monday oct 29 — engineering society physical laboratory 7.30 p m wednesday oct 31 — football lehigh vs university of north carolina athletic grounds 3 p m athletic association christ mas hall 12.30 p m agora meeting christmas hall 7 p m friday nov 2 — classical club dr hyde's office 3.15 p m saturday nov 3 — re-examina tion in sophomore physics physical laboratory 9 a m football lehigh vs u s naval academy annapolis md sunday nov 4 — christian associ ation christmas hall 6.30 p m notices the agora meeting this week will occur on wednesday evening oct 31 at 7 p m it is hoped that the change to an evening hour will enable all members to be pres ent visitors will be cordially welcomed the class of 97 will hold an election to fill the offices of vice president and historian on thurs day november 1 in christmas hall polls open from 12.30 to 1.00 p m there will be a meeting of the l u a a wednesday oct 31 at 12.30 in christmas hall to vote upon the following amendment proposed by the executive com mittee : " the assistant manager of each athletic team of the leliigh university shall succeed to the managership without further elec tion unless objections be filed and substantiated against him on account of inefficiency shown as assistant manager by the college or by the team of which he was assistant manager electrical engineer ing society the regular meeting of the elec trical engineering society held last wednesday was called to order at 7.30 p m by president brown under the order of new business it was decided to change the night of meeting from monday to tuesday in order to accommodate members from the junior class a paper w'a,s read by schwing hammer 95 on the " sperry elec trie brake this included a full description of the brake.and several points in connection with it one interesting fact was particularly emphasized namely that the en ergy which is to be destroyed the momentum of the car becomes the means of its own destruction through the agency of a motor which is run by this momentum and applies the brake to the axle he also explained how the presence of the eddy currents in the mass of the brake collar multiplies many times the power of the brake the first section of an exhaustive treatise on the " theory of alter nating currents was read by blehl 95 this paper makes its appearance at an opportune season since the subject of alternating cur rents will be discussed from time to time throughout the year the reading of the paper will be con tinued at the next meeting this was followed by the eluci dation of a few facts relative to the permeability of steel used in the shafts of dynamos and motors sigison 95 had this subject in charge and showed among other facts that there exists a slight in duction through the armature shaft when the magnetization of the core approaches the point of saturation attention was drawn to that clause in the constitution which states that sophomore e e.s may become associate members after a short discussion on the papers which had been read the session was closed the college republi can the first number of the college republican official organ of the american eepublican league has just appeared it is edited by a board of editors from different col leges prescott warren 96 repre senting harvard the november number contains a picture of presi dent cox and a quantity of news of interest to every member of the league the subscription price is one dollar per year and it is hoped that here where there are so many members of the league a large sub scription list will be secured the second number to be pub lished next month will be a new england number and will have several articles by harvard men — harvard daily news captain knipe of pennsylvania has gone from quarter to half back williams taking his place whom this forces off depends on the work of the remaining men the pennsylvania - princeton game will be played on the state fair grounds at trenton on nov 1 if the grounds seem satisfactory if not the game will be played in philadelphia kicked from their 25-yard line which his rival caught and carried it back to the 30-yard line lehigh was twice given 10 yards for off side and holding but orange secured the ball on four downs and time was called with it on their 15-yard line in the second half orange made a number of changes and phillips for lehigh replaced 0 thurston at quarter gordon caught the kick-off but was downed immedi ately by okeson he soon returned the kick and phillips secured the ball out of bounds de hart was severely hurt but resumed play thurston made 8 yards trafton 10 then tomlinson broke through and tacklexl trafton for a loss of i yards fitzgerald received the ball too late to kick and it went to orange maynard ran 35 yards till tackled by trafton on lehigh's 35 yard line after several gains through the tackles lehigh received the ball for holding and trafton made 4 yards a kick was soon necessary but best downed gordon who caught it gordon then gained 25 yards but trafton tackled tomlin son for a loss of 10 and gordon kicked j thurston falling on the ball on lehigh's 5-yard line traf ton gained 3 and 10 yards then phillips made a poor pass and coyne fell on the ball gordon in two runs made the last touchdown marshall again tailing at goal time 12 minutes score : 14-0 the game then developed into a kicking contest until lehigh secur ed the ball for offside play and trafton made a run of 25 yards houston 3 and trafton again 3 leliigh now kept the ball danger ously near orange's goal but lost it on a forward pass from phillips to trafton and orange broke through the line successively for large gains after a number ot punts joe thurston and trafton each made several good gains but fitzgerald was finally forced to kick may nard caught the ball and secured a free kick which fitzgerald return ed only to have the compliment returned by gordon with this brilliant exhibition of punting time was called with the ball in the centre of the field lehigh's team did not play the game of which it is capable and a number of times orange's heavy line broke through on the backs they did well however tfough in the first half the tan bark which covered lehigh's territory caused much slipping the teams lined up as follows : lehigh orange best left end \ couo ™°™ houston left tackle . . \ ; tison guard oliver i^f c -
