the agora an unusually interesting meet ing of the agora was held on mon day evening besides the members there were a number of visitors present the general topic of busi ness was the proposed debate with lafayette the committee named at the previous meeting messrs mckenzie and laramy was given full power to act in regard to the necessary arrangements for the de bate in order to encourage to the utmost all those who think of join ing the society a proposition to do away with initiation fees was made and the change will undoubtedly be made at the next meeting the society however will make no at tempt to confine the lafayette de bate to agora men childs 98 was admitted to mem bership and the names of best 95 james 95 buvinger 96 des sauer 96 and thomas 97 were proposed for admission and will be voted upon at the next meeting during the debate of the even ing kautz 95 took the chair the subject was : " resolved that the abolition of war is now practic able messrs siegel 95 and laramy 96 upholding the affirma tive against mckenzie 95 and hess 96 on the negative the decision of the judges messrs boyer 96 bernstein 96 and hood 97 was rendered in favor of the negative the society as a whole taking the same position on the merits of the question the subject for the next de bate to be held monday evening feb 25 is resolved that charity is no sufficient remedy for the problem of poverty it is hoped that the meeting at that time will be even more largely attended and more enthusiastic than any so far known chemical society the senior and junior chemists met in the chemical laboratory on tuesday afternoon to discuss the advisability of reorganizing the chemical society the meeting resulted in the or ganization of a society to be known as the chemical society of lehigh university various resolutions were offered and adopted and after electing the following officers the meeting ad journed : president e v ist wigfall 95 ; vice president j e shero 96 ; secretary and treasurer l a olney 96 junior electrical laboratory the construction work of the juniors this year has consisted prin cipally in the making of thomp son reflecting galvanometers in order to encourage the men to turn out good instruments mr fisher offered a prize to the maker of the best instrument the competition closed several days ago and the prize was won by w £>. jackson who made a four coil high resis tance galvanometer having a figure of merit of 62 x 10 11 , which means that a current of 000,000,000,62 ampere will give a deflection of one millimeter on a scale placed at a distance of one meter from the mirror the suspension consists of an astatic pair of fourteen needles in all and weighs only 449 gram a second prize was awarded to j e weideman and honorable mention was made of bauder cooke given and loomis the jud ges were mr powell and mr clink the epitome and the bkown and white boards were photo graphed yesterday by bggert pennsylvania recently challenged princeton to a dual track and field contest this year but the offer was declined as one meeting with columbia was considered enough lacrosse prospects reviewing our prospects for the coming lacrosse season we are at first apt to think they are very gloomy but this is the ever re curring thought on the opening of a season regardless ot what team we are considering and is prompted by the remembrance of some of our best men who have graduated or left college this year is no exception and the tendency is for one who looks only on the surface to arrive at the same conclusion but soon will a doubt enter his mind if he stops to consider more thoroughly our con dition true we have lost some good men ordway roderick and ilil liard who graduated last year will be missed on the field then too polhemus has not returned and we would all like to see him back in his old position what have we then to counteract these losses ? is a pertinent question and can be answered very readily mac donald 96 who played on the championship team of 93 is back ; fitzgerald and becerra of 98 have played some lacrosse and will probably make two of the de fense as they not only have had some experience but are large men kline bnscoe barker and reid of ' 96 are also likely candi dates for the defense dick and bastress of last year's team have had a great deal of ex perience and should do better than ever before in their positions — point and goal bastress took buel's place last year when the latter was called away and he filled the place admirably keys 96 also intends playing this year and with his weight and speed will probably make some of the old players work hard for their places on the attack hilliard is the only man of last year's team who is not with us massey no doubt will continue in the good work he has been doing for the past two years . kip coleman bartles and s baldwin should improve on their work of last year while crawford 9s sharrer h baldwin and bartholemew of 9(s and merri man and janney of 97 will prob ably develop into good men so that the old men will have to work hard to hold their places other likely candidates are bauder and c ferriday,'96 clinton yates and slade 97 then too there are grass bernard harrison holder ness and a host of others in that unknown quantity 98 who should come out and learn the game in this way only can men be trained to take the places of those who graduate a great many of the men are practicing in the boiler house and the work they are doing there will show up no doubt when the snow leaves the ground keep it up men and let us add university magazine a short article on columbia col lege contains a good picture of the magnificent library to be erected on the new college grounds at 116 th street new york the february issue of the american university magazine appears with its usual number of good articles of interest to lehigh graduates and undergraduates is " the alumni of the lehigh uni versity " by l b sernple 84 this gives a short history of the alumni association followed by accounts of what many of our prom inent alumni have done since grad uation it is illustrated with a half-tone of the campus and pict ures of twenty-three lehigh alumni lehigh university south bethlehem pa february 14 1895 vol 11 no 36 the brown and white calendar thursday feb 14 — engineering society physical laboratory 7.30 p m epitome board phi gamma delta house 7 p m friday feb 15 — classical club dr hyde's office 2 p m concert by glee and banjo clubs at washington 1 c at 8 p m assembly dance sun inn 8.30 p m saturday feb l 6 — concert by glee and banjo clubs at an napolis md at 2 p m examinations in mineralogy metallurgical lecture room at 2 p m sunday feb 17 — communion services chapel at 9-30 a m tuesday feb 19 — electrical en gineering society physical lab oratory 7.30 p m athletics at cornell " the drama at lafayette " con tains illustrations taken from " the new olympus played there two years ago the second article on college customs is by h s fisher on undergraduate customs at princeton a new department ap pears with this issue under the head of " the university world this is to be a record of current events at american colleges it will be kept up by contributions from a member of the faculty in all the prominent colleges lehigh will be repre sented by professor b m hyde cornell's faculty has adopted the following resolutions in regard to intercollegiate athletic contests : resolved that the faculty deems it desirable to limit all inter collegiate football contests as far as feasible to college grounds ; and it is of the opinion that no student who is markedly deficient in his university work should be allowed to play on the university football team it believes further that the number of absences from town should be reduced and reiterates its action of oct 5 1894 viz we do not regard any person as quali fied to be a member of the univer sity team who comes to the univer sity without the intention of re maining at least one year or who receives any remuneration or con sideration of any sort for his ser vices this decision is virtually a vic tory for the advocates of athletics as the contest was on the question whether men should be allowed to leave town for the purpose of par ticipating in inter-collegeiate con tests notices in the matter of mistakes on re ports of standing we are requested to urge those who think their re ports are incorrect to hand them to mr roth when they will be carefully examined and corrected if wrong all men desirous of forming a southern club please meet at the phi gamma delta house saturday at 7 p m the list of undergraduate sub scriptions for last term is posted in packer hall the students are requested to inform the auditing committee of any omissions in this report jas e brooks chairman lacrosse drills in gymnasium mondays and fridays at 5 p m and special practice in boiler house on wednesdays 3 to 5 p m any other time get key from engineer all come out and get into good conditionbefore the outdoor season opens another banner to those of 90 and 93 let each one do his part — if you don't play pay your athletic sub scription at least — and make this season the most successful one for lacrosse that has ever been known here
