opening exercises at 3.30 o'clock yesterday after noon the usual opening exercises were held in the university chapel addresses of welcome were made by bishop rulison president of the board of trustees and dr coppee acting president of the university in the course of his address bishop rulison referred to the presidency of the university urging his hearers not to believe all they hear on this subject but to believe that the board of trustees has entire confi dence in the acting president and saying that the man chosen for president must be a man of clear and broad vision of educated intel lect and first-rate executive ability he added that they hoped before very long to secure such a man for the place the freshman class is a little larger than that of last year 112 having been four of the students handbook published by the chris tian association appeared just after college closed in june and a num ber were distributed during the entrance examinations it was published by haines & worm an -^ allentown in shape the book is the same as number three but sixteen'pages more reading matter have been added making a book ] of sixty-four pages the most4 decided change in the whole book is the cover which is white and slightly heavier than the former one college statistics occupy over half the added space the map has not been changed the one used last year being very satisfactory this little book is very usefuj botli to the new-comers and to the old men and now after four years fa vorable trial may be considered a permanent publication the com mittee on publication was hen shaw 94 warner 94 polhemus 95 wheeler 95 bratton 96 it is said that the university of chicago intends to publish a i magazine similar to the contnryj which will be a rival to that new instructors there will be five new men this year to take the places of instruc tors wendell atticks frye riggs and soli on the two men in the physics department are william f powell m b and edwin e fisher m e respectively of 9o and 9l cornell after graduation mr powell was engaged with the north american construction company installing electric railways and the street railways departments of the general electric company both of which companies failed he was then employed under professor wm a anthony in the mather company of manchester conn as chief of the draughting department and assis tant electrician on the failure of the mather company he was in charge of the photometric depart ment of the waring electric lamp company until the re-organization of the mather company of which he was electrician and superinten dent before coming to lehigh mr fisher after his studies at cornell under professors thurston nichols and ryan was assistant to the engineer upon the reconstruc tion of the railroad of the paterson railway company at paterson n j in 1892-93 he was engaged upon the electrical expert course at the lynn factory of the general electric company and later as elec trician with the union railroad company at providence r i he will have charge of the junior work and mr powell that of the seniors mr s l griswold knox m e of the mechanical department graduated at stevens in 1891 and has since been employed by the camden iron works of camden n j designing and erecting traveling cranes and gas-holders mr l r gibbs b a who will be freshmen instructor in english during mr frye's absence was valedictorian of the class of 92 at wesleyan and comes here highly recommended especially by pro fessor winchester the well known english scholar the football outlook the question which most natur ally arises to the minds of college men at this time is " what are the prospects for a good football team this fall of last year's team five will not be back namely wooden mc clung ordway roderick and floyd this leaves one vacancy on the line and four back of it captain trafton . therefore starts with a good nucleus of old men from which to form a team keys 96 last year's centre will play in the same position this year and should prove oue of the best of the year trafton 96 will be found at his old position — right guard and his playing there needs no comment budd 95 will play right tackle and is a good conscientious player though a trifle slow left tackle will be filled by houston 95 if he returns and his playing also needs no comment okeson 95 and best 95 the two ends will both be back and should have improved greatly by their experience of last year among the most promising can didates fer the line are dick 95 bowie 9s and beccara 98 all three had some experience on the scrub last year and should make the men hustle for whose places they are trying back of the line the most prom ising candidates for quarter back are philips 95 saltzman 96 e thurston 96 and wallace 97 of these saltzman 96 has had the most experience though the others have all played on the scrub for half backs the most promis ing candidates are j thurston 96 gunsolus 97 and harrison 98 of these thurston has had the most experience though the others have both shown themselves to be good men for full back the most promising candidates are dornin 96 senior 97 and gass 98 of these dor nin and senior have both played on the scrub while gass comes from pennington where he played full back on the school team altogether the outlook thus early in the season is fair and the new class may be expected to fur nish several men to the varsity team and to the scrub captain trafton expects to begin practice immediately and to organize the training table early in the season the
