first freshman cabinet formed last week bethlehem pa tuesday november 11 1924 lehigh plays third tie game of season with holy cross vol xxxiii no 15 brown and white had slight edge over purple in gruel ling contest played before record crowd lewin again ties score with field goal organization and duties are modelled after those of upper classmen drive for enrollmnt of more members to take pace this week-end brown and white runners defeated in final dual meet of season brown and white soccer ar tists bow to quakers by 4 to 1 score harriers made fast time notice all students who have not yet registered their address or change of address at the dean's office please do so at once if they wish their names to be printed in the new reg ister visitors show good form mercersburg downs lehigh freshmen the brown and white boot ers were defeated by the junior varsity of the university of pensylvania saturday by a score of 4-1 the game was the sec ond for lehigh in the perm state soccer league and was played on the upper field the score does not indicate the hard fought game that the contest really was although perm came out on the long end of the score their counters were the results of fumbles by the lehigh men it was the speed with which the victors took advantage of the breaks of the game that rolled up their four points twice in a goal post scrimage hawkins allowed the ball to slip past for a score the game started with promptness and dispatch in the first few minutes of play it was evident that the lehigh team would have to reach the height of its ability if they were to defeat the formidable combina tion against whom they were matched in fact it became more evident when the fast and clean playing of the visiting team pushed the lehigh defense back and scored the first goal in a few minutes after the open ing whistle the game was no continued on page 4 col 2 noted engineer here next friday while holy cross counted only five neither could make a sus tained attack that would bring a touchdown perhaps the tyest performance of the game came in the third period when it seemed as if le high would sweep the purple into oblivion starting the play on their own 20-yard line after the kickoff lehigh literally tore the purple defense to pieces mellinger levitz hess and greer smashed through for gain after gain three of lehigh's seven first downs came in qulciv succession the first came to its 35-yard line then lehigh reached the center of the field at this point mellinger threw a forward pass to that expert catcher burke and the ball was down for the third successive first down advance at holy cross 36-yard line another thrust of six yards by hess put the pigskin down on the purple 30-yard line lehigh's advance checked it did not seera possible to halt the attack but holy cross showed its gameness swept back 50 yards without being able to make a stand the purple checked fche advance of lehigh on the next play and for the first time the brown and power the lehigh cross country team lost their final dual meet of the season on saturday when they were defeated by the hill and dale men of union college at schenectady new york the score of the meet was 15 to 40 the runners who represented union presented one of the best balanced combinations that the brown and white runners have run against for a long time contrary to the usual practice the runners did not start out at a fast clip instead the un ion men started at a fairly mod erate pace and maintained vir tually the same pace throughout the run the harriers were pret ty well bunched for the first mile the runners of both teams try ing to get to the fore and hold this position after this how ever the first three union men to finish began to slowly leave the rest of the runners and lead the way these three men john son kaplan and boettcher had things practically their own way for the remainder of the race the lehigh harriers tried hard to stick to their heels but were unable to maintain the guelllng pace set by the home team sieg mund and raine of lehigh fought hard to finish ahead of the fourth and fifth men of un ion and succeeded in holding their own until the home stretch here nadeau and johnson man aged to pass the lehigh men and thus union was able to finish all five scorers before one of the continued on page 4 col 1 first faculty dance a great success the y m c a cabinet held an important meeting thursday night in which several questions were discussed there was not a full attendance because some of the members had already left for holy cross a final drive to enroll more members will be undertaken the latter part of this week by the same men who helped in the pre vious drive an effort will also be made to collect the outstand ing pledges which were signed previously to date there are about six hundred men enrolled which is practically the same number as there were last year since there is a larger enroll ment of students this year it can be reasonably expected that the membership in this organiza tion should show a correspon ing increase another important matter which was taken up was the for mation of a freshman cabinet the five men who have charge of this task were present and held a short meeting after the regular cabinet meeting the freshman cabinet is to be an exact duplicate of that of the upper classmen with these two cabinets acting in conjunction with each other it is expected that the work of the organiza tion will be more thorough since more men can be reached various plans for socials were talked over and it was finally de cided that the best form of so cial would be a stunt night in which each class would furnish a part of the entertainment no definite plans were formulated for this but the committee on entertainment is working on them and they will be presented at the next meeting of the cab inet which will be held in about two weeks brown and white displays strong defense against all teams the first freshman cabinet is now a reality and as a result of the election of officers the fol lowing men were elected : vaug han vive-president l smith treasurer and delaplaine sec retary avery president of the freshman class becomes presi dent of the cabinet by virtue ot his office the officers together with the nominating committee met with the secretary of the y m c a and appointed the chairmen of the various commit tees of the cabinet the chairmen of the commit tees are chairman of membership clayton chairman of publicity gil more chairman of entertainment heller chairman of social service pitman chairman of handbook fearnside chairman of bible study helm ; chairman of meetings j r smith chairman of industrial kel logg chairman of foreign stu dents lang chairman of church rela tions blllmeyer chairman of missionary becker the above cabinet is modelled directly after the senior cab inet and is a very valuable or ganization in as much it will tend to bring the freshman in to closer relation with work of | the y m c a it is valuable in another way for it will devel op leadership among the under classmen and some men with great ability will be discovered before they reach their senior jyear season's initial affair of this kind enjoyed by thirty members students addressed by english bishop blue and white aerial attack bewilders frosh in second half first half hard fought the lehigh frosh football team journeyed to mercersburg saturday afternqon and were defeated by the score of 34-0 in a game in which mercersburg had all of the breaks and none of the hard luck this contest was the academy's big game of the season twenty-four men made the trip yesterday and twenty-four men participated in the game mercersburg scored chiefly on its aerial attack in the second half having been able to score only seven points in the first two periods of the gamt lehigh was unable to gain con sistently through mercersburg's line the blue and white ben efitted greatly from the many penalties incurred by the lehigh first year men lehigh kicked off to mercers burg on their ten-yard line and the ball was worked back to their forty-yard line where they fumbled and miller of lehigh recovered the ball the browii and white then rushed the ball down to the mercersburg five yard line on plays by burke mullaney and maher and a for ward pass was then thrown to mullaney who was brought down over the goal line but the referees claimed that the pass was incompleted and the ball was brought out to the twenty yard line they then punted on the frosh and hand who was receiving the punt fumbled and mercersburg recovered they continued on page 4 col 4 senior class book committee meets yearlings start practice for bas ketball team hear interesting talk on his tory and ideals of oxford university tentative schedule includes many hard games various phases of the work assigned to different mem bers of committee speaker well qualified material wanted immediately with two remaining games on the schedule lehigh still looks back on an undefeated season a season which has not been one of actual victories — and it is granted but moral victories yes saturday lafayette went down in defeat at the hands of rut gers with a score of 43-7 the saturday previous perm trounc ed lafayette to the tune of 6-3 while comparative scores mean nothing and the basis of all pre dictions should be made from seeing a team in action it may be said that lehigh proved itseh a powerful team on the defense against princeton and rutgers and all other opponents faced this season also a team that has an offensive which in flash es has displayed power equal to that of the defense the battle against the arch ri vals lafayette will be one of the features of the football year and should be worth traveling many miles to witness it wilt bring into competition a grid iron machine of tremendous power and a fast team which has mastered the forward pass — a team which is resourceful courageous and well fortified with splendid kickers for a third time this season lehigh's fighting football team was tied but a record of no de feats still stands intact before a record crowd of more than 12,000 persons including about 200 lehigh rooters holy cross held the brown and white grid men to a 3-3 tie the game was played at mt st james in wor cester and marked the dedica tion of a new stadium the two teams were very evenly matched as is shown clearly by the sta tistics a strong wind drove down the field throughout the entire game making aerial at tacks perilous and playing hav oc with the accuracy of punts and drop kicks holy cross was the first to score in the opening period holy cross made two successive first downs and eight yards of another with two to go on the fourth down with the ball on the 11-yard line lowrey fell back and sent a perfect kick over the cross bar < lehigh tied the score in the second period lewin booting the ball a short punt against the northwest wind gave le high the ball on holy cross 45 yard line lehigh opened an ir resistible attack which included a forward pass from mellinger to burke chalk line after chalk line was crossed until le high was inside the five-yard line lehigh ties score one attempt to rush it over was stopped the lehigh men be ing piled up in a heap on tne same line from which they started lehigh took no furth er chances a shout notified the officials that a substitution was to be made and as the game was halted lewin came running to ward the group pulling the jaws traps of his helmet under his chin as he ran lehigh's crack punter hess who had replaced the starting quarterback prior trotted off the field and play was resumed there was but one play when the bail was snapped back it fell into lewin's waiting hands not 15 yards distant from the goal line and directly in front of the posts lewin made a perfect drop kick and lehigh had placed itself on even terms with holy cross for the balance of the game the ball went back and forth neither having a chance to score until the closing seconds when one came holy cross way only to get into the discard with so many neglected football opportunities it was the greatest game of football seen on fitton field this year and one of the greatest ev er piayed on that or any other field the gallant holy cross men outweighed by the famous brown and white of lehigh rose to the topmost height and played the game of their lives it was a stubborn contest on ly seven times during the game did liiehigh make first down a call for candidates for the freshman basket ball team has been issued and thirty-six men turned out for practice in tay lor gymnasium coach bartlett has been dril ling the candidates every night this week in the fundamentals of basketball and much atten tion has been devoted to shoot ing practice the freshmen will play a se ries of three games with the sophomores before december 13 coach bartlett is organiz ing an ineligible team for the men who have transferred and are unable to play this year be cause of the ruling games will be arranged for them so that they may keep in trim for the competition for a friday evening in the electrical engineering lec ture room mr stephens is connected with the transformer department of the general elec tric company at pittsfield mass his years of work in con nection with the building of large power transformers has developed him into an expert in his line and his wide knowledge of the subject coupled with his intense interest in his work make him a most interesting talker mr stephens will relate some of the early developments in transformer manufacture ana will cary the story up through modern times citing a few of the possibilities of transformers in connection with the latest de velopments in super-power transmission his lecture will be illustrated with lantern slides which will show some of the en prmous units turned out by the general electric company it has been rumored that lu wurster who has charge of re freshments is planning a real treat for this meeting by hav ing sweet cider and ginger bread as head liners for tne menu music with the meal is also promised the exact nature of which has not been disclosed as yet the college lecture of last week had for its speaker his grace the bishop of gloucester the subject of considerable in terest to the student body was some aspects of oxford uni versity and on this theme the lecturer discoursed most effec tively the bishop is a noteworthy scholar and student of church history after completing the regular course at oxford he held a fellowship there at all soul's college for ten years he was principal of king's college london this was followed by a period of five years in which he devoted himself entirely to study he is the author of sev eral noted books principally on theological subjects for the past year he has been a noble lecturer at harvard and has also travelle detxensive continued on page 4 col 3 on friday evening the first of a series of six faculty dances was held in drown hall the affair was very well at tended about thirty members f the faculty with their wives being present the music was furnished by an orchestra com posed of college men under the leadership of mike burlin 4 game the orchestra did very well and were roundly applaud ed after each dance the committee composed of professors frey chairman;'an derson beaver mease turner and lewis had every thing ar ranged before hand and all was run smoothly the dancing started at the scheduled time of ight o'clock and continued un til twelve a short intermis sion was held at ten during which time light refreshments of ice cream cake and coffee were served the absence of both president richards and dean mcconn were noted but many of the old er members of the faculty were present the next dance of thia series is scheduled to tak place on the night of december 12th and will considerable in terest to the student body was some aspects of oxford uni versity and on this theme the lecturer discoursed most effec tively the bishop is a noteworthy scholar and student of church history after completing the regular course at oxford he held a fellowship there at all soul's college for ten years he was principal of king's college london this was followed by a period of five years in which he devoted himself entirely to study he is the author of sev eral noted books principally on theological subjects for the past year he has been a noble lecturer at harvard and has also travelle detxensive continued on page 4 col 3 on friday evening the first of a series of six faculty dances was held in drown hall the affair was very well at tended about thirty members f the faculty with their wives being present the music was furnished by an orchestra com posed of college men under the leadership of mike burlin 4 game the orchestra did very well and were roundly applaud ed after each dance the committee composed of professors frey chairman;'an derson beaver mease turner and lewis had every thing ar ranged before hand and all was run smoothly the dancing started at the scheduled time of ight o'clock and continued un til twelve a short intermis sion was held at ten during which time light refreshments of ice cream cake and coffee were served the absence of both president richards and dean mcconn were noted but many of the old er members of the faculty were present the next dance of thia series is scheduled to tak place on the night of december 12th and will
