pennsylvania is raising 150,000 to erect a y m c a building the new electric railway to the college man who is inter ested in the possibilities and future of the electric railroad a trip to allentown and catasauqua over the tracks of the allentown & le high valley traction company will prove a decided treat the present south bethlehem terminal of this road is at brodhead avenue and third street from there it runs over the hills to al lentown and catasauqua the wide heavy cars are evidently made for strength and comfort and as one enters by the side door he is inclined at first to imagine that he is stepping into a private show the seats being of the same pattern as those usually found in theatres nor is he mistaken for from the minute the car starts off his eyes are greeted by changing scenes which at once interest and entertain him at one moment the car is moving slowly but steadily up an inclined plane the grade of which would baffle the strength of the best locomotive in this position one is fain to lean back in his seat and gaze contentedly at the fres coed ceiling above and soothe his feelings with surmises upon the probable result of the current ceas ing or the motor burning out then at last the summit is reached and with a quick lurch forward the car begins the descent the cur rent is switched off and the car flies down the small switchback with a speed that fairly takes one's breath in addition to the hand-brake which is sufficient for all ordinary grades each car is supplied with a heavy wheel-lever brake which the conductor manages when neces sary after the grades the most note worthy peculiarity of the road is the number and assortment of the curves these vary from the com mon circular arc to the much dreaded companulate curve of 01 ney they are not only placed singly at points where change of the brown and white south bethlehem pa january 26 1894 vol i the junior electrical laboratory no 4 calendar friday jan 26 — junior ball sun meeting considerable respect for the energy of the stu dents and the discretion of those in charge of the laboratory notice a series of university extension lectures upon political economy will be given upon suffering poor of the bethlehems the girls are devoting much time zest and zeal to the mastery of the piece and there is no doubt their rendition of it will be successful the object of the entertainment is a worthy one and the girls deserve all encouragement senior class meeting it was decided to petition the faculty to substitute an address by some prominent speaker for the usual university day orations ex cept the salutatory and valedic tory a meeting of the senior class was held in packer hall on tues day morning immediately after dr worcester's lecture on christian evidences president burley oc cupied the chair and stated that the object of the meeting was to elect a class photographer he then read an estimate furnished by mr eggert who has heretofore done the work after some discussion the motion to accept the terms as offered and to make mr eggert official class photographer was car ried then followed a discussion on the cap and gown question no action however being taken on the matter the meeting then ad journed direction is desired but are grouped in most unexpected places and for no apparent reason except to avoid running through an old barn or hencoop to study the science of track laying the civil engineer can do no better than to carefully examine the complex structure of the special curves on this road for the electrical there are also several points which will prove both novel and interesting the first of these is the double trolley wire which runs over the entire length of single track and separ ates at the double-track and turn outs one wire going over each track the trolley-wire is arranged in this manner in order to avoid divided circuits at the turnouts and to minimize the necessity for feeder wires the new railway is the first one in the vicinity to em ploy this method and the experi ment is regarded with considerable interest by local experts one is impressed as he rides along by the evidences about him of the enormous cost at which this road has been constructed and by its solid and steadfast appearance the tracks are heavy t rails spiked firmly to wide sleepers and the whole is deeply imbedded in rock ballast this solid roadbed and well laid track cause the heavy e&rs to run very smoothly and to make the trip a very pleasant one iahpile of the hilly country the time required to go to allentown by the new cars is but thirty-five minutes which taking into con sideration the curves and grades is excellent remarkable as the road is in many respects yet its physical construction does not appeal to us as strongly as its financial advan tages accustomed as we have become to paying an extra fare at each group of houses passed we find our hands involuntarily seeking the money pocket at the approach of the conductor but after a full hour passes and we arrive in catasauqua with having paid but one fare we come to the conclusion that the new road is a decided success the committee upon the junior oratorical contest consisting of professors merriman ringer and hyde has selected the following orations from the thirteen which were handed in bernard palissy the potter arthur s clift ; the mission of the novel walter ferris ; bernard palissy the pot ter warren b keim ; the moral sublime william a lam bert ; hannibal fayette a me kenzie ; the storming of quebec william warr perhaps the most interesting room about college for the stranger to inspect is the junior electrical laboratory situated in the west end of the new physical laboratory building here the greater part of the work consists of making and using the newest and most im proved forms of electrical measur ing instruments that important and delicate instrument the gal vanometer is the one most experi mented upon and the one which is most frequently used after its com pletion many forms of this in strument from the heavy d'arson val type to the delicate thomson's reflecting galvanometer are seen upon all sides in various stages of completion ; while not a few beau tifully finished and accurate instru ments are fastened permanently upon the rigid slate shelves con structed for that purpose but the greatest pleasure is experienced especially by one who is well in formed upon the subject when he enters one of the small adjoining dark-rooms where the work of testing is being carried on here the almost perfect darkness is made the more apparent by the one little ray which reflected upon a white scale from the mirror of the gal vanometer trembles and moves at the slightest indication of an elec trical disturbance indeed so sen sitive are some of these instruments that the writer has seen a wide deflection caused by the infinitesi mal current from a battery formed by the junction of a penny and a dime held together by the damp fingers and this through a large resistance several peculiar instruments which look like miniature trolley railroads stand about also exhibit ing the marks of excellent work manship and careful finish these are what are known as slide wire bridges and are made in a variety of forms to suit the peculiar cir cumstances for which they are to be used some of these have been so accurately put together that they are capable of measuring elec trical resistance within as minute a degree of approximation as the one hundred-thousandth part of a unit it is always essential in a labor atory of this description to have convenient standards of those units which are frequently used ; and prof harding has not only pur chased valuable standards but has provided that equally accurate ones shall be constructed in the labora tory this is work which although tedious while in operation yet is most satisfactory when completed in their neat boxes standards of resistance and electro-motive force stand about like men in their own homes — secure and reliable though all others be lost the january forum contains a discourse on the brutality of foot ball in which articles appear from the presidents of cornell univer sity of michigan and lafayette the north american eeview also has articles on inter-collegiate foot ball
