the second annual convention of the penna inter collegiate oratori cal union was held in a parlor of the hotel allen allentown on saturday last at 12 o'clock the following colleges being represented by two delegates each viz : swarth more franklin and marshall muh lenberg lafayette and lehigh the first business of the meeting was the election of officers to serve for the ensuing year and resulted thus president j c imley of svvarthmore vice-president w.s merrill of lehigh secretary j howell of lafayette treasurer n f.webster of haverford ; exe cutive committee to serve in con nection with the president and sec retary p w delong of franklin the brown and white south bethlehem pa february 27 1894 no 13 vol i calendar wednesday feb 28 — college meeting 12.30 p m ; christ mas hall epitome board meeting 7 p m psi upsilon house thursday march 1 — meeting of electrical engineering society physical laboratory,7.3o p.m friday march 2 — meeting of classical club dr hyde's office 2 p m meeting of chess club christmas hall 7.30 p m saturday march 3 — rehearsal of banjo club 6.30 p m psi upsilon house sunday march 4 — christian as sociation meeting christmas hall 6.30 p m tuition fees 93-'94 official notice the treasurer or his represen tative will be in his office second floor lehigh valley r r building from 9 a m to 1 p m and from 2 p m to 5 p m during the balance of of this month to receive tuition fees for second term 93 94 all fees for this term must be paid on or before febrtary 28th e p wilbur treasurer 94 and gibson 95 are all uncer tain quantities in need of practice the fence vault is in general an uninteresting event because it is simply a case of the tallest man winning if a handicap is given the probabilities are worstall 96 reinecke 95 crawford 95 and gibson 95 in about the order named murray 95 who holds the lehigh record has been put out of the event by a bad ankle in the high jump bowie 95 se nior 97 dick 95 trafton 96 crawford 95 warr 95 and brown 95 are all good for five feet by natural ability pure and simple none of them have any idea of the proper style of jumping but the man who learns it before the meet is good for the record in the standing high jump mason 96 and merriman 97 are both good men in putting the shot roder ick 9i bowie 95 senior 97 buckman 96 gunsolus 97 and keyes 96 are all powerful men good for thirty feet off hand but individually and collectively their style is not good not a man of them uses his body wallace 97 is one of those athletes of great all-round ability and no specialty given sufficient time he could win any event he trained for the broad jump men have started in too recently to get a line on their abilities but the record is a dis grace to the college and the sooner somebody goes for it the better in closing a word or two should be said regarding the mats ; they are not only worn out but decided ly dangerous ; already this fall they have caused several sprained ankles and if they are not replaced before the hard practice of the last few weeks before the meet they certainly will cause some more even a trained athlete cannot avoid accidents when forced to light on mats where the stuffing is all wadded together in humps and marshall ; f c longacre of muhlenberg and d j silliman of state college the constitution adopted the previous year had been very imper fectly drawn up and the committee having in charge its revision next made their report a number of amendments were suggested chiefly among the by-laws the most important change was the dimin ishing of preliminary meetings to be held and thus also the expense of the union ; but one meeting will be held annually and the ex ecutive committee will probably meet at the same time the date of holding the regular contest was changed from the third week in may to the early part of march because it was found that athletics were of chief interest in may while in march there would be practically nothing to interfere this wiil necessitate the holding of the annual conventions in the first week of december at 2 p m a recess was taken and the delegates repaired to one of the dining halls of the hotel where they partook of an excellent dinner ; here notes were compared and the outlook at different colleges discussed when business had been resumed a number of further amendments dealing mostly with the length of orations qualifications of speakers delegates judges etc were adopted last year each college was taxed ten dollars to help defray the costs of the contest and it was deemed advisable for the same plan to be carried out this year also until the union should be placed upon a firm basis after much discussion as to the relative advantages of bethlehem allentown and easton it was decided to hold the next annual contest in the music hall allentown on may 19 allentown is favorably situated for the stu dents of lehigh and lafayette and it is hoped that they will manifest great interest in the matter the delegates present were j c imley and w clothier of swarth more p w delong and f s bickle of franklin and marshall ; f c longacre and d a miller of muhlenberg ;• w o chambers and j ho well of lafayette ; w s merrill and e e laram of lehigh johnson ' 95 taylor 93 and trafton 98 attended the conven tion of the delta tau delta frater nity held in new york city saturday evening dr copp6e will preside at a banquet of the northeastern penn sylvania lehigh university alum ni association to be held at the westminster hotel scranton march 2 communication now that the aftairs of the athle tic association are under discussion a word as to the reason why the freshman class should be repre sented on the auditing committee may be in order in the first place at least one fourth of the me'imn college are freshmen and so large a proportion of the whole number certainly deserves recognition sec ondly they are expected to and do contribute the same amount of money to the association as 1 the members of the other classes and being taxed they should be rep resented then too is not that class generaly likely to contain one man to whom the modest duties of an auditor can safely be entrusted 5 ' for these reasons the suggestion that an auditor be chosen from the freshman class and that he be elec ted some time between thanksgiv ing and the end of the first term seems both fair and judicious reven the easter trip of the baseball team is now fully arranged the team will play a game with george town at washington one with the university of virginia at chariot tesville one with richmond col lege at richmond and two games with the university of north carolina at chapel hill and ra leigh respectively they will leave here on wednesday march twenty-first the coming winter meet back in the eighties when the gymnasium was first built the great event of the winter was the athletic meeting in the gymnasium ; of late years this meet has declined in popularity until last year when it probably reached its lowest ebb this year however with the ad vent of a new physical director there has been a revival of interest and the events of the coming meet promise to be more hotly contested than any the present undergraduates have yet seen below is a sum mary of the events and the most proficient men in each in the swinging rings hilliard 94 ; mas sey 95 and van bentham 95 are most proficient although none of the three have been practicing much this term hilliard and mas sey were in the gym frequently last term practicing their tricks which are mainly cut-offs and others of like nature van bent ham's performance consists mainly of displays of strength should the three compete the two different styles of work would make an in teresting contest koderick 94 has not been out ; mason 96 and barker 96 are men of good natur al ability but are badly in want of practice on the horizontal bar putnam 96 g womrath 96 merrill 94 van bentham 95 and van duyne 97 are the most likely men womrath and merrill contested last year but have not commenced training as yet put nam started training last year but could not contest because of a sprained ankle ; he should win this year if he commences training as soon as the others for he is easily superior to them in point of natural ability van bentham and van duyne are both strong men but are in need of practice in wrestling beeler 96 and baldwin h 3q have an old score to settle in the shape of last year's tie ; shipley 94 is well built for a wrestler and has some science but also lacks prac tice ; barker 96 is the most sci entific of the lot and will come very near to winning in the middie weight boxing we have tarleton 94 trueworthy 94 senior 97 and dutbur 96 with probable chance in about the order named pettit 94 and neilson 95 are two dark horses who may possibly alter things in the last few days of practice on the parallel bars g womrath 96 and taylor 93 gave a very close contest last year and could make a pretty event again if both train megraw 97 and pflueger 97 have natural ability but have not had sufficient time to work up very much ;
