order for hallowe'en which comes on friday night the smoker was a great success in every way and keen interest was aroused in the coming game the affair was the largest held so far this year and great crowds thronged the commons in which the get-to-gether was held the townsmen interested in the college's activities were invited in addition to the stu dent body as an auxiliary at traction boxing matches wrest ling bouts and local entertain ers were on hand to augment the usual speeches from the fa culty and prominent students in short the general impression seemed to be one of beat muh lenberg at any cost however the actual work in preparation for the game h done not in the pep meetings or individual comment but on the field during practice the cardinal and gray team has been priming in earnest af ter a period of rest early in the week up at muhlenberg field coach walter wood has been at work on his charges extending his powers in a great effort to have an invincible combination on the field saturday two men who will bear watching on the muhlenberg team are winnie slemmer and borrell these two are the stellar backfield stars of the team and they are worthy of the praises sung in their honor slemmer gave a wonderful exhibition of kicking on tuesday afternoon the coach had him working on kicks the entire afternoon to the ex clusion of everything else those who witnessed the work pro claim that honey lewin will have an able opponent on satur day when it comes to an edu cated toe it seems that slemmer is a master in punting the honors seem to rest with bor rell in fact he is a real triple threat he outpointed his op ponents in the f and m game last saturday his passing was accurate and several fairly long ones were completed in run ning back punts and broken field running borrell also excells one punt was carried 65 yards by him in the last game coach this saturday afternoon in drown hall immediately after the muhlenberg game a tea dance will be held and it is ex pected that a large crowd will be present the muhlenberg followers who will be at the game in full numbers are ex pected to be on hand for the dance and also as several of the fraternities are running dances this week-end it is expected that the crowd will be increased in this manner none of the reflections cast by last week's affair should be allowed to in fluence anyone and everyone should turn out for this affair the dance committee of the inter-fraternity council wishes to express its regret over the outcome of the tea dance which was to have been held last sat urday in drown hall after the rutgers game due to unavoid able circumstances the orchestra which was to have played last saturday afternoon was un able to do so but the committee promises that this incident will not occur again and that in the future their plans will be car ried out so as to have a season of very successful and enjoyable tea dances admission will be one dollar single or couple and refresh ments will be served the dance will start immediately af ter the game and will last until seven o'clock the beaux arts society held a get-to-gether meet monday evening last in coppee hall this their first meeting was well attended about fifty men being present a business meeting was in progress for a short period dur ing the earlier part of the eve ning this however was of a minor nature and its impor tance was overshadowed by the social and educational side of the program which did much to make the gathreing as en joyable as it was an extemely interesting lec ture was given by professor palmer on a trip through southern germany the lec ture was of vital interest and gave a thorough insight into ex isting conditions the lecture was keenly followed by the men present and was illustrated with slides so that everyone obtain ed both a graphic and word painting of the picturesque country the metallurgy department has secured mr c e un derwood superintendent of the northampton coking plant of the bethlehem steel company to give a lecture on by prod uct coking for the benefit of all students who are interested in engineering mr underwood will speak at eleven o'clock fri day morning in the chemistry lecture room and all students who are concerned with that type of work are invited to at tend the speaker is an authority on the subject as he is one of the biggest men in the country in the coke industry this lecture is part of the program arranged last year by the various departments of the university to bring authorities on the various subjects in the engineering college to address the students who are engaged in that phase of study these talks are really orientation lectures for men in their own fields of work so that they may secure a broader aspect of their pro fession the brown and white har riers traveled to easton on wednesday afternoon and lost a hard fought race to the maroon clad rivals by the score of 22 to 23 the race was run over the mount paxinose course which is about six and three tenths miles in length the runners left the quadrangle at about quarter of four and went down the back road of college hill and contin ued a short distance along the nazareth pike after about a mile on this road the course takes a long winding ascent up mt paxinosa to the very sum mit and thence down the south ern slope of the mountain and through the streets of easton and back to the lafayette cam pus finishing in the midle of the quadrangle at the firing of the gun the runners were off and remained pretty well bunched until the long climb up the mountain when the pace oegan to tell on some of them farnam of lafay ette is a close competitor for the laurels of mercury if the results of the contest is any criterion he came very near to making the course record with a time of 35 minutes and 17 seconds for the six arid three-tenth miles the star harrier of the maroon began to leave the rest of the runners as soon as the nazareth r<?ad was reached and gradual ly increased his lead for the re mainder of the race breaking the tape almost two minutes ahead of his team-mate west who was the second man to fin ish the former completed the run in the remarkable time of 35 minutes and seventeen sec onds barba and siegmund of lehigh who finished fourth and fifth respectively tried to main tain the gruelling pace set by the leaders but after the first part of the race the distance between them and the first two men gradually increased barba and snyder were close throughout the race but the lat ter had a slightly stronger finish which enabled him to cross the mark about a half a minute ahead of the lehigh runner siegmund and askin finished a short distance behind barba the latter was challenged by germantown of lafayette as they rounded
