since registration should report their present addresses at the deans office immediately the new directory is nearly ready to go to the printer and cor rections of addresses which do not come in within the next two or three days will be too late to be embodied 7 m mcconn dean lehigh frosh down rutgers yearlings brown and white first year men outplay scarlet and win by 13-6 score much improvement shown the young men's christian association of lehigh univer sity began its annual member ship drive on monday evening october 20 the purpose of this arive is to get all the students to become members of the y m j a the funds obtained through the membership lees will be de voted to the upkeep of the y m 0 a and to aiding in every pos sible way all the students of the university especially those whose resources are limited this organization has been xuund to be invaluable in the past and under the able leader snip of mr fred trafford the new secretary it should be even more so during the present year fhe'y m c a although a reli gious organization is absolutely non-sectarian and is devoted to the promotion of the welfare of the youth of our nation it is sincerely hoped that all the stu dents of the university will do their share toward helping this membership drive the members of the campaign committee had dinner at the commons on monday evening at six o'clock the head of the committee mr george keogler has charge of the drive and with the help of the committee and the students will do his best to make it a success after the din ner the drive was officially open ed and the campaign for new members began if the students will come forward and cooperate with the y m c a in this drive they will be doing their share in the campaign for a bet ter lehigh students urged to help self-aid more men should take ad vantage of discounts of fered by cooperative as sociation list of members given at the arcadia meeting last jlhursaay several matters of in terest were brought up owing to the absence of bayies mr aoegier presided action was uuken on the matter mr palmer brought up the question of tne disposal of the unity or iorty dollars leit over iruin tne money appropriated to vie uauu it was suggested that me money be used to heip de fray tne expense oi sending the uanu to iioiy oross jno ueunite a dance to be heid tne night ueiore tne itutgexs game was consiuered unpractical because vi tne several iraternity dances which will be neid on tnat date xur urury stated however thai mere wouid be smokers ueiure cue kutgers and laiayette games capt greer and mr pazetti mentioned tne pressing need lot good scrub material and askea mat eacn fraternity representa tive urge every eligible man in ais house to support the team a law suggested by mr wil iiams that in luture all arcadia representatives be seniors was unanimously adopted tne matter of a cheer-leader competition was then discussed the lack of good material here nas been commented upon by the student body rather openly at games and it was therefore de cided to hold a competition for cheerleaders open only to jun iors the present ones are to be given another chance however the motion was carried the question of the best m&s ner of selecting the frosh team managers was then opened to debate it was decided to ob tain advice from other colleges and to select the best suggestion mr williams also requested a competition for lacrosse team managers a question was introduced which has been the subject of much discussion since the foot ball season started this is the free admission of the bethlehem police to the games without going into the pros and cons of the question now it is merely necessary to say that a motion was carried unanimously which should request the graduate manager to comply with the wishes of the student body and the arcadia in this matter mr koegler requested that all arcadia fees be brought to the next meeting and the assembly was adjourned at daybreak saturday it seem ed certain that football weather was surely here but by noon it was again warm which meant that it would be very hard for the team and it would have a ten aency to slow up the game the game was called at two-thirty captains greer and roth and one of the officials held a confer ence out in the middle of the field lehigh won the toss-up and captain greer c hose the east goal through all of the previous seasons certain games have been off games and a sigh of re lief was heard after the game with the added remark now that is out of their system practically the entire game lehigh resorted to straight foot dall and the second period gay lewin good drop-kicking prac tice though it took several at tempts before he was able to lo cate the goal posts prior did most of the punting for lehigti and got off a few long ones isurke played his usual consis tent game and many of the loss es by the visitors were due to his penetrating into the b;ickfield and nailing his man stephens hayes and hess played a good game but were not up to iheir usual standard for dickinson carpenter and fred rupp starred these men alternating with p rupp work ed the double pass delayed pass and reverse pass to a perfection that fooled the lehigh defense time after time and enabled the visitors to pile up eight first downs before lehigh could stop the invasion the first touchdown came af ter a well placed punt by prior which gave dickinson the ball on her own three-yard line c rupp punted but cannon blocked the kick and dietrich recovered it one the next play hayes crossed the last line for a touchdown the attempt at a try-for-point was blocked the second le high touchdown came after an exchange of punts which gave her the ball on dickinson's for ty-four yard line a long well executed forward pass by mel linger to greer enabled the lat ter to add six points to the score mellinger kicked the goal but the point was not allowed because the lehigh team was off-side continued on page 4 col 1 dickinson made her only score after dickinson had rushed the ball from the forty-yard line to the eleven-yard mark here the red and white lost the ball on downs and prior attempted to punt out of danger the punt was poor and after hitting hoff man fell into the hands of bais who scooped up the pigskin and rushed to the three-yard line where prior tackled him for three downs the lehigh line gave only a yard on the fourth down white carrying the ball spied a hole on the left side of the le high line dashed through and made the touchdown books at tempt for point hit the cross bar so the score stood 15-6 in le the meeting of the beaux arts club scheduled for thurs day evening october 23rd has been postponed to monday evening october 27th as the sun sank behind the taylor field stadium saturday afternoon the brown and white machine the students and fol lowers of lehigh realized that the team representing dickinsoi college was a troupe of hard fighters full of grit and deter mination it was in the middle of the last quarter that lehigh awoke to the fact that if it want ed to win it would have to buck le down to hard work although winning by a fifteen to six score the over confident brown and white gridiron war riors were outplayed for the greater part of the game by the plucky dickinson eleven the team which was held to a tie score by a strong princeton elev en was unable to fathom the mysteries of the double pass and its variations as was practiced by the carlisle pigskin artists lehigh had five first downs to the visitors eight and all save one of these five came in the clos ing minutes of the game when the brown and white launched an aerial attack which might have netted them another touch down but for the final whistle the brown and white organ ization made a very fine start scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter after the opening period lehigh did not seem to be able to work as one man as it did in last week's contest with princeton it was not until the latter part of the last quarter that lehigh regained the old fighting spirit for which it is noted the dickinson team fought like trojans and in the beginning of the fourth quarter its efforts were awarded by a touchdown the red and white has the honor of being the first team to score on lehigh this year and it is justly proud of it five thousand or more enthu siastic football fans watched the game dickinson brought with them about three hundred stu dents and adherents of the red and white team friday night and saturday morning colle giate fords came squeaking into bethlehem filled with hap pily singing and yelling dickin sonians many of the students who were not lucky enough to come in a machine tied up their clothes in a red bandanna han kerchcief and marched down the road depending on some kind traveler to come along and pick them up friday night the dick inson team stayed at the berk shire in reading and came on to bethlehem saturday morning before the game lehigh and dickinson exchanged cheers ana there was a great show of spirit on both sides of the field prov ision was made this week for certain sections of the stadium to be reserved for the student body therefore allowing more or ganized cheering the band marching over the field and then coming to a halt in front of the brown and white stands looked and sounded very fine the band seems to improve every week and if it keeps up its good work it will soon rival sousa saturday the lehigh year lings clashed with the rutgers frosh and successfully carried off a victory with a score of 13-6 this was the second fray on the yearling's schedule and did much to offset the defeat at the hands of wyoming seminary two weeks ago at the opening of the first quarter lehigh kicked off and the ball was returned to the rut gers 35-yard line where rutgers succeeded in making three suc cessive first downs lehigh then held their opponents for downs and successfully carried the ball to the rutgers 20-yard line and then with a series of off tackle plays had it placed on the one-yard line when the quarter ended on the first play in the sec ond quarter the ball was rushed over the line for the first touch down credited to the lehigh frosh this year lehigh then kicked off to rut gers who made their downs and brought the ball to the brown and white two-yard line the frosh held rutgers for downs and drove them back fif teen yards the rutgers year lings then completed a pass for a touchdown tieing the score 6-6 the second half opened with rutgers kicking off to lehigh the first period of the second half was uneventful rutgers playing a defensive game througout the final quarter netted the lehigh yearlings a second touch down a repetition of that one made by rutgers earlier in the game the extra point was made by a field goal and put lehigh on the long end of a 13-6 score rutgers played a good defen sive game but their offense was not so effective both teams compared favorably as to weight and it may be well said that le high had the edge throughout the entire game the frosh are being whipped into shape by coach cusick and it is assured that the remaining five games on schedule will be hotly contested the lehigh university soccer team defeated the new ork university booters last satur day afternoon by the score of five goals to three in a very hotly contested game played at van gortland park new york city at the end of the game the score was tied each team having scor ed three goals and therelore it was necessary to play two extra five minute periods in order to decide who was the winner new york university started the game with a rush scoring a goal in the first few minutes of play two more goals were add ed to their score before the le high players had time to collect their wits later in the period however the brown and white players retaliated and came back at their opponents by scor ing two goals in rapid succes sion in the second half despite the sterling defense of the violet backs lehigta made nother_goa tying the score and making it necessary to play an extra five minute period but this was not sufficient time in which to break the deadlock and finally in a sec ond extra period lehigh broke through their opponents defense and the two winning goals were scored fernandez did most of the scoring for the brown and the students showed much improvement in their game over that of last sat urday against princeton the army got an early lead scoring their lone tally fifteen minutes after the start of the game bayer aid association this year are succeeding in their attempts to organize to a great extent and their cooperative system of sales with the different bethle hem merchants should be of dis tinct advantage to the self aid it cannot however be truly said that this is so inasmuch as for some reason the stftdent body generally seems to be a victim of procrastination or the indi vidual student has a tendency to refuse to lend any support at all to the cause those students who have given no thought to the matter would do well to in vestigate this cooperative system and realize on the discounts of fered it might be well to list the members of the self aid repre sentatives together with the merchants cooperating for the success of the organization continued on page 2 col 5 the lehigh cross-country team was victorious in the first run of the season when the dickinson harriers were defeat ed by the close score of 26 to 29 the race was run saturday af ternoon just preceding the foot dan game between the same in stitutions over what is known as the woodland farm course the runners left the main en trance of the gymnasium shortly before two o'clock and finished at the western edge of the low er field during the first part of the race the men were fairly well bunched but after the long grind up the mountain behind st luke's hospital the ultimate leaders forged to the front at the halfway mark the runners were virtually in the same posi tion as they finished with the ex ception of clauss of dickinson he was runing fourth at this stage of the race but both raine and barba of the brown and white passed him before the fin ish line was crossed almost immediately after the firing of the gun bayley the outstanding performer for the red and white took the lead and was never headed during the remainder of the race sieg mund of lehigh stuck close to his heels for a good part of the race but the exceptional stamina of the winner enabled him to gradually increase the distance between him and the brown and white harrier and he crossed the finish line almost a minute ahead of the latter bayley's time for the race was 29 min utes and 48 1-5 seconds which is the fastest time which has been turned in for this course and will stand as a record for some time at least in addition to the excellent performance of siegmund the first brown and white runner to finish raine and barba ran con sistent and well-timed races when the top of the reservoir hill was reached both morgan and clauss of dickinson had » slight lead over these lehigh hall and dale men but before they returned to the campus clauss had been conquered and morgan had but a few yards ad vantage as soon as raine rounded the curve at the psi upsilon house he set out to ov ertake the diminuitive runner from carlisle as they approach ed the stadium raine had closed up the gap all but about two yards and they raced in the gate neck and neck but the lehigh runner slipped on the rise inside the gate and this enabled the vis iting harrier to cross the line less than a fifth of a second in the lead the other runners fin ished with several yards be tween each succeeding one captain porter of aid association this year are succeeding in their attempts to organize to a great extent and their cooperative system of sales with the different bethle hem merchants should be of dis tinct advantage to the self aid it cannot however be truly said that this is so inasmuch as for some reason the stftdent body generally seems to be a victim of procrastination or the indi vidual student has a tendency to refuse to lend any support at all to the cause those students who have given no thought to the matter would do well to in vestigate this cooperative system and realize on the discounts of fered it might be well to list the members of the self aid repre sentatives together with the merchants cooperating for the success of the organization continued on page 2 col 5 the lehigh cross-country team was victorious in the first run of the season when the dickinson harriers were defeat ed by the close score of 26 to 29 the race was run saturday af ternoon just preceding the foot dan game between the same in stitutions over what is known as the woodland farm course the runners left the main en trance of the gymnasium shortly before two o'clock and finished at the western edge of the low er field during the first part of the race the men were fairly well bunched but after the long grind up the mountain behind st luke's hospital the ultimate leaders forged to the front at the halfway mark the runners were virtually in the same posi tion as they finished with the ex ception of clauss of dickinson he was runing fourth at this stage of the race but both raine and barba of the brown and white passed him before the fin ish line was crossed almost immediately after the firing of the gun bayley the outstanding performer for the red and white took the lead and was never headed during the remainder of the race sieg mund of lehigh stuck close to his heels for a good part of the race but the exceptional stamina of the winner enabled him to gradually increase the distance between him and the brown and white harrier and he crossed the finish line almost a minute ahead of the latter bayley's time for the race was 29 min utes and 48 1-5 seconds which is the fastest time which has been turned in for this course and will stand as a record for some time at least in addition to the excellent performance of siegmund the first brown and white runner to finish raine and barba ran con sistent and well-timed races when the top of the reservoir hill was reached both morgan and clauss of dickinson had » slight lead over these lehigh hall and dale men but before they returned to the campus clauss had been conquered and morgan had but a few yards ad vantage as soon as raine rounded the curve at the psi upsilon house he set out to ov ertake the diminuitive runner from carlisle as they approach ed the stadium raine had closed up the gap all but about two yards and they raced in the gate neck and neck but the lehigh runner slipped on the rise inside the gate and this enabled the vis iting harrier to cross the line less than a fifth of a second in the lead the other runners fin ished with several yards be tween each succeeding one captain porter of
