps and with the 87 memorial steps perry traftord of the harvard athletic committee has suggested that a board of arbitration be ap pointed to consist of neutral col leges the duty of which shall be to impartially decide the various foot ball disputes which may arise be tween the different colleges oxford university has an annual income of 6,000,000 lacrosse lehigh 4 ; harvard 1 between three and four hundred people saw lehigh defeat harvard one of her old-time rivals in la crosse the assemblage comprised prominent persons of the bethle hems a few students from lafay ette and over 200 lehigh men that they were more than pleased with the game was shown by their intense enthusiasm it was especially interesting not only from the fact that we were playing harvard but also that the result of the game would serve as a comparison of our strength with that of johns hopkins harvard having tied the latter team on saturday monday's game was the first with harvard since 89 at which time harvard withdrew from the inter-collegiate asso ciation two previous games were played one in 88 won by har vard ; the other in 89 won by lehigh the ball was faced off at 4.10 o'clock lehigh defending the east ern goal it was soon brought near lehigh's goal but williams received it and made a long throw putting it out of harm's way it was brought back starr tried for goal which was neatly stopped by pennington the ball was then passed down the field baldwin caught passed to bartles who threw a goal from a very difficult angle scoring le high's first point five minutes after playing began soon after the ball was faced off roundey tried for a goal which was stopped by sands the ball was again passed to bartles who by some clever dodging went in passed to koundey who failed to shoot goal the ball was passed back and forward both boyt and williams getting in some long throws l was finally caught by burley who tried but shot wide of goal it was then passed in front of lehigh's goal a scrim mage followed and starr batted in a goal for harvard time 20 minutes baldwin tried again but hit the goal post shortly afterwards leighton was cut over the eye in a scrimmage thus giving the teams a ten minutes rest up to this time harvard had been playing a very hard and fast game but then she seemed to fall oft in her former dash and vigor while lehigh improved from the time the game was renewed to the end of the half a number of trials were made and lehigh succeeded in getting one between the posts the ball was passed by bartles to koundey and by him to shriver who threw the goal time 38 minutes about one minute before the end of the half beecher tried but it was stopped by pennington continued on third page baseball yorkers only making four hits all of them singles in the eighth in ning lehigh took a batting streak and aided by errors succeeded in placing eleven runs to their credit with only one man out but as the new yorkers had to catch an early train the game was called and the score went back to the end of the seventh inning the team was considerably changed about and the change seemed to work well senior went to second w grace taking his place at first carman replaced snyder at third and horner took his place behind the bat e grace went to left field and liiester played at short stop chasmar
