undergraduate reso lutions at a special meeting of the un dergraduates of the lehigh uni versity on may 15 1895 the fol lowing resolutions were unani mously adopted : whereas the undergraduates of lehigh university have learned with profound sorrow and regret of the death of hon eckley b coxe for many years a trustee of the university and her firm friend ; therefore be it eesolved that we the students of lehigh university appreciate the loss it has sustained and tender to his family our sincere condo lences eesolved that a copy of these resolutions be engrossed and sent to the family and that they be pub lished in the college papers seo'y of the committee around the campus a very important meeting of the agora will be held on monday evening may 20 at which time the election of officers for the ensuing year will take place prof merriman and mr t m eynon 81 are on the committee for the examination of applicants for chief of water bureau of philadelphia the freshman chemists and electricals are doing extra work in the chemical laboratory the ex amination will be on june 1 and the laboratory will be closed im mediately afterward up to the 15th only two men had finished work the track team had its picture taken on saturday following are the officers of the mustard and cheese dramatic as sociation for the ensuing year : president g p bartholomew 96 ; secretary and treasurer e t bel den 96 ; business manager h w baldwin 96 ; stage manager w o okeson 95 an advisory alumni committee consisting of messrs hillman pyle and booth was also elected nevins has pitched the whole or part of almost every game played thus far . at a meeting of the track team , on saturday v w kline 9 6 was elected captain for the ensuing year on friday the following men were elected officers of the christ mas hall committee : hall 96 president ; yates 97 vice-presi dent george 98 secretary dutcher 96 treasurer organ recital on thursday evening last in the university chapel mr wolle gave one of his delightful organ recitals to a very large and appre ciative audience if those who went expected to hear the works of the masters as interpeted by an artist they were not disappointed for from the first note struck until the end he held the audience spell bound the programme consisted of selections from bach widor wagner liheinberger and thiele and admitted of a wonderful variety of expression and execu tion from the delicate harmony of eheinberger's pastorale to the massive grandeur of the death march from die gotterdammerung the last was transcribed from wagner's opera by mr wolle himself and is one of the finest specimens of representative wag nerian music with its wonderful bass effects and the complicated minor chords that run through it the selections from widor were the andante cantabile from the fourth organ symphony and the scherzo from the second they represent widely different styles of expression but it is when interpreting bach that mr wolle is at his best and the eight numbers from this composer's works that were played during the evening were perhaps the best appreciated of all they included preludes in a and g fugues in d and g minor aria in f aria in a minor and the two chorales " herzlich thut mich verlangen and alle menschen miissen sterben this last was perhaps the most beautiful of all and when the last note died away the silence of the audience testified far better than any applause the appreciation it met with , the finale in a flat by thiele gave ample scope for the wonder ful execution of the musician and the magnificent powers of the organ and made a fitting termina tion to what was veritably an evening with the masters engineering society the meeting of the engineering society scheduled for thursday was for unavoidable reasons held wednesday evening the new provison for dividing the society into sections was passed the section of the constitution defining a quorum as one fourth the active members was changed to one fifth the reports of the outgoing officers were presented and ac cepted following this came the election of officers the contest being very spirited the new officers are president cunning there are still eighteen caps and igowns at the supply bureau which have not yet been called for faculty resolutions the following minute was pre pared by a committee of the faculty of lehigh university appointed for that purpose at a special meet ing held tuesday afternoon : the faculty desires to express its pro found sense of the great loss which the university has suffered in the death of the honorable eckley b coxe who has been associated with the university almost from its origin as a member of the board of trustees . having himself received a liberal educa tion and having pursued his technical engi neering studies in some of the most promi nent schools of europe ; having subsequently acquired a large experience in practical engineering in the development of the mineral resources of this state mr coxe was eminently fitted to be a wise and effi cient administrator of the affairs of this institution generous broad minded arid public spirited he spared neither himself nor his purse in his efforts to promote the efficiency of the university by his wise counsels by his liberality in throwing open his private scientific library to professor and student by his generous donations and above all by his cordial and kindly presence in reunions of teachers and students — both lehigh university south bethlehem pa may 20 1895 supplement vol 11 ham 96 ; vice-president dessauer 96 ; secretary enscoe 96 ; treas urer bliem 96 in the 0 b section the following officers were elected : chairman herr 96 ; sec retary and treasurer enscoe 96 in the m e section : chairman buvinger ; secretary and treas urer bromer 96 nominations were then made for three vacancies on the lehigh engineer board the men receiving the highest number of votes were given 96 herr 96 and bayard 96 and they were declared elected on motion the society adjourned for the annual treat by the incoming and outgoing officers the non officers also treated the officers agora meeting a meeting of the agora was held in christmas hall on monday evening may 13 the amendment offered at the previous meeting providing for the separate office of treasurer was passed the ques tions discussed were : first ee solved that hygenic homes for the working classes should be guaranteed by the government second resolved that the ques tion of public sanitation is of more importance to our present day civilization than is the question of civilization the society voted in the negative on the merits of both questions nominations of officers for the ensuing year were made as follows : president laramy 96 vice-president reid 96 herr 96 randall 97 ; secre tary w s jackson 96 h00d,'97 thurston 96 ; treasurer hess 98 starkey 98 a motion was made and carried that the nominations be left open for one week public aud private — he proved himself ever a friend and patron of the university whose loss is irreparable the death of mr coxe closes a period of private experimental engineering that has no parallel in any country of ample fvr . tune and with unlimited abilities for r >- search he devoted large sums to the solu tion of problems of public utility and freely gave the results to the world these afforded to this institution a high grade of practical studies : as mr coxe not only knew how to perform good work and had examples of the highest excellence to offer but he freely allowed the university to incorporate them in its courses beyond and above what has been said the example shown by mr coxe in his life is worth far more than ample fortune or exceptional abilities with him there was no debatable ground between right and wrong so that his example and the fre quent talks to students were invaluable in showing the dangers in professional life and the destruction of high standards of integrity from a failure to tell the whole truth or by suppressing defects ; so that his hearers felt that here was a man above price ; a man who would not hesitate to tell an unpleasant truth ; a man who could be implicitly trusted to his friends the character of unquestionable integrity which he illustrated will be one of their most cherished memories signed b w frazieb e h williams jr j f klein w a robinson committee funeral of hon eck ley b coxe the brown and white the funeral of the lion eckley b coxe was held in the episcopal church near his residence in drif ton at 1.30 p m thursday the simple but impressive service of that church was read and at its close the body was laid in a grave not many yards distant from the building the small church was filled when the relatives and friends from a distance had been seated and the throng outside numbered thou sands in the chancel were a large number of floral tributes beautiful in design and bearing words which expressed the sincere esteem and respect in which mr coxe was held by those who knew him best the casket was borne to its last resting place by his neighbors in drifton and the services and ar rangements were all marked by that simplicity which was charac teristic of the man in life the university was represented by its board of trustees president and faculty the officers of the four classes and a delegation of the delta phi fraternity of which the deceased was a member this party together with a great many business friends of mr coxe in cluding the best known business men of the lehigh valley reached drifton by a special train leaving bethlehem at 10.50 a m and re turning at 4.40 p m in drifton all business was suspended many buildings were draped and the general air of sad ness in the town showed how real was the grief of the people and how keenly his loss is felt in the community
