professor doolittle who is about to sever his official connection with the university was next called upon and responded in a few well chosen words happy and appropriate remarks were also made by professor merriman but ler 70 and rock 69 the ut most enthusiasm was manifested throughout and the speakers were all cheered and recheered to the echo following this came the inspec of the different departments in order to give the older alumni an opportunity to see what the univ ersity is now doing as compared with former periods the regular alumni meeting was called to order shortly after 3 p m in the lecture room of the chemical laboratory roll call and minutes were dispensed with and the first report heard was that of the athletic committee as printed in the last issue of the bkown and white the report was unanimously accepted and commended reports from the treasurer the auditing committee and the auditing committee of the athletic committee were also ac cepted a resolution was unani mously passed congratulating the undergraduates on the adoption of a system of honor in their col lege work another resolution was passed commending the trus tees in their choice of president and promising the latter the hearty support and cooperation of the alumni the election of officers resulted as follows : president dr h b reed 70 ; 90v dech 93 johnston 89 third prize 10 french percy laurence reed of new bedford mass fourth prize 10 german har old john horn of south bethle hem fifth prize 15 free hand draw ing h c paddock of east berlin conn sixth prize 10 chemistry henry theodore borhek of beth lehem seventh prize 10 rhetoric l c starkey of bustleton eighth prize essay william gratz carmel n j the fisher prizes for the best electrical instruments were awarded to w s jackson of duncannon and john e weideman of wash ington d 0 honorary mention was made of f l cooke of hack ettstown n j c w bauder of kheims ist v j brown given of carlisle and b e loomis of wilkes-barre the presentation of diplomas and conferring of degrees by acting president chandler then took place he then presented the new presi dent dr thomas m drown to bishop eulison who installed him into the office and introduced him to the assemblage he stepped forward amid applause and said " in accepting this trust i recognize the great honor and responsibility lehigh university has carried out the design of its founder and has entered the front ranks of institu tions of learning in this country through the efforts of its scholarly faculty the good name and high mission of lehigh university will be my first thought 1 hope for the sympathy and co-operation of the faculty and i invoke divine faith in my work bishop rulison pronounced the benediction and the commence ment exercises of 1895 were at an end fraternity and club baseball league the league that was started by the committee on sports this spring came to a successful conclusion last tuesday when the phi gamma delta fraternity won the championship they accomplished the difficult feat of winning two games in the same morning their victim being the hefty club and the sigma pjii fraternity in the first game they had a comfortable lead from the begin ning and won easily by the score of 9-3 in their second game they made four runs in the first inning which won the game for them as the rest was closely contested the final score being 6-1 both games were five inning contests notices in reference to advertising for next year the bkowit and white will make this induce ment to its subscribers for all advertisements obtained for the brown aud white bjr subscribers outside of new york philadelphia allentown and the bethlehems 15 per cent will be given to the ones obtaining them all students graduates or alum ni who may want to get art epitome during the summer can do so by sending to the asst business manager r e laramy broad street bethlehem pa there are still quite a number of books on hand and those who have ordered them and not as yet taken them are urged to get them as soon as possible j b given business manager university day lehigh graduated the largest class in her history wednesday when degrees were conferred on one hundred and twelve men the exercises were held in the chapel and were attended by an audience that completely filled the edifice the usual arrangement in the seating of the trustees faculty and graduates was observed the musical portion of the exercises was very fine a pleasant innovation being the singing by master george w salkeld of easton after the reading of scripture and prayer by dr caskey hymn 433 was sung and acting presi dent chandler announced that walter ferris of wilmington del had been awarded first honor in the class and would deliver the valedictory oration and that warren byron keim of reading had been awarded second honor and would deliver the salutatory the other orators and their sub jects were : fayette avery mc kenzie of montrose the college man in politics john eugene stocker of bethlehem unsung heroes ; william allen lambert of hellertown social evolution elmer august jacoby of locust valley the marriage of venice and the sea all the orations were well prepared some having especial merit and all were well delivered the valedictory oration was de livered by walter ferris he likened his class in attendance at the university and its training at the hands of the faculty to a piece of iron ore worked up from its crude state into an ocean steamship ready to sail from port bethlehem to the moravians when they founded it was a haven of rest after a long and tempestuous voyage ; to him and his classmates it has been a harbor for fitting them out for voyages over unknown seas now they are equipped and ready with full steam and sail with sealed or ders for a voyage should the seas be rough if the ship's design be good they will eventually reach a pleasant harbor before going on their voyage though the class through the speaker bade the bethlehems a farewell until we meet again the speaker then thanked the trustees and faculty and took a farewell of his class acting president chandler an nounced that the wilbur scholar ship a prize of 200 for the mem ber of the sophomore class having the best record had been awarded to walter everett brown of stan ton ya • the other wilbur prizes for ex cellency in the freshmen class were awarded as follows : first prize 15 mathematics — harry c.zimmerman of state line second prize 10 english wil liam adam dehm of new britain conn alumni day never before in lehigh's history have so many of her sons returned to sing her praises to renew un dergraduate days and to show un swerving loyalty to their alma mater the presence of a large number of alumni is a fact which augurs well for the future welfare of the college and the enthusiasm displayed on every hand cannot fail to give an impression which will have its lasting results the day's exercises were opened in the gymnasium by the serving of a lunch which lasted from 12 until ip m following this president howe of the alumni association rapped for order and introduced dr chandler acting president of the university who spoke of the trustees dwelling on the very efficient manner in which they had served the university the next speaker dr drown was received with uproarious ap plause which conclusively proved that the entire alumni body was in hearty accord with the choice of the trustees dr drown said that lie was glad his first public greeting should come from the alumni and thanked them for their loyalty he said that his inten tion was to follow along the lines already well laid and that he hoped the alumni would ever be ready to assist him with advice and counsel so that all might work to gether for the best interests of the university
