the fourth annual banquet of the lehigh university club of north eastern pennsylvania was held at the wyoming house in scranton on friday march 30th those present were mostly from wilkes barre and scranton the guest of the evening was prof mansfield mem man who met at wilkes barre by a large number of the alumni was escorted to scranton where he was received by the gen eral committee before the banquet a business meeting was held at which vice president h w rowley presided w l raeder the president being absent resolutions of condolence on the death of dr lamberton were passed and the following offi cers elected for the ensuing year h w rowley scranton presi dent ; w h dean wilkes-barre vice president ; arthur long wilkes-barre secretary and treas urer the meeting place for next year was fixed at wilkes-barre the tables covered with flowers were arranged in the form of the symbolic l the menu cards in double leaf were printed in brown and white and tied with the same color mr rowley acted as toast master and prof merriman re sponded to the toast of lehigh he was received upon rising with a tremendous outburst of enthusi asm and in his speech dwelt upon lehigh in general and the work that is now being done here mr wm r butler of mauch chunk responded to the lehigh clubs his speech was full of humor and evoked great enthusiasm other toasts were responded to by prof i a heikes mr 0 c burkhart mr w r pierce mr j y bas sel mr wm griffith and others the meeting and banquet was the largest in the history of the organi zation 27 being present and it was marked by the old time lehigh enthusiasm during the evening every member present subscribed money for the athletic fund a most interesting and significent fea ture was the enthusiasm which marked the mention of the name of hon eckley b coxe for presi dent of the university those present were l o emerich hazle ton ; j y bassel w r pierce j j clark 0 c burk hart h w rowley f e pratt c l mckenzie w m marple walter briggs henry kimmer ling j t reese scranton freshman class meeting the regular monthly meeting of the freshman class was held at 12.30 wednesday after the tran saction of some routine business notice was given of an amendment to the class constitution reducing ttie time which members may be in arrears for dues from six to two months this amendment will be offered and considered at the next regular meeting a letter from the physical di rectors at swarthmore college pro posing aiy athletic meeting of the freshman classes of swarthmore lehigh and lafayette was read and it was voted to place the mat ter in the hands of a committee of three one of whom shall be the the u of pa glee and banjo clubs will give their spring con cert in the academy oi music philadelphia friday april 20 the brown and white south bethlehem pa april 5 1894 vol.l mustard and cheese no 23 athletic representative with instruc tions to consult with the directors of the gymnasium and arrange such a meeting between swarthmore and lehigh and to invite lafayette to participate it was suggested that the sports be held in bethlehem as a central point in case the three classes take part it was decided to appoint a com mittee to look into the matter of choosing a class cane and report to the class notice was given of an amend ment to be offered at the next meeting changing the date of the election of the class president for the coming year calendar thursday april 5 — meeting of engineering society 7.30 p m christmas hall meeting of electrical engi neering society 7.30 p m physical laboratory friday april 6 — meeting of clas sical club dr hyde's study 2 p m glee and banjo clubs con cert 8 p m philadelphia saturday april 7 — mustard and cheese play 8 p m opera house baseball game lehigh vs temperance athletic grounds 3.30 p m sunday april 8 — christian as sociation meeting christmas hall 6.30 p m " wednesday april 11 — baseball with university of vermont on athletic grounds notice all students who are excused from paying tuition fees — seniors and juniors excepted — will send a written notice in an envelope to that effect to the acting president stating the terms of excuse ; either by having applied prior to jan 1 1892 or by the remission of the fee by the president it is desired to certify the record this should be done without delay henry coppee acting president the prospects for a brilliant set ting for the performance of the field of the cloth of gold on next saturday evening are bright in deed the sale of seats which opened yesterday has gone ahead of that of any performance given by lehigh students the towns people evidently intend to make it a society event as they have bought seats as they never bought them before rehearsals will be held both by the cast and the chorus every day this week dress rehearsals will be held in the opera house this evening tomorrow after noon and saturday morning the large number of men engaged in the play about fifty makes a good deal of rehearsing in the opera house a necessity the costumes furnished by van horn the philadelphia costumer have arrived so that full dress work can be begun at once at the rehearsal on saturday the customary picture will be taken by eggert each of the performers will be presented with one of these by the association the programmes for saturday night will be different from those which the mustard and cheese have used for the past nine years they are being printed in phila delphia and will.be souvenirs worth the keeping the ushers are requested to re port at the opera house by 7.15 p m they are messrs bray buel burley devin gibson johnson mcclung and tarleton both bishopthorpe and the mo ravian seminary will attend en masse the former will sit in their usual seats in i and the latter will occupy the last row of chairs in'the orchestra and the first row in the orchestra circle the words of the songs to be sung by the chorus and as solos are all original and are of a nature to admit gags and hits galore convention of repub lican clubs extensive preparations have been made at syracuse university for the third annual convention of the american eepublican college league which will be held there april 6 the first meeting of this league was held with the univer sity of michigan may 16-17 1892 forty-five colleges of the united states being represented by dele gates last year the convention was held in louisville ky the convention tomorrow it is expect ed will far surpass all previous ones for the league has grown rap idly and is now composed of seventy-two college clubs with a total membership of over ten thousand it is beginning to be recognized as a powerful force in national politics and is yearly be coming a more important factor in the eepublican party three hundred delegates from all the leading colleges in the country will be in attendance and an elaborate programme has been arranged for them addresses will be delivered at the afternoon session by hon chauncey m depew gen james s clarkson hon charles emory smith professor george gunton and hon robert p porter at 5 p m a reception will be given to the delegates speakers and guests at the republican club at 7 o'clock hon henry cabot lodge hon jonathan p dolliver and probably governor mckinley will address a mass meeting to be held at the wei ting opera house a banquet will be given at 9.30 in the armory among others hon chauncey m depew senator lodge and hon j sloat fassett will speak jas e brooks 95 will attend the convention as the delegate of the lehigh university eepublican club sophomore class meeting the regular monthly meeting of the sophomore class was held in christmas hall at 12.30 p m yester day with a po$r attendance the principal business was the accep tance of the recommendation from the calculus committee that no cre mation should be held the commit tee was authorized to continue and secure a suitable substitute the report of the supply bureau was also read before the class w c perkins 90 has opened an office for general civil engineer ing work in williamsport pa f e bray 93 is making tests of materials,with estrada and gray inspecting engineers pittsburg pa marion wilcox has an article in harper's bazar for this week en titled the latest works of eich ard harding davis at a meeting of the princeton republican club officers for the en suing year were elected it was decided to send five delegates to the convention of college clubs to be held in syracuse april 6 banquet of alumni of northeastern penn sylvania
