the most original specialty was mr hallock's solos on the ' ylotti plioiui i—(at1 — at least that is as near as his instrument can be named * x * * evolving sounds like the popping of champagne corks which he skilfully moulded into melody this was a decided nov elty and he was encored repeatedly until he became tongue-tied a very pleasant part of the washington visit was the reception tendered the organizations by the i niversity club this was given in their spacious club house and the festivities lasted until the small hours of the morning the majority of the men left for elkton md sunday noon while others stayed over with friends in washington reaching elkton,mon day afternoon a most delightful time was spent here wilson 88 were most agreeably entertained by friends of hall 94 who treated them to a very acceptable repast at the " merry band camping club's headquarters omitting the details of a some single copies of the brown and white may be obtained at office of the south bethlehem star south bethlehem pa january 16 1894 vol i and haines 95 aiding the young ladies of the place in providing a tea in the afternoon and a dance in the evening the large audience present at the opera house was also due in a great measure to the exertions of these gentlemen chester was reached the next afternoon in the customary disa to their various residences and the first holiday tour of the lehigh musical organizations had become a thing of the past greeable weather the house was well filled the pennsylvania mili tary college boys attending en masse and astonishing all by their clear and lusty cheer which was given with a snap and precision far ahead of much larger and older colleges here the boys were ten dered another reception the alpha and omega boat clubs entertaining them royally at their winter quarters the next morning every one took the early train for phila delphia where after about an hours delay the p & r was boarded for south bethlehem here tired out with the long strain but happy and jubilant over the success of the trip the clubs arrived about noon on wednesday expressing their satisfaction in a few rousing yells they scattered the holiday tour of the musical organ izations on wednesday january 10th the lehigh university musical organizations returned from the longest and most successful trip in their history throughout the entire tour the clubs were greeted by large and enthusiastic audiences and almost invariably were pleas antly entertained at clubs or private residences by friends or alumni of the university teas dances and receptions alternated in pleasing succession and the alumni and undergraduates in the different towns did their utmost to make the trip a social as well as a finan cial success and this success was the more remarkable on account of going over the same ground but recently traversed by the clubs of princeton harvard and the uni versity of pennsylvania the uni versal verdict seemed to be that the work of the organizations was unsurpassed by any of their prede cessors — press and people uniting in words of warmest commendation the program was essentially the same as that of the bethlehem cc-a cert la czarina being substituted for the " nellona waltzes and the glee club's repertoire strengthened by a number of new and catchy songs the clubs assembled at the bol ton house harrisburg jgbktuesday jan 2 receiving a warteflpwelcome from the numerous undergraduates and friends resident there the evening and most of the next day were spent in rehearsing and visit ing the points of interest about the state capital the concert was given on the evening of the third in the grand opera house to the largest audience of the trip every number was greeted with at least one encore and as usual messrs pettinos quigley and hallock were called out again and again after the concert some of the members of the clubs were entertained by quigley 95 ; others at a dance given by miss robinson the special car left thursday morning for york where the clubs arrived just in time for a late din ner at the national hotel in spite of the proverbial lehigh glee and banjo club weather a large and enthusiastic audience was assembled in the grand opera house by the time the concert be gan a special feature of this concert was mr gibson's pleasing rendition of daisy bell which earned a well-merited encore at this place a number of the men lehigh university club of chicago on saturday evening jan 6 the lehigh university club of chicago held its third annual banquet and re union at the hotel richelieu at 8 p m the club enjoyed itself as lehigh men are wont to do when they get together the elegant supper received full justice then the usual informal toasts were well handled by able speakers after toast-making officers were elected for the ensuing year as follows president g l pressing ex 73 vice president 11 f j porter 78 secretary t c rafferty ex 91 ; j p rafferty ex 91 many others who were unable to come sent letters which were read for the delectation of the company ■■''* the mailing list for this issue has been compiled from the list of students as registered in the presi dent's office those desiring their names to remain upon the list and whose addresses are now incorrect will oblige the business manager by making the necessary correction greeting in response to a general feeling that has existed for some time that lehigh could support — and really should haye — a publication appear ing at least twice a week if not daily the brown and white in its initial number now greets you it will continue to make its ap pearance every tuesday and friday throughout the college year it will aim to put in the hands of its readers promptly all lehigh news together with facts of general interest with regard to other col leges special attention will be paid to accounts of all gatherings of alumni and it is to be hoped that this will bring the alumni and undergraduates into a much closer union so far as possible a full list of notices in the nature of a calendar will be published and all college organizations are invited to make use of this privilege all alumni and friends as well as all under graduates are invited to the use of these columns for correspondence and the publication of such matter as may be desirable the board of editors will consist as at present of six seniors five juniors and four sophomores the present board has been selected with a view to making it as widely representative as possible consistent with necessary ability of the indi vidual the method of selection of future members will be published in full in a subsequent issue but it may be said here that such selection will be made in an impartial man ner and will be based upon the ability of the man as shown by his contributions of news and other matter for publication the price of the brown and white as printed in another col umn is fixed at two dollars per year for this term or from now until the closing of college in june a special subscription rate has been fixed at one dollar and twenty-five cents copies of this and the next issue will be sent to each man in college after that copies will be sent regu larly only to those who have sub scribed subscriptions may be handed to the business manager or to any of the editors at any time after this introduction and state ment of their plans the editors simply make their bow hoping that their efforts may win many new friends for lehigh and — the brown and white what monotonous ride the party arrived at the " carrollton balti more for another late dinner about four o'clock friday afternoon here they were again warmly wel comed by the undergraduates and alumni of the place who had gath ered in a body at the hotel among these were noticed the familiar faces of murray 95 ; the train won easily and arrived in y/ashington several hours ahead arrived at the " ebbitt everybody turned out to explore the capitol the monu ment the treasury the white house and various other national institutions were visited under the competent ciceronage of randall 96 mussey 96 lannon 95 callaghan 95 ;
