although it was announced that dancing would begin at 8:30 it was not until an hour later that the patronesses were through receiving and the beautiful dance programmes were filled the music which in cluded many new and pretty selec tions was furnished by an orchestra under the leadership of mr ruhe of allentown among the dancers were many strangers from easton allentown catasauqua and philadelphia while many girls from town participated the patronesses were mrs b w frazier mrs e coppee mitchell mrs a b fichter mrs w b myers mrs j price wetherill mrs geo pomeroy allen mrs e p wilbur jr mrs e t wilhelm mrs r p rathbun mrs g 11 myers the committee consisted of chester t ayers robert e chetwood jr john l poultney robert s taylor and william warr lehigh men at the world's fair it is very gratifying to see the interest taken in the university by her professors alumni and under graduates as shown by the register which was placed with the lehigh exhibit at the world's fair nearly six hundred names appear upon it many being those of men who have made the reputation of their alma mater what it is through the kindness of profes sor merriman who had the exhibit in charge the following notes have been compiled from this registry book : h f j porter 78 was assist ant chief of the department of machinery during the entire period of the fair a r nuncio 81 was connected with the mexican commission k bryan ex-'b7 put up a number of the elevators in the fair buildings ■j f degendorf 85 was at work for the electric launch and navigation company most of the summer j p robertson ex-'b6 was with the chicago telephome company h b c nitze 87 had charge of the installation of the mining exhibit of north carolina p h smith 92 was superin tendent of construction for the standard electrical cable com pany a t brown 92 was with the warner elevator manufacturing company s a rhoads 92 was with the chicago telegraph company e m sawtelle ex-'93 was at work on the installation of the exhibit of the westinghouse elec tric manufacturing company g h frost 93 represented the engineering news in the techni cal press bureau for several months c t ayars 95 was connected with the chicago educational company bosbyshell 96 was connected with the exhibit in machinery hall richmond 96 was with the exhibit of the buffalo scale com pany prominent among those directly interested in the university was hon eckley b coxe who was president of the mechanical section of the engineering congress of the fair ; also r h sayre another of the trustees president lamber ton's signature appears upon the register with those oi professor merriman who read a paper before the educational section of the engineering congress ; m m duncan f p spaulding 80 calendar tuesday jan 30 — rehearsal of banjo club psi upsilon house 6.30 p m thursday feb 1 — university ex tension lecture high school hall south bethlehem 8 p m meeting of epitome board delta upsilon house 7 p m rehearsal of banjo club psi upsilon house 6.30 p m rehearsal of glee club christmas hall 7 p m friday feb 2 — banjo and glee club concert reading assembly dance sun inn ciation meeting christmas hall 6.30 p m bethlehem 9 p m saturday feb 3 — banjo and glee club concert lebanon sunday feb 4 christian asso the junior class ball notice in consideration of leaving wednesday afternoon almost en tirely free from exercises the faculty has ordered that no games in either baseball or lacrosse can be scheduled to be played on the home grounds except on wednes day and saturday afternoons the engineering society the first regular meeting of the engineering society for this term was held in christmas hall last thursday evening president kav anaugh occupied the chair the regular order of business was fol lowed — roll call reading of minutes of previous meeting etc ferriday 94 then read an inter esting sketch on the qualifications of a good engineer by mr charles webster assistant chief engineer of the lehigh valley railroad the letter which has been posted upon the society's bulletin board in packer hall contains many im portant points for young engineers which are all the more valuable coming from an experienced rail road man as showing just what is expected in practical work neufeld 94 next read the report of the standing committee of the electrical engineering department the report consisted of a very well edited resume of all the recent ex periments discoveries inventions and improvements in the field of electricity the report of the standing com mittee of the department of mechan ical engineering was read by trueworthy 94 and consisted of an account of the experiments con ducted by ordnance manufacturers to produce scientifically perfect armor plate he also spoke of many devices recently introduced into foundries to facilitate work and illustratad his remarks by sketches on the blackboard giberga 95 was elected to mem bership on motion it was decided to hold the annual banquet on friday evening february ninth the motion to have no punch at the banquet caused a stormy dis cussion the first ballot taken was declared illegal but the second resulted in the motion being carried by a very close vote the meeting then adjourned football meeting a meeting of the football team was held at the gymnasium yester day at 12 30 o'clock the business before the meeting was the election of a captain for the ensuing year and the nomination of business manager and assistant business manager the results were as follows : trafton 96 was elected captain by a unanimous vote the nomi nations for business manager : baker 95 cooke 95 johnson,'9s for assistant business manager : bartholomew 96 dickerman 96 g womrath,'96 the meeting was then adjourned and the famous 93 team was a thing of the past mr housekeeper for burgess of south bethlehem state college received the mines and mining display of pennsylvania at the world's fair the exhibit is valued at 30,000 and contains collections of minerals mining machinery and mining tools of all kinds the state displays in edu cation agriculture and forestry were also donated to the same institution last night at a meeting of the conferrees elected to make nomina tions for the democratic ticket in the borough of south bethlehem mr harvey s housekeeper was nominated as candidate for the office of burgess the election takes place on february twentieth perhaps no collegian realizes the fact more clearly than does the lehigh man that in order for social events to be successful and well attended they must have a reputa tion and it was due to this as much as to any other reason that the junior class ball was so well attended last friday evening all who went to it knew beforehand that the dance would be a well conducted and pleasant social event and none were disappointed the dining hall of the sun inn was beautifully draped in brown and white while banners flags and pennants of every description were hung about upon the wall and chandeliers mixed with the bunt ing were chains of greens upon which were suspended like huge bunches of holly berries the crim son class banners
