chess club lounging room 8 p.m saturday may 30 — baseball la fayette at easton professor sedgwick's lecture a large audience made up of the faculty the students and prom inent people of the bethlehems listened to the most interesting lec ture of the course given during the present term the lecture germs as friends and foes was delivered by w t sedgwick professor of biology in the massachusetts institute of technology and biologist to the massachusetts state board of health the subject of bacteriology is a very interesting one germs microbes bacteria and micro bartles merriman and baldwin most of which were stopped by lofio shriver then pushed the ball through time 9 minutes 30 seconds score 3-2 stevens got the ball 01 the face off but lehigh soon obtained it lehigh and stevens each made three tries for goal but the playing was almost entirely in stevens ter stevens got the ball on the face off but miller soon returned it when both merriman and boyer made shots for goal which were stopped by lofio the ball went up and down the field very fast when a stevens man tossed it in front of lehigh's goal a scrim mage followed but the ball was gotten from the dangerous position stevens made a shot which was very wild the ball was returned up the field bartles catching it passed to baldwin to bover to roundey who shot a goal score 4-2 time 8 minutes notices the debtors of the supply bureau are urged to make an early settle ment the bureau is supposed to do nothing other than a strictly cash business but for the conven ience of the students credit to quite an account has been given it is hoped that this notice will be suf ficient to cause an immediate settle ment h a wilcox acting manager on wednesday next at 12.30 o'clock in the physical laboratory a special meeting of the class of 98 will be called for the purpose of making epitome nominations electing supply bureau directors and transacting other important business remember no one who is not paid up in his dues to within one month of the meeting will be allowed to vote or be eligible for office let every sophomore come to the meeting prepared to pay up if he has not already done so president lacrosse lehigh 4 stevens 3 three lacrosse championships in four years ! the game on sat urday which decided the champion ship was a very pretty exhibition of the game both teams were evenly matched although dur ing the major part of the game lehigh had the ball in stevens territory the team work of both clubs was fine lehigh doing the better only much of its tipping was wild when their goal was being hard pressed several stevens men would invariably be bunched close in at goal in this way many of lehigh's shots were stopped the pace set from the beginning was very fast and was kept up throughout the game towards the close the play became furious all of lehigh's men played fine lacrosse and it is hard to pick out the players who did the best work penningion in goal made some beautiful stops while enscoe and miller on the defense and bartles merriman and baldwin on the attack distinguished themselves for stevens lofio put up a fine game in goal while brune and weichert probably did the best in the field the spectators were kept in a constant state of excitement and they gave vent to their feelings in cheering and singing the game was called at 3.35 o'clock with lehigh attacking the east goal on the face-off the ball went to enscoe who returned it to the other end of the field the ball was tipped from shriver to merriman to baldwin who shot the first goal in 1 minute 40 seconds when the ball was faced off it went from one end of the field to the other but it was not long before baldwin made another try at goal but missed stevens made a try and the ball again went down the field after 15 minutes play baldwin received the ball from boundey and shot lehigh's second goal on the face off stevens got the ball and it went down the field for a try which went wide baldwin made a try and then the playing became nearer the centre of the field jennings got the ball tipped to weichert who shot a goal time 8 minutes score 2-1 stevens seemed to take a brace and the game became very hard both sides making several tries for goals when jennings received the ball from weichert and shot the second goal for stevens time 15 minutes score 2-2 lehigh now kept the ball in stevens territory until the end of the half several trials having been made by baldwin and boyer after ten minutes rest the ball was again off it went at once to lehigh's attack where eight shots were made in quick succession by agora meeting the regular meeting of the agora was held in christmas hall en friday evening the treasurer reported that if the classes paid their respective dues to the society all debts incurred would be paid the society thought it advisable to have the new room in saucon hall fitted up by commencement week it was resolved that the agora through professor thayer extend a vote of thanks to the gentlemen who kindly presented the silver cups to the representatives of lehigh in the lehigh-lafayette debate a vote of thanks was tendered the gentlemen who so ably repre sented lehigh in the inter-col legiate debate mr shepp was elected to mem bership in the society messrs curtis dunnells chiles shuman pflueger bailey bucher and yellis were proposed for member ship the following men were unani mously elected officers of the society president hood vice president starkey ; secretary treichler ; treasurer meaker ritory the ball went down to stevens attack when weichert after a long run in shot the third goal for stevens time 11 min utes score 4-3 there was but a short time yet to play and stevens worked hard to tie the score stevens made a couple of shots when the ball went up the field boyer making another unsuccessful shot time was called with the ball in lehigh's possession near stevens goal a rush was made for the field and the vic torious players were carried from the field by the students in the evening a celebration was held the men after seeing kirk the trainer on his train parading through the streets and calling upon dr drown professor sedg living things and are as a rule microscopic not all of them are plants and not all are ene mies of ours although it is an im pression that all bacteria are a source of danger and a menace to health it is difficult to conceive of their size but it is estimated that six hundred millions of ' the average bacteria can live in a cubic mil limeter without crowding in structure they are generally long and round and enclosed with a tough cellulose skin they are capable of wonderful reproduction dividing into many sections each of which will form a new growth the form of moulds lead us to the yeast forms these are bene ficial to man not only in the mak ing of bread but it is known that the fermentation in making wine and vinegar is due to wild yeast which acts upon the sweet juices of the grape and apples turning the juices into alcohol and acetic acid after pasteur had established the germ theory of fermentation he found that wild organisms pro duce the zymotic diseases it was shown that the
