society held its annual initiation last evening the jnnior technicals who have ranked in the first eighth of their class during their entire course were initiated into the sacred mys teries of the golden key after the initiation proper a banquet was held at the wyandotte and the revels were kept up until an early hour this morning the initiates from 95 were h w beach e c brown a s clift walter ferris a b jessup a s kapella j s miller william reinecke jr and j g shero w b keim as wilbur man was taken in last fall the spring sports much satisfaction was expressed at the increased attendance and in terest manifested at the winter sports held recently the contest was a decided im provement upon former years and now it remains to be seen whether mr smith shall be able to arouse a like interest in the spring sports which will take place in may the out-door events are always produc tive of more enthusiasm than the winter meets and as soon as this cold spell is over the men should come out and start training none have as yet been out and therefore it is possible to mention those who contested last year or have shown special ability prominent candidates are pol hemus 95 in the 100 yards dash wheeler 95 in . the one mile run and michener 95 in the half-mile run other excellent men for the dashes are : warner 94 merriman 97 olmstead 97 the hurdle races are usually the most interest ing and for these mr smith ex pects to secure some very good ma terial from the sophomore and freshman classes for this purpose the class drills will consist largely of teaching the starts and jumping the hurdles in the putting of the shot 94 has the most likely men eoderick and newbaker ; in the pole vault 96 should take the lead with kline and worstall while 97 will no doubt have a strong hold on the running high jump through senior and yates schomberg 94 and buggies 96 have done the best work in the broad jump these lists we hope to see swelled as soon as active training commences two seemingly stubborn obstacles now confront us the track if such it may be calledjs in a wretched con dition and there is no part of the field suitable for practice in the jumps and pole vaults to remedy the latter it is proposed to make a pit about fifteen feet square near the grand stand to lay a foundation of heavy stone and have a top of sand or fine gravel which will not be dangerous in case of a fall this can be done without harming the field to any extent and the tracks could be put in condition for run ning by a slight expense the en tire college is greatly interested in the baseball and lacrosse teams but it is certainly harmful to lehigh's reputation that she has done so lit tle in track athletics the executive committee of the athletic associa tion should attend to these matters as soon as possible in the meanwhile let all who are capable even if distrustful of their powers train zealously for the con tests and seek to win not merely the prize for themselves but glory also for the college the southern trip owing to there being no mail out of chapel hill on saturday night we were unable to publish the tabulated scores of the games played on the southern trip the following are the official scores : university of virginia at char lottesville march 22nd university of virginia lehigh richmond college at richmond march 23rd richmond lehigh university of north carolina at chapel hill march 24th carolina no calculus crema tion the calculus committee of the sophomore class held a meeting on wednesday afternoon and dit cussed the advisability of observing the calculus cremation after much discussion it was decided to recom mend to the class that the custo mary celebration be abandoned and some other plan substituted the chief reasons for this conclu sion were the lack of enthusiasm at the cremations of 9 and 95 the slowness of the men in paying class dues and the general belief that a far better time can be se cured by the expenditure of so much money the lack of time destroys the possibility of holding a trial or giving a play many different schemes were suggested and in the mean while members of the faculty and prominent alumni will be consulted as to their views on the subject captain wheelwright of the harvard mott haven team expects to take the men to the training table as soon as college opens after the spring recess chess club the membership of the chess club has increased to the unusually large number of 44 a majority of whom are present at each of the regular meetings a champion ship tournament with 36 interested is now in progress tonight the club is to be enter tained by an exhibition of simul taneous play the club's opponent being a strong local player the faculty and student body are cordi ally invited this is the first of a series of exhibitions which the ex ecutive committee of the club has arranged and with such entertain ments in view chess has a bright future at lehigh if possible a team match will soon be arranged with some other club probably the bethlehem chess club south bethlehem pa march 30 1894 no 21 vol i it might be of interest at this time to note the fact that dr.schell who has done so much for athletics at swarthmore has written to mr smith trying to arrange a meeting between the freshmen of lehigh swarthmore and probably lafay ette there is a probability that the plan will be
