hit,advancing thompson to second senior hit hard to right scoring thompson petri kin going to third bowie hit to second scoring petri kin but forcing senior out at sec ond whitmoyer hit over the centrefield fence for four bases gannon struck out nevins got first on an error by blakely goss ended the inning by going out on a fly to second score 8-5 in the sixth for pennsylvania blakeley made a hit contrell made a hit advancing blakeley to third gorman went to first hit by a pitched ball brennan went out on a fly to whitmoyer blake ley scoring on the out dickson struck out hollister got his base on balls avil hit to thompson who fumbled the ball contrell scoring schoenhut made a hit to right bringing in gorman hollister and avil whitmoyer ended the inning by making a pretty catch o a fly from goeckel this ended the scoring for both in the ninth a hit would have tied the score after thompson went out on a fly to schoenhut petrikin made a clean hit over short senior made a hit to right bowie made a pretty sacrifice ad vancing petrikin and senior a bag each whitmoyer was then called upon for a hit but he was not equal to the emergency ending the game by striking out following is the score : lehigh university of pennsylvania score by innings earned runs lehigh 7 u of p 4 two base hits schoenhut contrell three-base hits whitmoyer home runs whitmoyer schoenhut goss thompson bowie blake ley sacrifice hit bowie double plays thompson petrikin senior struck out by nevins 10 by dickson 8 base on balls by nevins 5 passed balls goss 1 time of game 1.50 umpire mr beattie * avil out third strike bunted foul eckley b coxe in the sudden death of the hon eckley b ooxe last monday morn ing the university lost one of her staunchest friends and most influ ential trustees about two weeks ago he was attacked with a severe case of rheumatism coupled with a heavy cold this turned into pneumonia and the skill of the physicians was baffled he gradually grew worse until the end came at 10.25 o'clock monday morning he was born in philadel phia june 4 1839 and his early training was in that city mr coxe graduated from the university of pennsylvania in june 1858 and later completed a scientific course of study in the bcole des mines in paris and at the famous mining school of frei burg in saxony eeturning to this country mr coxe in connection with his brother began in 1865 the mining of anthracite coal in the upper lehigh field no one understood the scientific application of mining and protecting the underground world better than mr coxe his practical and scientific knowledge has long been accepted authority in coal-field developments he was president of the american in stitute of mining engineers from 1878 to 1880 and was also an active member of the american society of coal engineers he was a lecturer on scientific subjects and in 1872 published a translation of weisbach's mechanics of engi neering and construction of min ing in 1881 he was elected to the state senate and served a full term in 1882 mr coxe's name was pre sented to the democratic guber natorial convention but after a few ballots he threw his support to mr pattison since his retirement from the senate mr coxe has devoted him selt to his coal interests nothing could induce him to return to politics his coal properties at gowen derringer and beaver meadow are only second to his collieries at drifton and freeland the value of them is not known but an estimate places them at 18,000,000 mr coxe took especial pride in making drifton a model coal town and in this he has succeeded be : yond any expectation he built : the great cross creek hall the drifton hospital the handsome episcopal church a stone building that has few equals anywhere and the many blocks of dwellings in which the miners live mr coxe leaves a widow but no children the funeral will be held in drifton this afternoon at 1.30 o'clock as a mark of re spect college exercises are sus pended today glee and banjo clubs meeting at the meeting of the glee and banjo clubs last monday evening the following important business was transacted : a financial report was read and accepted miller 96 was then elected secretary of the clubs for the ensuirig year and j w thurston 96 was re-elected business manager for next year there was con siderable discussion about an as sistant business manager for next year it was decided to postpone the election until the next meeting which will beheld sometime be fore the end of the term mr wolle will give one of his deservedly popular organ recitals this evening in the chapel at 8 o'clock mr wolle has a well earned reputation as a fine organist and those of the students who ap preciate good music should make it a point to be present tickets can be obtained in bethlehem at klose's and in south bethlehem at jacoby's and those wishing to attend should secure them in good season as none will be sold at the doors baseball lehigh 8 ;
