friday morning the section visited the cortlandt street ex change of the metropolitan tele phone and telegraph company too much cannot be said of the hospitable way in which they were treated here the section was di vided into squads of four or five men and each of these was piloted through the entire building by em ployees of the companyand all points were fully explained honeyman 91 who is now superintendent of construction and sage 93 assistant manager of the broad street ex change did all in their power to make the visit both pleasant and profitable ; and the men were pro fuse in their thanks both to them and to the company in the afternoon the party visited the works of the excelsior electric manufacturing company in brook lyn here as before they met with a pleasant reception and were shown in an interesting and accom modating manner the details and working of the excelsior machines and lamps and many other points of electrical interest the station of the edison elec tric lighting company was visited saturday morning and many items of interest learned the section with a few exceptions returned to bethlehem that night much pleased with their trip debating union representatives from the debat ing societies of harvard yale princeton university of pennsyl vania and columbia met in new york last week and formed an or ganization to be known as the intercollegiate debating union the following officers were elected for the ensuing year president carl yrooman of harvard ; vice president w h leete of yale ; recording secretary s knapp jr of columbia ; corresponding secre tary 11 n june of university of pennsylvania ; treasurer mcc sykes of princeton a constitution was adopted and organization per fected the purpose of the union is to increase the interest in college de bates a schedule is to be adopted and it is intended that debates upon some question of the day shall be held monthly among the societies the leading monthly magazines will cooperate with the union and will publish in each issue several articles upon the questions chosen for dis cussion professor merriman has donated a copy of his method of least squares to the spanish american society the book is translated into spanish by valentine baldwin of buenos ayres brazil arctic explorations the audience as much pleased with the highly interesting lecture on arctic explorations given by professor merriman in the lecture room of the physical laboratory this lecture is one of the series ar ranged by the christian association about one hundred years ago the idea of reaching the north pole became very prominent in scien tific circles vessels had reached as far north as latitude 78 even 80 and 82 the hon james barrington in 1818 published in new york a book on the subject the map of the arctic region re produced from that book and com pared with the modern reveals the increase of knowledge in the last seventy-six years on all sides the area of the unknown has been con siderably lessened ; it is now not more than a third or fourth as great as it was it is not strange that the spitzber gen route should have been regard ed as the best spitzbergen is an island washed by the gulf stream and accessible only in the summer season in 1806 seventy miles north of spitzbergen was attained but an ice bank stopped further progress by sea it was then planned to use sledges from that point perry in 1837 landed at spitz bergen whence he expected to ad vance by means of boats with run ners on either side about eighty miles were travelled by water and then their boats were turned into sledges so rough was the surface that after thirty-two days travel the attempt was abandoned because the drifting of the ice to the south was greater than their march to the north de long with the jeannette was sent out by the new york herald in 1859 by the route of bering strait only to be carried westward by the ice and finally to have his ship ■crushed with little accom plished here followed an account of sir john franklin's disasterous attempt of 1815 and of the subsequent re lief expeditions the international agreement of 1881 for scientific research in the frozen regions re sulted in greeley's reaching the highest point so far attained 460 miles from the pole the recent trips of lieutenant peary and his wire received especial attention at the hands of the lecturer at the present time there are five parties making explorations in the north the best route is probably that by greenland according to professor merriman the north pole could be reached within ten years by the expenditure of a few mil lions if used in a systematic man ner for the establishment of sta tions perhaps one hundred miles apart along the proposed route yale has dropped arithmetic from its entrance requirements dr lochman's lecture on friday evening the members of the architectural club and the senior chemists were very agree ably entertained at the home of dr lochman instructor in photog raphy the latter giving anillus trated lecture on the world's fair views of the principal buildings in perspective and detail were shown many of them being excellent a feature of the lecture was the exhibition of views not seen in the regulation collections these represented many beautiful bits of scenery and also much of an artistic nature which could be found in different parts of the grounds views of the midway with its at tendant crowds were placed before the audience bringing forth many expressions of tender recollections several scenes about the lagoons excited well deserved admiration and well they might the pictures being exceedingly natural and beautiful a large number of pic tures were exhibited all of which were taken hj dr lochman as sisted by his son during their visit to the fair the views shown were snap shots which were afterwards brought here developed and placed on slides from these enlarged views were thrown on a screen in the usual manner the doctor seems to have had remarkable success nearly all the pictures being clear and well defined the lecture presented a rare oppor tunity which was fully appreciated by those who had not done a service to the game in general and to lehigh in particular lacrosse is an unappreciated game says mr whitney and adds i think those who haveseen lacrosse played will agree with me that especially for the spectator it has even more charms than our two most popular games football and baseball * * without losing any of my admiration for football i must confess having played them both that for an all-round developer lacrosse is the greatest game played by civilized man a high compliment coming from such an authority on athletics is paid to our last year's team and one all the pleasanter because we so seldom see ourselves praised by outsiders " last year lehigh had the best team in her history and it is doubtful if a better has ever been put forth in the united states and few better in canada after referring at length to our record mr whitney concludes : " i have dwelt somewhat on lehigh here because on her and johns hopkins seem to hang all our hopes of the game's survival after such a statement every one should put forth his greatest efforts towards making our lacrosse team a success this year senior trip ed in new york the electricals are well treat the brown and white at this place they saw lloyd 92 who is employed there as an expert the senior electricals left beth lehem thursday morning at 7.03 o'clock upon arriving at newark they went directly to the works of the western electrical instrument company where they were shown the entire process of the manufac ture of the weston voltmeters and ammeters mr heinrich an old lehigh instructor is employed with the company and described in a very clear manner the making and working of their measuring in struments in the afternoon the section visited the works of the westing house company also in newark and were much interested in seeing the erixire process of manufacture of their dynamos and motors from the cutting of core discs to the fin ishing of the pretty parts of the machines at 4 p m the party left newark and proceeded to the sturtevant house in new york where they spent the night
