nineteen junior civils accom panied by instructor wilcox left south bethlehem on friday after noon for athens pa the trip was for the purpose of inspecting the union bridge company's works at the above place instructor wilcox and one or two of the men stayed over night at athens but the remainder of the party went on to waverly n v a few miles beyond where better hotel accom mo dations could be secured after spending a decidedly enjoyablee veil ing all hands reported at the bridge works the next morning they were kindly shown through the entire plant by messrs a 11 maurice 93 and a s maurice 93 and the various operations were carefully and thoroughly ex plained the party is much in debted to the above gentlemen for their courtesy and hospitality the party left athens at 1:20 p my arriving in south bethlehem at 6:30 p m all agreed in voting the trip the most pleasant and suc cessful which they had thus far taken *.—,. — , . it is reported that chase of dartmouth the champion hurdler of the world has broken his ankle state oratorical con test the third annual contest of the pennsylvania inter-collegiate ora torical union was held in the opera house at lancaster on friday last lehigh lafayette svvarthmore franklin and marshall gettysburg and muhlenberg each sent a con testant the judges ex attorney general ilensel judge mcpherson and lion 11 m north were unanimous in awarding the prizes as follows : first prize t levan bickel franklin and marshall subject napoleon ; second prize miss emma s hutchinson swarth more subject the modern order of the eound table third prize harry neff herr lehigh subject socialism and modern reform lacrosse lehigh 4 crescents 3 lehigh s lacrosse team played its first game and won its first victory on saturday a steady ram fell throughout the contest and pre vented a large attendance tbe crescent team arrives late and it is 4.05 before the ball is faced off from the very start our men show their skill at the game and it is a very few seconds before crawford obtains the ball and passes it to bartles the latter makes the first try of the game for goal but misses but crescent is there to play also and in a few minutes they try for goal here bastress makes his first clear stop and the ball soon goes down the field massey receives it from baldwin and with a short shot puts it through the posts for the first goal of the game and for lehigh too score : lehigh 1 crescent 0 time 5 minutes of play the ball is faced off and cres cent works hard to win a point their attack obtains the lead and forces the ball towards goal a mass collects in front of post the ball is tossed in the air a crescent stick strikes it and crescent scores a point this is just one-half min ute after the last goal score : lehigh 1 ; crescent 1 with the score tied and both teams warmed down to work the play becomes fast and hard our attack is quick and by good playing they advance toward goal coleman shoots but misses and directly after that massey shoots but it is too high he follows the ball up well and after considerable skirmishing and passing by our attack coleman gets it and passes to baldwin who shoots goal score : lehigh 2 crescent 1 ;
