the chest weights on the lower side were removed entirely ; the horizontal and one side ladder were made into one long ladder and placed horizontally under the track on the south side the freshman find it more easy of access than in its former position a row of up right bars was set up and the high parallel bars braced more firmly the innovations are in the shape of barbelles and a vaulting horse which are very acceptable on tuesday last mr smith marked off the floor and finds that seventy eight men can drill at one time with perfect ease ; besides the reg ularity of position adds beauty and symmetry to the movements the five o'clock drills are increasing in interest and attendance james thompson manager of the victorious princeton football team has been engaged to coach union college football team next fall yale trophy room within the past two weeks the committee of graduates who have the yale gymnasium in charge have caused all the old athletic flags and trophies formerly stored in alumni hall to be removed to the new trophy room in the gym nasium this room has been very hand somely fitted up partly by the gymnasium committee and partly by the class of 77 in honor of a member to whom the room is dedi cated a handsome rug has been placed over part of the marble floor in the center of which stands a beautiful oak table around the sides of the room are a number of handsome chairs matching the table just at the entrance to the room an immense stag's head has been hung the room itself is about forty feet by thirty and fin ished in white marble and plaster a handsome memorial lias been placed on one side of the room dedicated to eugene f baker 77 captain and organizer of yale's first victorious football team on the walls are suspended thirty-six silk flags which serve as trophies of yale's victories in rowing and foot ball handsome oak cabinets are ranged around the room which are to hold the baseballs and footballs the annual dinner of the new york alumni club will be held to-night at the arena professor merriman and dr liinger will be present as representatives of the faculty the brown and white south bethlehem pa february 2 1894 vol i calendar friday feb 2 classical club's monthly meeting in dr hyde's office 336 wyandotte street 2 p m banjo and glee club con cert heading second assembly sun inn 9 o'clock saturday feb 3 — re-examination in hygiene at chemical lab oratory 8.80 a m banjo and glee club's con cert in lebanon 8 p m sunday feb 4 — christian asso ciation meeting christmas monday feb 5 — organ recital by prof wolle in the chapel 8 hall 6.30 p m p m tuesday feb 6 — sophomore class meeting christmas hall 12.30 p m wednesday feb 7 — ash-wednes day holiday thursday feb 8 epitome board meeting at delta upsilon house 7 p m an organ recital by prof wolle the students of the university as well as the music-loving people of the bethlehems will be given a rare treat next monday evening feb sth when mr j fred wolle will give one of his recitals in packer memorial church mr wolle has chosen a program which will prove enjoyable to all those present as it is what might in one sense of the word be termed a popular program it will con sist essentially of the same selec tions he played last summer at the world's fair on the great columbian organ this is the first recital mr.wolle has given since june 92 and all the college men should avail them selves of the opportunity to spend an evening with the great masters of the organ there are very few men in lehigh at present who have ever heard mr wolle on the organ as the disconnected strains that emanate therefrom during the services though pleasing and melo dious are not samples of his ability a large number of the students should attend as every lover of music will certainly enjoy the ren dition tickets which are fifty cents are now on sale at klose's book store bethlehem and jacobj/'s drugstore south bethlehem ; none will be sold at the chapel door notice there will be a meeting of the executive committee and chairmen of committees of the christian as sociation on saturday morning at 9.30 at the sigma chi house a meeting of the executive committee of the athletic associa tion was held last night at which it was decided that owing to lack of funds either lacrosse or base ball should be abandoned a col lege meeting will be called next week to vote upon the question suitably painted and inscribed the whole effect of the room with its large open fireplace is very pleasing and adds additional value to the gymnasium — daily prince tonian the architects club last autumn the members in the course of architecture deemed it advisable to form an organization of some kind a meeting was held to consider this project and re sulted in the formation of a society to be known as the architects club its object is to aid in the work already specified in the curri culum and to further supplement this by various kinds of necessary architectural work not provided for in the course organization being completed late in the term but little was effected before christmas ; however this term the club is desirous of accomplishing at least a part of its design the major part of the work will consist of the procuring of negatives from which blue prints can be taken these negatives will embrace anything of a meritor ious nature architecturally speak ing which will be of benefit to the members of the club an effort will be made to secure working drawings fer various classes of buildings and from which the members may obtain many useful and practical hints a part of the regular work will consist in rend ering a sketch in pen and ink monthly membership is open to all students in the department of civil engineering and the club would be glad of any acquisition to its ranks or of contributions in the line of sketches drawings photo graphs negatives or books an informal meeting was held in the g e drawing room on thursday january 25 at 12:30 o'clock the main business was upon the selec tion of a cut for the epitome several drawings from members of the club were submitted and one of these was selected the monthly sketches were reported as being handed in and the next one was announced to be due february 15 the names of two new members were proposed for admittance to the club and were favorably acted upon the president reported that a number of sketches and working drawings had been secured for the use of the club and that negatives from which blue prints are to be taken would shortly be forthcom ing there being no further busi ness of importance the meeting was declared adjourned the football ques tion we subjoin a consensus of opinions recently published on the subject of football thinking it may be of interest to our readers walter camp in an open letter to the century comments on the most important features he raises the point that serious football accidents occur as a rule only to untrained players indulging in a game where training is an absolute essential he states that town and gown rows disorderly conduct gate stealings etc have disappeared since the rise of football further he says that the game on thanksgiving day was originally objected to on the ground that it would not pay but that the date was taken simply because it was a holiday and all undergraduates could attend cas par whitney in harper's weekly has shown by direct inquiry from responsible men that football has been beneficial to discipline at both west point and annapolis and that not a single serious accident has occurred in the united states during the past season to any foot ball player in f iny college to which letters of inquiry were sent presi dent schurman of cornell says that football as now played is dangerous to life and limb brutal in itself revolting to look upon and degrading to the humanity of both participants and beholders he thinks however that the game might be reformed to the proper standard he condemns thanks giving day games in large cities and believes the game should be viewed by students and their friends and not made a show for the general public president angell of michigan says : i re gard football as a valuable athletic game he believes in general that football should only be played on college grounds president warfield of lafayette says that college athletics are an unqualified good but that games in great cities have become the occasion if not the cause of vice brutality is not inherent in the game but de pends on the men who play it the medical director in his opinion should decide what men are physi cally able to play comment on the above is im possible camp knows more about the game than all the others but he is an enthusiast the three college presidents however arrive at their conclusions from the same array of facts presumably it ; s a pity they can't agree especially when two speak so positively improvements in the gym those who have not used the gymnasium this term will notice a number of excellent changes which mr smith has brought about old instruments have been moved to economize space and new appar atus procured no 6
