the second paper given by palmer 96 solved the problem of describing eight circles tangent to three • given circles modern geometry having a nomenclature peculiar to itself it was necessary to explain certain definitions and establish some fundamental prin ciples involved in the discussion after '■• some introductory proofs had been presented he proceeded to the solution of the main prob lem as stated above in the solu tion of this and similar problems the advantage of the application of modern geometry was made ap parent the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved presi dent hess then announced that professor doolittle had kindly consented to give an informal talk the date and subject of which will be announced later at the next meeting on april » 22 two papers will be given : farman 95 on linear differen tial equations ordinary and par tial ; white 95 on a funda mental problem in mathematical physics junior class meeting the regular monthly meeting of the junior class was held in packer hall on tuesday at 12.30 p m it was unanimously agreed to change the constitution in regard to dues lowering the latter from 75 to 50 cents a month however any who have already paid their dues in full at the rate of 75 cents will be given credit for next year the junior hop then came up for discussion and on motion the presi dent was authorized to appoint a committee of ten to take charge of the matter of the three men hall miller and worstall who were nominated for director of the supply bureau hall received the highest number of votes the fol lowing men were nominated for di rectors of the new christmas hall club room : dutcher wilson d w hall ayars strickler f h baldwin graff ferriday worstall palmer and fountain the first four of the above were elected no further business being brought up the meeting adjourned committee on sports at the meeting of the committee on sports last monday much im portant business was transacted it was decided to invite lafayette to participate in the field sports which will take place may 15 there will be a lacrosse game early in the afternoon and after it the sports will be held it was decided to obtain pictures of all teams ; which have ever represented le high and hang them in the gym nasium the fraternity and club baseball league was brought up and plans were discussed concerning the manner in which it should be man aged several other minor athletic details were arranged such as ad vertising and general supervisions over the games this spring it was also decided to lease the field on saturday april 13 to two professional runners who desire to test each other's prowess there being no further business the meet ing adjourned the resolution of the harvard faculty recommending the aboli tion of football contests was passed by a vote of 26 to 14 when 4 voting members of the faculty were absent sophomore class meet ing the most important meeting of the term was held yesterday in the english room president white presided the reading of the mm utes of the previous meeting was dispensed with the class supper committee then made its report the number present having failed to come up to the number guaranteed the committee found itself in debt a motion was made that the class pay the deficiency after much discus sion this was carried a report bearing on the method and the probable cost of calculus cremation was read by the chair man of the investigating committee the class then proceeded to select the final committee the following motions were made and carried : 1 that the committee consist of seven members 2 that the time for nominations be kept open 5 minutes and that not less than ten be nominated 3 that the seven men having the highest number of votes be de clared elected 4 that the election be held in christmas hall from 11.30 to 1 o'clock friday the men nominated were tschudy senior treichler serrell yates thorn waring seabrook brady smith mac knight elliot hale saltzman ammen hannum merriman shepherd h f brown irwin kennedy good johnson bowers no man being two or more months class dues in arrears will be allowed to vote the class requested that the athletic representative interview all men in regard to organizing a lacrosse team a vote of thanks was given to the athletics of the class for winning the winter sports the class also voted to pay a share in the floral tribute to dr coppee given by the students freshman class meet ing the regular monthly meeting of the freshman class was held on monday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock in packer hall the meeting was called to order by president wood but no minutes were read owing to the absence of the secretary it was moved and carried to elect a secretary pro tern who in case of secretary bowdle's resignation will assume that office for the rest of the term cleary captain of the baseball team resigned and the resignation of manager lukens was announced by president wood their resignations were accepted nominations were then made for baseball manager and captain sec retary pro tern and two men for the board of directors of the supply bureau arrison chairman of the committee on canes reported showing three samples one of them was chosen unanimously by the class president wood urged the members to pay their dues as the class has several unpaid bills on hand it was moved and sec onded that the motion for giving the sophomores free beer be recon sidered after some discussion it was decided to withdraw the offer to the sophomores the question of maintaining a lacrosse team arose but was voted down after casting the ballots is was found the following were elected : baseball manager shepp ; captain kiehl : secretary pro tern webster ; board of directors for the supply bureau agora the regular meeting of the agora on monday evening was rendered interesting by the fact that the subject of the lafayette vs lehigh debate was the one debated the attendance was good and considerable interest was mani fested throughout the debate ; the speakers receiving applause ac cording to their success after reading the minutes the business of the meeting was taken up the men nominated at the last meeting were elected by ac clamation and others nominated : merriman 97 birch wooden and starkey,'9b the debate followed besoived that u s senators should be elected by a direct popular vote four men defended each side ; for the negative mckenzie 95 ar benz 95 eeid 96 and lambert 95 the critic was farman while instructors heck evans and gibbs served as judges after the re buttal arguments by the leaders brown and mckenzie the judge retired but soon returned with their decision in favor of the negative after remarks by the critic a vote was taken upon the best debaters which resulted in the following order : thurston mckenzie ayres and brown a general discussion was then held by the entire meet ing upon the side of the questiont best suited to lehigh in the de bate with lafayette this general debate ended in a vote for the negative lehigh will therefore on may 24 defend the negative side of the question arrison and perley adjournment followed the mathematical club the regular meeting of the mathematical club was held in the physical laboratory on last monday evening the first paper was read by hall 96 on " anharmonic katio after a few statements concerning the use of this ratio in geometrical investi gation and its importance in a num ber of treatises on conic sections it was shown what is meant by the anharmonic ratio of four points in a straight line the number of ratios and the relation existing between them this ratio was then used in demonstrating two classes of theorems in one of which certain points were shown to lie in the same straight line and in the other certain straight lines were shown to meet in the same point
