it is as yet too early in the sea son to advance any conjectures of value regarding our chances of success on the diamond this spring but the indications for a good team in both fielding and batting par ticularly the latter are favorable the candidates began regular training on monday with the ex ception of the battery candidates who have been working faithfully for several weeks for pitcher there are five candidates namely bowie 95 jackson 97 nevins 97 turner 98 and becerra 98 in this department we will be barring accidents beyond doubt stronger than we have been for several seasons bowie is improv ing gradually he has good speed but as yet has not developed the control that one would like to see little can be said of jackson as his arm is not yet in condition to allow him to do himself justice nevins so far has shown the greatest im provement and he will no doubt uphold the reputation he earned last year he has excellent con trol his speed is good and will probably increase as the weather grows warmer turner and be cerra are uncertain quantities al though both give promise of mak ing good players the former pitched last season for the willi mantic high school the latter is somewhat inexperienced but he handles himself like a ball player behind the bat our prospects are not so bright goss 95 who is the most experienced of the candi dates is a fair backstop and his throwing to bases is swift and accurate but he is weak with the stick turner who intends it is said to give more atten tion i to this position than ditching promises well although he has not had time to show what he can do j s wallace the other candidate has had little experience as a catcher but it is probable he will develope he is a good batsman and base runner it is captain thompson's desire to turn out an especially strong batting team and to this end he will devote considerable effort he is already developing plans to facili tate practice in batting mcclung will probably coach the team and is expected here as soon as field work begins those whe recall his faithful and successful work with the football team last autumn will realize what a factoi towards success his presence will mean tuesday at 8.40 a m the junior m e.s left for the new york shop visit trip twenty-six men composed the party which was in charge of mr heck the stur tevant house was selected as the headquarters in the city and the hours of actual inspection were from 9 a m until 5 p m amongst other places visited were the powei\houses of the broadway cable the navy yard the ball & wood engine company at elizabethport n j and the ma chinery in the basement of the hoffman house the men were without exception treated with the utmost courtesy by the various employes and officials of the places visited thanks being especially due to mr ball of the ball & wood company lieutenant roller of the navy yard the father of koller 94 and mr hirt the chief engineer of the cable road who personally conducted the party over all parts of the buildings of the company and explained the whole of the in tricate system in use the party returned on saturday evening reaching here about 8.30 o'clock dr henry coppee • it is with the deepest sorrow that the bkowjst and white is obliged to record the death of one of the oldest and best loved professors dr henry coppee who died very suddenly at his residence this morn ing about 1.30 o'clock from heart failure dr coppee had been un well for several weeks but never showed symptoms of a kind to warrant fears of his death until yes terday when his condition became more critical and he steadily grew worse until he died born in savannah ga on oct 13 1821 his boyhood was passed in that town he first went to yale entering the class of 1839 where he remained two years after leaving he was engaged in engineering work for three years and in the year 1841 he accepted an appointment to west point,from which institution he graduated in 1845 he served through the mexican war entering as a second lieutenant and coming out as a brevet captain he was then ap pointed principal assistant professor of geography history and ethics at west point serving in that position until the year 1855 when he re signed from the army and became professor of english literature at the university of pennsylvania in the year 1866 the hon asa packer had determined to establish a free institution of learning in the lehigh valley and dr coppee was called to the presidency of this new university as being a man in every way fit for such an onerous under taking under his guidance the lehigh university remained until the year 1875 many were " the obstacles which he encountered in those early days and by their over throw he laid a strong foundation for his successors to build upon in the year 1875 finding the duties of the presidency too onerous he resigned from that office and took the chair of english literature international and constitutional law and the philosophy of history this post he has occupied up to the present time and bow ably every graduate of the lehigh uni versity can testify a year ago last fall he again assumed the duties of president after the death of president lam berton and served as acting president of the university until the time of his death dr coppce's record in other branches of life is also most honor able he has occupied several positions under the government and was when he died one of the regents of the smithsonian insti tute dr coppee has contributed many valuable additions to litera ture and history and has written text books on various subjects he was married in the year 1848 to miss julia de witt and he leaves behind him his wife and live children one son and four daughters committee on sports the committee on sports held a meeting yesterday afternoon in the gymnasium at 3.30 o'clock p m a regular order of business was decided on and several other minor details of the same character at tended to a letter was read from the secre tary of the track athletic associa tion of the university of penn sylvania announcing that a large athletic meeting will be held in philadelphia on saturday april 20 of which the chief feature will be relay races between teams of different colleges a team is to consist of four men each of whom is to run a quarter of a mile lehigh's opponent will be lafay ettte and suitable prizes will be offered the invitation to compete was accepted a committee was ap pointed to attend to selecting mar shals for the coming season tlje question of establishing a baseball league among the fraternities and clubs for the coming spring was then broached the secretary was authorized to correspond with the different fraternities and clubs as to the feasibility of the measure the committee then appointed monday at 11.30 a m as the regular time for its meetings for the remainder of the year it was decided that the banners now in the gymnasium should not be re moved for any purpose owing to the treatment they have thus far received when borrowed for deco rating it was decided that now and in the future the managers of the different teams be requested to hang the pictures of their respective teams in the gymnasium and also any trophies they may have won during the season a committee was appointed to find out how many pictures of past teams were missing and to report as to the best lehigh university south bethlehem pa maiich 21 1895 vol 11 no 46 the brown and white method of securing such pictures for the gyjnnasium there being no further business the meeting adjourned college meeting immediately after the announce ment in chapel of the death of dr coppee the undergraduates ad journed to christmas hall vansant 95 called the meeting to order stating the object was to draw up resolutions upon the death of dr coppee it was moved and carried that a committee consisting of four seniors three juniors two sophomores and one freshmanbe ap pointed to prepare suitable resolu tions the following were appointed : the presidents of the four classes the vice-presidents of the three upper classes ; the secretaries of the two upper classed and the treasurer of the senior class it was moved and carried that a committee be appointed to confer with the fac ulty in order to arrange for the college to do honor to the remains of the deceased 7.30 p m ' y notices ! all those who are trying for the chorus of the mustard and cheese will meet in christmas hall today thursday at 7p m it is neces sary that all should be there w g whildin the banquet of the engineer ing society has been indefinitely postponed as preparations have not yet been completed all college exercises will be sus pended today and on the day of the funeral the time and arrangements for which will be announced later baseball
