looses the efforts of a staunch and true friend the meeting was adjourned after which there followed a hearty college yell and a che-he-che-ha for professor doolittle both the faculty and the instruc tors were well represented at the meeting the watch is an open faced full jeweled swiss timepiece with plain gold back and the fol lowing inscription on the cap " presented to charles l doolittle c e by the undergraduates of lehigh university june 13 1895 it was bought with the guarantee that it would not vary 15 seconds in a month baseball lehigh 7 pennsylvania 16 lehigh met with her second de feat at the hands of pennsylvania yesterday on franklin field by the above score the day was a poor one for base ball the game being twice inter rupted by showers the slippery condition of the ground and ball affected the fielding which was bad on both sides nevins pitched well up to the seventh inning when he weakened and was hit freely the feature of the game was the heavy batting of shoenhut and lukens pennsylvania went first to the bat shoenhut struck out and was quickly followed by avil grey was given two balls and one strike when the game was stopped by the rain which fell in torrents in about ten minutes grey again stepped up to the plate and hit an easy chance to petrikin,who threw over senior's head and grey went to third goeckle was given his base on balls and stole second goss threw to catch him but the ball hit his foot preventing a put out grey scored on the throw reuning hit to senior and was re tired leaving goeckle on tlv'rd for lehigh goss was retired on strikes lukens hit a liner past second and made second on petri kin's sacrifice shoenhut to goeckle bowie hit a fly to left field but avil caught the ball after a ' quick run and lehigh's hopes were shattered in the second inning blakely hit a grounder to bowie who duplicated petrikin's error in the first by throwing wild and another run was scored gorman struck out tracy was hit by a pitched ball and went to first reaching second on goss wild throw to catch him dickson struck out but shoenhut lined out a home run over gannon's head scoring tracy also lehigh's half of this inning was unprofitable only three men going to the bat pennsylvania earned one more in the third on grey's two-bagger to left goeckle's sacrifice and reu ning's single to centre the latter was caught trying to steal second and blakely struck out whitmoyer opened the third by striking out and nevins followed his example goss hit to tracy who failed to hold the ball and goss was safe on first he was advanced to second by lukens single to right scoring on tracy's wild throw lukens reached first on avil's error but petrikin struck out ending the inning only two men reached first base in the fourth inning gannon and dickson both on singles to left field gannon was left on the base while dickson in trying to stretch his hit into a two-bagger was caught at second by goss quick throw to petrikin the fifth in ning was alike unproductive tor both teams no one getting to first in the sixth goeckle hit safely to thompson stole second and went to third on senior's fumble of gor man's easy grounder tracy however struck out and retired the side lehigh's second run was earned in this inning on petrikin's pretty single to right field and bowie's home run hit to the centre field fence the latter was declared out however for not touching second in his course around the bases pennsylvania scored two more earned runs in the seventh on dickson's single to right and shoen hut's second home run over centre field fence lehigh could only tally one in this inning thompson hit a single past short stole second base and came home on nevins double to right pennsylvania developed a bat ting streak in the eighth and aided by errors and misplays scored five runs four of which were earned blakely singled to centre reached second on gannon's throw to petrikin and third on gorman's sacrifice thompson to senior then tracy hit to petrikin who threw poorly to goss allowing blakely to score tracy reaching first on the play dickson hit a pod fly to petrikin making the second out shoenhut immediately followed with a three-base hit to left in lehigh's half of this inning lukens made his third hit a hot grounder past short petrikin's second sacrifice a slow bunt to shoenhut put lukens on second bowie followed with a single to right field which scored lukens reached second on a passed ball but was called out at third senior hit to shoenhut and was thrown out at first preventing further scoring reuning and blakely were pre sented with four balls each at the beginning of the last inning both scoring on the singles of gorman and tracy which followed in quick succession the latter two runners were brought home by dickson who hit a hot liner between first and second shoenhut hit a beauty to bowie who quickly threw dickson out at second and petrikin completed the double play by throwing shoenhut out at first no further scoring was done avil and grey being left on bases by goeckle's out thompson to senior lehigh scored three more runs in her half of the ninth two be ing earned gannon and thomp son each made a single cleary reached first on the throw which caught thompson at second nev ins and goss lined out two-baggers to left field and lukens followed with a single petrikin and bowie were put out on flies and the game was over no football game will be played with cornell this season testimonial to pro fessor doolittle a meeting of the undergraduates was called on thursday at 12.30 o'clock for the purpose of present ing to professor doolittle a token of their high esteem and unbound ed respect a few months ago the student body of lehigh learned that pro fessor doolittle had accepted a very flattering offer from the uni versity of pennsylvania there was a general feeling of regret throughout the college the students as a whole felt that they were to lose one whose place could not be filled and each student wanted an opportunity to express his regard hence it was unanimously decid ed to appoint a committee to con sider a plan by which the college might manifest iit respect and regret after the meeting today was called to order a report from the committee was asked m.s cooke 95 chairman of the committee re sponded in behalf of the college he expressed great thanks to pro fessor doolittle for the inestimable services which he has rendered to lehigh the remembrance an open-faced watch was presented to the pro fessor amidst great applause professor doolittle then ex pressed his hearty thanks and appreciation to the student body he spoke pleasantly of the relations in which he had been thrown with the students and said that he would like to have had even a greater acquaintance he said that stu dent and instructor should co-oper ate as men of equals the faculty the trustees and all who are interested in lehigh's interests feel that in the leaving lehigh
