the officers elected by the chess club are badgley president w b taylor vice-president and mer riman secretary and treasurer baccalaureate ser mon an almost perfect morning neither too hot nor too cool prob ably accounted partly for the large number present at the chapel yes terday every seat was filled and a great many were standing at the rear and sides the music was exceptionally fine and the sermon itself unusually interesting having the additional virtue of being short — quite a contrast to the usual baccalaureate the lessons were read by the acting chaplain dr caskey and the sermon was preached by bishop nelson of georgia at one time rector of'the church of the nativity he began his remarks by impress ing upon the congregation the great seriousness of the occasion and his own emotions at appearing here particularly when he recalled the fact that he had been ■invited by one now gone forever — dr coppee lie then drew an analogy between his own case and that of the case of the class of 95 ; at the time they matriculated he himself had just entered ( upon his new sphere of action and undoubtedly they might derive a great deal of benefit from a comparison of their experiences during those four years the text was . announced from the 11th 12th and 13th verses of the ivth chapter of the epistle to the ephesians he then spoke as suggested by this text of the great importance of unity in church work and how the real work of the christian church was undoubtedly foiled by the present lack of unity therein it is a personal responsibility to all of us to do what we can to restore and preserve this same unity and in doing this the highest aim of every man should be to imitate the perfect character of christ it is not necessary to speak of the importance of preserving one's physical body but the equally important training of the spiritual body — how often is that overlooked in the catalogue of great interests ! the iniportauce of this training however should be apparent to every lehigh student for the uni versity was built with the idea of cultivating this very element of character and all the religious ex ercises held here have been with the object of cultivating and de veloping this same faculty no man can tell what trustees will do ; the difference is between a legal right and a moral obligation ; but the noble founder of'the university had firmly intended that religious exercises for the whole student body should be held daily and it is this obligation that should out weigh any legal right whatever and in which the young men of the college have as great a responsi bility as the trustees themselves in what manner are these obli supporting two figures the effigies of olney and wood after a short speech by the lord high muck-a muck samuel jackson randall the torch was applied to the pyre which well soaked with oil rap idly caught fire as its lurid light spread out illuminating the sur roundings the scene presented was a weird and fantastic one the figures then being rapidly sur rounded by flames appeared almost lifelike in the foreground were the sophomores dancing about the fire with shout and song while beyond this was the densely packed crowd of spectators in front of the labora tory and extending on beyond as far as the east end of the chemical laboratory after olney and wood were completely consumed which did not take long the band struck up and led the procession . exactly the same as the obligations of so ciety or politics the great evid ence of the resurrection of christ prevails to this day and this effect comes from no other source a great author said god is a neces sity to the life of a man in this world as well as in that of the next and anyone can see that christ's nations hold in their grasp the fate of the world this is not due to any inherent strength in the saxon blood but to their strong and unwavering devotion to the church of christ the bishop here finished the regular sermon and facing the seniors addressed them as follows : " gentlemen of the class of 95 and brethren i admonish you today that what has been said applies particularly to you and as you leave here take with you these sentences : first there must be in you a recognition of a great re sponsibility from which no man can relieve you you have here received benefits which put this upon you but though at some time you are responsible re member it is enough if you have done all you can for ' angels could no more that force that enables you to do this is in you ; and this force you must utilize lastly have courage if you fear you will fall but if you go forth full of hope and trust you will receive not a crown of laurel but one that endureth and passeth not away for ever make your model the son of god strive with heart and soul towards that ideal and the attainment of a per fect manhood is surely yours a representative of the epitome board will be found at jim's room every day until thursday all who wish to purchase epitomes please call there or at the manager's room 103 west fourth street south bethlehem college meeting a college meeting was held in christmas hall on saturday after noon at 2 p m for the purpose of considering the honor system par ticular stress was laid upon the best method of conducting trials after much discussion on this and other doints a resolution was passed asking the students court to allow a man an open trial if he so desires a motion to censure the court for its finding in a recent case was lost there being no further business the meeting adjourned oratorical contest the oratorical contest for the recently offered drexel-dolan wanamaker prizes will be held in the chapel on tuesday morning at 10.30 o'clock the contestants are as follows : stocker 95 blehl 95 daboll 96 herr 96 ean dall 97 and hood 97
